Chapter 471 - Chapter 501-505

Chapter 501: The 99,999 Year Soul Bone, Part 1

Ye Wen, feeling Xu Jiujiu's curious gaze, scratched his cheek awkwardly but started to explain as her mentor.

"You know the situation here in the Douluo Continent, right? Even eighth level soul engineers are rare, and these twelve stationary soul cannon shells came from Mingde Hall, which no one below level seven could even begin to dismantle or analyze. Most of the people who went up earlier weren't even qualified for level six. So, despite how impressive these shells look, they're ultimately just consumables."

"And because they're consumable items, with a power cap only up to Soul Douluo level, they don't hold much practical value. We already have enough combat power at that level here, so this item missed its mark, leaving it a bit… wasteful."

Xu Jiujiu understood instantly. Ye Wen's analysis had clarified everything.

However, she realized her own oversight, considering she was one of the behind the scenes organizers of this auction.

"Sixty five thousand." Xu Jiujiu placed a bid.

Ye Wen saw her action for what it was. At an auction of this caliber, an unsold item would be an embarrassment to the Star Luo royal family.

However, not long after Xu Jiujiu bid, another bidder raised it.

"Sixty five thousand, five hundred."

What? Xu Jiujiu was puzzled. She had only bid to keep the royal family's reputation intact, so who would now compete with her? Was someone trying to make her mentor look bad?

Ye Wen raised an eyebrow, but then he quickly understood, a slight smile appearing on his face.

"No need to bid higher, Jiujiu. Let them have it," he advised.

As the auction's organizer, Xu Jiujiu quickly identified the competing bidder.

"Shrek Academy," she muttered. She quickly realized the logic of Ye Wen's suggestion. As one of the rare forces on the continent with access to eighth level soul engineers, Shrek's bidding made sense.

However, she wondered if Shrek Academy was short on funds, considering they had only gone with the starting price. What Xu Jiujiu didn't know was that her esteemed mentor had recently squeezed a sizeable amount of gold from Shrek Academy, leaving them financially strained.

Without missing a beat, Ye Wen and Xu Jiujiu moved on from the previous topic and continued watching the auction.

To Xu Jiujiu's surprise, the next several items were all soul bones left arm bones, right arm bones, and left leg bones. These early stage items weren't of particularly high quality; the highest was the final leg bone at thirty thousand years, followed by bones at ten thousand and twenty thousand years.

Yet, to Xu Jiujiu's surprise, Ye Wen instructed her to buy them all, even when a slight premium was involved. She understood the soul bones were intended for her fellow disciples, not for Ye Wen himself. Still, she felt honored and thrilled that a Douluo of his caliber would personally buy items for his disciples.

Following the soul bones, two more precious items were presented: an extremely rare metal and an eighth level soul tool.

Ye Wen needed rare metals, after all. While he could have found the metal himself using his knowledge, it would have exposed him in unwanted ways. With the Star Luo Empire's backing, he won the rare metal without hassle.

The eighth level soul tool, however, left Ye Wen mildly bemused. Created by a ninth level soul engineer from Mingde Hall in the Sun Moon Empire, this weapon could indeed reach the power of a Super Douluo at rank 95.

Yet, it had a long recharge time, could only be used once per day, and required a Titled Douluo to activate. It was more gimmick than practical.

In essence, it was an eighth level tool pushing the limits toward ninth level, albeit just barely. It seemed best suited as a trump card for Titled Douluo who had climbed through quick methods like overuse of drugs.

Thus, unlike the earlier cannon shells, this weapon attracted high interest and was ultimately sold for a staggering 7 million gold soul coins.

The auction continued, offering several valuable soul tools and pills essential to high level practitioners, and the atmosphere grew lively with enthusiastic bidding. Notably, the auction did not sell slaves, a reflection of the times.

Ye Wen stifled a yawn.

"Strange… where's that soul bone I intended for XiaoYu´er?" he murmured to himself. He'd anticipated its appearance early in the auction and, now, he hesitated to ask Xu Jiujiu for the item list.

At that moment, the auctioneer's voice suddenly grew more energized, piquing Ye Wen's interest.

"Ladies and gentlemen, our next two items are the main attractions of tonight's event! Don't miss this rare opportunity these items are unique treasures you won't find anywhere else on the continent!"

