On this hot and stifling afternoon, the sentry on the wall felt a chill run through his heart.
Not long after, Mayor Aik of the town, accompanied by a few grim-faced leaders, hurried to the edge of the wall.
He snatched the binoculars from the sentry's hands and aimed them at the lifeless convoy outside the town, squinting as he carefully observed for a long time.
The other leaders also craned their necks, trying to see clearly what had happened.
After confirming that the armed personnel on the highway were indeed all dead, the mayor turned towards the bewildered sentry with a face ashen with anger and asked urgently, "Where are the attackers? How many were there? Where did they go?"
The sentries on the wall exchanged puzzled glances, then collectively shook their heads, like drumming on a wooden fish.
"No one, Mayor. Besides the dead soldiers in the convoy, we didn't see anyone else show up. They… they didn't know how they died, just suddenly collapsed."
