Chapter 595: You're In Over Your Head
There had been practically no room for discussion.
The members of the Guard Department who had barged into the agency took one quick look around the living room before immediately dragging away the still dumbfounded Feline boy. They had come fast, and they left just as decisively.
Even the agency's boss, Mr. Lee, who had been smiling moments ago, froze at the sight. By the time he snapped back to reality, Aak had already been hauled away right in front of him.
"W-Wait a second—could someone at least explain what's going on here? What happened?!"
"Don't worry too much. Aak's just been taken to juvenile detention for a couple days. He picked a fight with someone he really shouldn't have, so now he's getting a tiny little lesson in consequences. As for this person here, he's a big shot I know. He said there's something he wants to discuss with you." Waai Fu gave an awkward laugh as she explained.
After all, if you really thought about it, the guest she had brought over was technically the one responsible for getting Aak carted off. In a way, she couldn't completely deny having some responsibility herself.
Fortunately, the Guard Department wasn't actually planning to do anything serious to him, so the consequences shouldn't be too severe.
"You've got business with me?"
Though his head was still full of questions, Mr. Lee frowned and looked toward Steven.
Only now did he really notice the black-haired young man who had barely spoken since entering the room and had mostly just been quietly observing him. Steven gave off the impression of an utterly ordinary person—so ordinary, in fact, that unless he spoke, his presence barely registered at all.
"Yes, Mr. Lee. May I call you that? It's a pleasure to meet you. And regarding the matter of sending your employee off to juvenile detention… I do feel rather sorry about that."
Steven smiled and nodded politely before extending a hand in greeting.
That said, judging by his expression and tone, there wasn't the slightest hint that he actually felt guilty.
"Of course. The agency welcomes every guest. Though I must admit, I'm curious how I should address you?"
Seeing that Steven's attitude seemed fairly friendly, Mr. Lee only became more confused.
He was absolutely certain he had never met this black-haired young man before, nor could he think of any reason he might have offended him. So why had the other party come all the way here just to arrest one of his people?
"Just call me Jesse. As for who I am… you can think of me as a friend of Wei Yenwu's. That little brat of yours could stand to learn some manners, so I helped send him somewhere he can reflect on himself a bit."
Steven casually revealed both his name and identity while pointing in the direction Aak had been taken.
An explanation was necessary. Besides, this incident also gave him a chance to observe what kind of person Mr. Lee really was beneath the surface.
At that moment, Lin Yuhsia quietly sat down beside Steven as well, silently confirming his claim through her actions alone—effectively representing Wei Yenwu's stance on the matter.
Mr. Lee paused for a moment, clearly not expecting Steven to lay everything out so directly.
But very soon, the easygoing, leisurely smile he'd worn when he first returned slowly resurfaced on his face once more.
Now that he knew the boy was someone connected to the official side of Wei Yenwu, Mr. Lee relaxed considerably.
After all, if they truly intended to do something excessive to Aak, there was no way the Guard Department would have shown up so openly. That would have been far too high-profile.
The conclusion was obvious: that brat had offended someone he shouldn't have, and this young man merely intended to teach him a lesson.
For perhaps the first time in years, Mr. Lee's long detective career actually proved useful.
The faint scent of medicine lingering around Steven was enough for him to piece together a rough picture of what had happened.
He'd warned that kid countless times not to harbor such irrational hostility toward doctors, but Aak had never listened. Now that he was being forced to cool his head and learn a painful lesson, maybe it wasn't such a bad thing after all.
Hung was always talking about showing him the beauty of the world, but the cruelty of reality was just as much a part of this land. Nobody could protect him forever while he acted recklessly without consequence.
"I guess it's fine. Though I am curious, Mr. Jesse—what brings someone like you to my humble agency? Did you lose something and wish to hire us to find it? Or perhaps there's something you'd like us to investigate on your behalf?"
Wearing a perfectly professional smile, Mr. Lee waited for the young man's response.
"Actually, yes. That's exactly why I came to see you."
The moment the topic finally shifted toward business, Steven immediately straightened up. He had come here for a reason, and he had long since lost interest in exchanging pleasantries.
"I heard from Mr. Wei that you recently acquired a rather interesting wine cup from a group of smugglers. If possible, would you mind letting me take a look at it? Don't worry, I'm simply… curious about the cup itself."
If his guess was correct, then much like the chess piece he had obtained before, that wine cup likely housed another fragment belonging to Nian's unfortunate elder brother.
"Oh? Your information network is truly impressive, Mr. Jesse. I only just acquired that item, yet news has already reached you. I can only say… your relationship with Mr. Wei must be quite extraordinary."
At the mention of the wine cup, the relaxed expression on Mr. Lee's face immediately faded. His brows furrowed slightly as he inwardly marveled at the terrifying efficiency of Wei Yenwu's intelligence network.
He had gone to great lengths to keep this matter discreet, yet it had still been discovered.
Still, for Steven to openly ask to examine it right away…
That was rather bold.
"Looking at it is certainly possible. However, there's something I should clarify first, Mr. Jesse. Before you arrived, an old friend of mine had already arranged to purchase it from me. I intend to honor that agreement and deliver it to him personally. So if you're interested in the cup, I'm afraid you'll have to discuss it with my friend instead."
Mr. Lee smiled as he calmly explained the situation.
"I see..."
Steven clicked his tongue softly while rubbing his chin.
"Still, the waters surrounding that thing run very deep. Whether it's you… or your friend… I'm not sure either of you can really handle it."
The cryptic remark left Mr. Lee thoroughly puzzled.