Ye Wen's attention sharpened. It seemed his long awaited item was finally here.

However…

"What else could be the highlight of this auction?" Ye Wen wondered. "I already took the Snow Empress for XiaoYu´er. What else could there be at the level of a hundred thousand year soul beast?"

His curiosity mounted. On the screen, a new item appeared a soul bone, magnified to show its intricate details.

It was a deep, verdant green, with a glistening, fluid like aura that made it seem almost alive. The soul bone appeared to be a left arm bone, surrounded by a faint, white mist that further emphasized its ethereal quality. Upon closer examination, one could see the tiny crystalline clusters along its verdant surface, as if embedded with delicate gemstones.

Compared to the earlier soul bones, this one outshone them all, radiating an unmistakable and otherworldly energy.

Chapter 502: The 99,999 Year Soul Bone, Part 2

Ye Wen's eyes gleamed, knowing that the main attraction had arrived.

Xu Jiujiu, who had been closely watching Ye Wen, felt a rush of excitement. She knew it was a prime opportunity for the Star Luo royal family to showcase their influence. But before she could act, a voice spoke beside Ye Wen.

"Master, I've been under your guidance for some time now but haven't had the chance to give you a gift. Allow me to bid on this one for you," said Wei Na, flashing a charming smile.

Xu Jiujiu turned to see Wei Na's expression, soft and polite. Because Wei Na was young, Xu Jiujiu had never considered her a rival, but now she regretted overlooking her. Regardless of her age, Wei Na was also royalty and clearly knew how to navigate situations like these.

Ye Wen paused but then nodded, quietly accepting her gesture. "Alright," he said.

He understood that both Wei Na and Xu Jiujiu hoped to use these gestures as a way to build a deeper connection with him, possibly even to align him more closely with their respective empires. Their strategy was to foster goodwill, encouraging him to remain neutral but still fostering some goodwill toward them for future favors.

Wei Na was pleased to have her opportunity. She had thought that being on Star Luo's territory would make her practically invisible to Ye Wen tonight, but this change worked to her advantage. Still, she waited for the auctioneer to finish her introduction before making her move.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I am honored to present to you our next auction item," the auctioneer began. "As many of you know, there is nothing more precious to a soul master than a hundred thousand year old soul ring or a hundred thousand year old soul bone. These items are rarely, if ever, seen in an auction particularly a soul bone of this caliber."

Ye Wen noticed that the auctioneer seemed to be promoting the item almost excessively, essentially discouraging anyone from considering it without careful thought.

"Perhaps some of you are wondering why we're mentioning its shortcomings," the auctioneer continued. "At Starlight Auction House, we pride ourselves on transparency, and this item's unique limitations are part of its rare allure. This ice attributed soul bone has specific restrictions. Only soul masters with an ice attribute may use it; otherwise, attempting to merge with it could be dangerous even fatal."

Ye Wen could tell that this soul bone had likely been specially procured for Xu Jiujiu's auction house to use as a high stakes gift for a talented ice user like Huo Yu´er. It wasn't a mere plot device like those in stories. After all, ice users were primarily found in the Heavenly Soul and Dou Spirit Empires, near the extreme north.

The auctioneer continued detailing other "drawbacks," which Ye Wen viewed as selling points. This soul bone's skill was fixed rather than adaptable, unlike some that could change based on the user's soul skills. Knowing a soul bone's ability beforehand was often advantageous, since soul bones were rare, and not everyone was willing to risk dismemberment to replace them if their abilities were incompatible.

The final "drawback" was purely rhetorical, mentioning a supposed cultivation level limit for absorbing the bone a limitation Ye Wen dismissed as baseless. He suspected this was merely a tactic to dissuade those who couldn't afford it from bidding.

However, one of the Shrek Academy inner court students attending had an ice based martial soul. Although Shrek Academy was financially strained, they wouldn't pass up an opportunity like this for such a prized student.

After a moment of thought, Ye Wen decided to intervene, both to help his disciple save her resources and to further cement a small debt from Shrek.

Xu Jiujiu was privately frustrated at seeing her planned gift for her mentor potentially slipping away, but Ye Wen's voice drifted over to her, steady and calm.

