[Chapter 450: Stephanie's Reward]
After finishing the serious business, Linton suddenly thought about how incredible and inspiring Donald Trump's journey was -- from bankruptcy to rising again as a billionaire. Plus, the guy was outgoing and enjoyed showcasing himself, which made him a perfect fit for a guest spot on UPN's weekly financial talk show. Linton was confident the ratings would be great.
The financial talk show on UPN, which aired once a week featuring celebrity interviews, had skyrocketed in popularity after Linton's episode set a new high in ratings. After that, they invited other high-profile guests like Jim Clark, Netscape's CEO, John Chambers from Cisco, Yahoo's founder Jerry Yang, and Winnie Gesso, CEO of Skycrest Capital.
These guests were rising stars and key players in the tech and investment worlds. They were legendary figures with strong personal charisma, making each episode fresh and engaging for viewers.
The show's ratings climbed steadily, especially the episode with Winnie Gesso. Thanks to her stunning looks, brilliant investor image, and impressive track record, that episode reached an astonishing 5% viewership. Winnie's popularity exploded, and she gained countless fans, becoming a nationwide investment celebrity.
While spending weekends with her, Linton noticed her fame was just a notch below second-tier Hollywood stars like Charlize Theron.
At this point, the financial talk show's celebrity interviews consistently pulled in around 4% ratings, establishing itself as one of UPN's flagship programs. Once the show gained traction, inviting big names became easier. Some CEOs of public companies even proactively reached out, wanting to appear on the show.
No matter how you looked at it, Linton thought Donald was a perfect interview subject. With that, he sent out an invitation.
...
"Donald, do you know about UPN's weekly financial talk show?" Linton asked.
"Yeah, I love that show. It starts every Sunday at 8:30 p.m. I've been hooked since your episode," Donald replied.
"Want to be a guest on the show?"
"That sounds awesome! I'd love that," Donald said enthusiastically. He was always eager to promote himself through different film and entertainment platforms, so this opportunity was too good to pass up.
"Okay, consider it done. I'll arrange it," Linton said as he picked up the phone to call Chris.
Upon hearing the boss's orders, Chris quickly checked the show's schedule and booked Donald for two weeks out.
...
Donald's ego was as thick as ever though; soon after, he came to Linton with a request. "Linton, given my great image and audience appeal, when you shoot your next movie, can I make a cameo as a rich guy? I won't take any pay and will show up whenever you need."
It seemed that with his financial rebound, his showmanship instincts only grew stronger. But for Linton, it wasn't a bad thing for his films. "Alright, I'll keep you in mind."
---
The episode following Linton's own -- featuring Netscape's Jim Clark -- also hit a solid 4% rating.
After that episode aired and the ratings came in the next day, Stephanie Egger called Linton, excitedly sharing the news that the ratings had surpassed 4%. She even coyly asked when Linton would finally take her out to dinner, keeping a promise they had made.
But during that time, Linton was knee-deep in overhauling Universal Studios, working around the clock with no time to spare. Stephanie understood and the two agreed to wait until Universal's situation stabilized before fulfilling that promise.
Now the overhaul was complete, it was time to deliver on that commitment.
Linton had always believed in rewarding capable, hardworking employees, especially attractive women on his team.
As the show's popularity grew, Stephanie's own fame rose dramatically. She gathered countless fans, and to Linton, she was proving to be a valuable ally.
...
After seeing Donald off, Linton dialed Stephanie's number. "Miss Egger, are you free tonight?"
"Ah, Linton! Boss, whenever you call, I'm available," Stephanie's excited voice came through the phone.
"Good, I'll send you the address soon."
---
At 7 p.m., Linton hosted Stephanie in a private dining room atop the Hilton Hotel.
Stephanie had clearly put effort into her look, wearing a fitted blue evening gown and classic black heels. At 5'9", her tall and slender frame was striking. Her blonde hair flowed in big waves, and with light makeup and bold red lips, she radiated an alluring charm -- not outright stunning, but with an intelligent and sophisticated elegance that had its own unique appeal.
The moment they met, Stephanie didn't even shake Linton's outstretched hand; instead, she gave him a warm, enthusiastic hug.
"Boss, mission accomplished! The show's ratings have stabilized at 4%."
"Nice work -- you exceeded my expectations," Linton said, handing her a brand-new Louis Vuitton bag. "This is an extra reward for you."
"Wow, so beautiful! Boss, with how good you treat me, should I show my gratitude in person?" she teased.
This woman sure had no filter! Linton held back a reply to avoid ruining their dinner vibe and quickly changed the subject.
"That's not necessary. Just keep doing great work to make this the most influential financial talk show nationwide."
Stephanie shot him a mock pout. "Don't worry, I'll keep working hard. It's not just my goal -- it's UPN's goal too."
"Any challenges so far?"
"Not really. Since you appeared on the show and helped bring in guests, all difficulties have melted away."
"That's great..."
"Boss, let's hold off on work talk for now and have a drink."
"Absolutely. Here's to your success."
"Thanks for your support, boss. Cheers to you," Stephanie raised her glass.
She truly knew how to set the mood as a host. They quickly finished one bottle and then opened another.
During their chat, Linton learned about her background.
...
Stephanie was 25 and had graduated Columbia University three years ago with a master's degree in journalism. During undergrad, she double-majored in journalism and economics -- a straight-A student with serious brains.
After graduation, she joined ABC as a field reporter for business segments.
Three months ago, UPN began its financial celebrity interview program and held an open call for hosts. She stood out among hundreds of candidates.
Her talent shone through the show's success, building her reputation alongside the program -- a mutual rise.
...
"Boss, I know a great bar nearby. Shall we continue there?" Stephanie suggested as the second bottle finished.
It was clear she had motives beyond just drinking. But Linton was game; after all, sometimes letting the lady lead wasn't a bad idea.
"No need to go far. There's a good bar in the hotel's executive suite. How about we go there?"
"Perfect. Just right for a candlelit chat."
...
That night, Linton's impression of Stephanie could be summed up in one word -- smooth.
He also sensed her growing popularity wasn't a fluke; she was on par with a mid-level celebrity. If the show kept its momentum, her future looked bright.
Stephanie's assessment of Linton was equally glowing -- he was simply amazing.
Both quietly agreed to meet again soon.