"Jiujiu, go to Shrek's box and deliver this message for me: This soul bone can only be absorbed by someone with an extreme ice attribute. Any other ice based soul master who tries will face dangerous backlash and potentially fatal consequences."

Xu Jiujiu hesitated but quickly got up and left to fulfill his request.

The girls in the booth, all talented soul masters, exchanged glances at this unheard of idea of a soul bone with a potential backlash. Although they were curious, the formal atmosphere prevented them from asking questions. The room fell silent.

Onstage, the auctioneer was continuing her praise of the item, explaining that the bone had come from a sovereign soul beast clan in the extreme north, the Ice Jade Scorpions. The high status of this soul bone excited many of the guests even those who didn't have ice attribute martial souls, as they'd all heard of Huo Yu´er's prowess.

Moments later, Xu Jiujiu returned.

"Master, Shrek received the message and expressed their thanks," she reported. Then, with a hint of apprehension, she spoke to Ye Wen, "Master, I apologize for the insufficient research our auction house conducted on this item. Though it's a mistake on our part, we can't withdraw it now that it's on display. But if you wouldn't mind, could you perhaps explain its particulars on stage?"

Ye Wen paused. He recognized Xu Jiujiu's strategic intent.

Chapter 503: The 99,999 Year Soul Bone, Part 3

Ye Wen rarely made public appearances unless absolutely necessary. Too much interaction with various powers could imply alignment and subtly affect many other matters. However, it seemed that only his own explanation could fully clarify this item's unique nature and risks. Besides, the Star Luo royal family had already spent a considerable amount on his behalf, so it was only right for him to step forward now.

"Alright then," he said finally.

As Ye Wen appeared on stage, the audience instinctively held their breath. Although Ye Wen's appearance was that of a composed, strikingly handsome young man, his reputation as an unmatched force preceded him, and no one dared to underestimate his presence on stage.

"I'm aware that many of you know who I am, so I'll skip the introductions," he began, stepping towards the soul bone and raising it with one hand. "I'll be direct. This soul bone is quite an anomaly among soul bones because it originates from a creature that wields the power of Ultimate Ice, a 65,000 year Ice Jade Scorpion from the Great Northern Ice Plains."

Ye Wen scanned the room. The audience composed entirely of elite figures listened with rapt attention. Ye Wen continued, undeterred.

"Most of you are unfamiliar with this beast because it resides in a region considered forbidden to humans: the eternal winter of the Great Northern Ice Plains. But the real reason few people know about the Ice Jade Scorpion is not just because of its remote habitat but because most soul masters who encounter one do not survive."

He paused, allowing this fact to settle in. Then, he continued, "Unlike most powerful soul beasts, Ice Jade Scorpions are social creatures. Encountering them alone is rare; they travel in groups. Their icy habitat and the nature of Ultimate Ice make them formidable, even for powerful soul masters. Anyone without at least a Soul Douluo's power level should immediately retreat if they see one. They're that strong."

A murmur spread through the room, but Ye Wen's steady voice quickly brought it back to silence.

"Even titled Douluo should avoid confrontation if possible," he added. "You may have heard of the ranking of fierce beasts. Ranked seventh on this list is none other than the leader of the Ice Jade Scorpion clan, the 400,000 year old Ice Jade Emperor Scorpion. To put it simply, this creature the second of the three Great Northern Kings possesses power nearly equal to a 99th level peerless Douluo. For any soul master lacking that power, seeking a fight with it is courting death."

He paused again, scanning the audience. "I know I've said a lot, and it may be hard to believe the dangers of this soul bone. So I'll ask: would any ice attribute soul masters who want to experience Ultimate Ice firsthand please come forward."

Xu JiuJiu glanced around, worried no one would volunteer, putting her master in an awkward position. Yet, within moments, a dozen Soul Douluo had eagerly stepped forward, eyes filled with anticipation. They weren't about to let an opportunity to get close to Ye Wen, a peerless Douluo, slip by.

Ye Wen nodded, looking pleased. Without further delay, he raised the soul bone, letting a trace of its icy essence flow through his hand. "Prepare yourselves. I'm about to activate the essence of Ultimate Ice within this soul bone. This bone came from a 65,000 year Ice Jade Scorpion. Though its power of Ultimate Ice is still immature, it's more than capable of freezing an average titled Douluo."

The Soul Douluos exchanged glances and immediately summoned their defensive techniques. The auction stage lit up in a colorful display as each cloaked themselves in layers of soul energy, reaching their most fortified states.

A chilling aura burst forth from the soul bone. Even those observing from their private rooms felt an instant, biting cold, despite the protective measures around them. Meanwhile, the Soul Douluos on stage found themselves frozen solid in a matter of seconds.

Ultimate Ice its power was terrifying.

Fortunately, Ye Wen had only released a sliver of the soul bone's essence, enough to demonstrate its intensity without causing serious harm. After a few moments, the frozen Soul Douluos broke free, the ice shattering around them, leaving a frosty mist. Although they hadn't suffered frostbite, they couldn't shake off the cold.

Ultimate attributes truly represented the pinnacle of martial soul power on this continent. The Soul Douluos, proud and confident in their abilities, had finally felt the sting of their limitations.

As they recovered, Ye Wen turned to them with a faint smile. "So, how did you find Ultimate Ice?"

One of the participants, a duke of the Star Luo Empire, raised his hand and bowed respectfully. "Thank you for holding back, Lord Douluo. Ultimate Ice's reputation is well deserved."

Typically, the ideal way to showcase the dangers of this soul bone would be to have an ice attribute convict attempt its fusion on the spot, providing an immediate, visible example of its effects. However, everyone knew Ye Wen wanted this bone for his disciple. It was well known that the soul bone's first fusion not only granted the soul skill but also increased a soul master's level; this benefit was only gained once.

Using this soul bone on a disposable test subject would diminish its worth significantly.

In the Shrek Academy booth, Ling Luochen stared, shaken, at the thin layer of frost covering her room. Any interest she had harbored for the soul bone had transformed into dread. Seeing its effects firsthand, she wouldn't dare absorb it, even if handed to her.

Their teacher, Wang Yan, furiously jotted down notes. He initially thought Ye Wen had sent Xu JiuJiu to deter Shrek Academy's interest out of spite, but he now saw it as a genuine warning.

With Ye Wen's demonstration concluded, the auction resumed.

Chapter 504: The 99,999 Year Soul Bone, Part 4

The initial bid for the Ice Jade Scorpion's Left Arm Bone was set at twelve million. Although this seemed high, it was a bargain considering the ten million price tag on a mere ten thousand year Bright Dragon Soul Bone at the Shrek Academy Treasure Fair in the original story.

Yet, for the upper echelon, this was merely numbers. Wei Na raised her hand, calling out a bold fifteen million.

Most attendees held Ye Wen in immense respect and understood that this soul bone was practically reserved for Huo Yu'er. They refrained from bidding out of courtesy except for a few representatives from the Sun and Moon Empire, who, unlike the locals, felt no obligation to respect Ye Wen's position. As an international rival to the Douluo Continent's powers, they had been formally invited to avoid international tensions.

Unlike the Douluo Continent, where soul bones were highly revered, the Sun and Moon Empire considered them rare treasures but primarily as precious materials. Recognizing this Ice Jade Scorpion arm bone as an exceptional specimen, they decided it was worth a bidding war with Wei Na.

The price climbed rapidly, reaching twenty nine million in no time. Ye Wen's brow furrowed he wasn't going to let this escalate indefinitely, wasting time and resources. Although the auction hall was fortified to prevent disruptions, it was still susceptible to certain forces.

Utilizing his spatial abilities, Ye Wen discreetly opened a spatial crack connecting to the Sun and Moon Empire's private box. An overwhelming pressure filled the room as his voice echoed within. "Don't overstep your bounds in another's territory."

The voice, though calm, carried a weight that left no room for argument. Jing Hongchen, feeling an icy sweat trickle down his back, knew better than to push any further. Though it stung his pride, he understood that challenging Ye Wen a peerless Douluo was unwise, especially when Ye Wen could shatter the norms of decorum at will.

In the end, Wei Na secured the soul bone for thirty million.

When the attendant brought the prize into their box, Wei Na beamed as she presented it to Ye Wen like a cherished treasure. He accepted it with a pleased nod, knowing this gesture was meaningful to his young disciple.

Inspecting the bone for a moment, Ye Wen then stored it away, amused that the soul bone's price had coincidentally matched the original story's amount.

However, he was now curious. What could possibly replace the Snow Empress as this auction's final item?

The auctioneer's voice cut through the murmuring crowd, her tone passionate despite a hint of strain from the long evening.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the final item of the night is here!"

Ye Wen now noticed that the auctioneer had changed her outfit from red to gold. Seeing his curiosity, Xu JiuJiu explained, "Teacher, our auction house has a custom. Red attire signifies a total auction value in the tens of millions of gold soul coins. But when the host changes into gold, it means a single item valued at over a hundred million gold soul coins."

Ye Wen raised an eyebrow. A hundred million gold coins? That's enough to buy an entire city. Though he was curious, he couldn't resist asking his disciple. "Xu JiuJiu, what exactly is this final item?"

"It's an engraving blade, Teacher."

Ye Wen was momentarily taken aback. An engraving blade? Even the highest ranked engraving blade shouldn't fetch a price that high.

While he mulled this over, the item was brought onto the stage, and the auctioneer resumed her pitch.

"Ladies and gentlemen, behold our grand finale. Allow me to keep you in suspense just a little longer."

"As you may know, engraving blades are essential tools for every soul engineer. A high quality engraving blade is crucial for achieving the highest ranks. But what you see before you is more than just 'high quality' this is truly a peerless blade."

"In the world of soul engineers, there exists a ranking for engraving blades. The very best belong to top tier soul engineers alone, a list known as the 'Hundred Ranked Engraving Blades.' On our continent, the rankings are well documented, and sadly, more than two thirds of these ranked blades reside in the Sun and Moon Empire. Their possession of these blades is one of the reasons they have so many elite soul engineers. Today, however, you see before you a blade among these ranks. Yes, you're looking at one of the Hundred Ranked Engraving Blades."

A tense silence fell over the hall. In the Sun and Moon Empire box, Jing Hongchen glanced at the blade with a hint of disdain, stifling a yawn. After all, the top ten blades on the ranking list were all held by the Sun and Moon Empire.

Yet something felt strange. Even the highest ranked engraving blade wasn't worth a hundred million. What could Star Luo be thinking? Had they gone mad for profit?

The auctioneer's voice broke through his thoughts.

"Of course, we all know that even the best engraving blade wouldn't normally fetch more than fifty million. But I promise you, this blade is unique. Not only is it irreplaceable as a tool, but it holds value beyond measure."

The audience's curiosity was piqued, and their gazes locked on the unassuming blade on stage.

"To explain its uniqueness, let me start by introducing this blade. It's known as the Soul Devouring Engraving Blade, ranked ninety ninth among the Hundred Blades."

A murmur of recognition rippled through the soul engineers present, who immediately looked troubled.

To outsiders, the name might mean little, but for soul engineers, this blade was infamous. Known as the 'Cursed Blade,' it was said to bring disaster to those who owned it.

Chapter 505: The 99,999 Year Soul Bone, Part 5

The revelation of the Soul Devouring Engraving Blade's notorious name sent murmurs throughout the auction hall. But the crowd quickly quieted, sensing that this final item must hold even greater secrets to warrant its place as the finale.

Sure enough, the auctioneer's voice echoed again, dispelling their curiosity.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please be assured the Soul Devouring Blade no longer bears any of its infamous curses. Somehow, it was recently purified, and it now shines with its true brilliance. Allow me to unveil the unparalleled beauty of this extraordinary treasure."

As she spoke, she removed the protective soul barrier around the Soul Devouring Blade.

Instantly, an aura of pure, vibrant energy spread across the room, causing many high ranking soul masters in the private boxes to react in shock.

"This… such potent life energy! It feels like I'm standing at the source of all vitality."

"Just feeling this from a distance makes my body feel rejuvenated. No wonder this is the final item."

"An engraving blade with such powerful life energy? What material could it possibly be made of? Even without knowing its impact on soul tool engraving, the life sustaining energy alone is worth more than a hundred million."

Experts across the hall couldn't tear their eyes away from the blade, captivated by the allure of this mysterious item.

Xu JiuJiu's lips curled into a triumphant smile, glancing sidelong at Wei Na with a hint of pride. So what if you managed to win the soul bone for three million? This the true showstopper is Star Luo's real gift for the teacher!

Wei Na bit her lip, somewhat grudgingly admiring the Star Luo Empire's audacity. In this era, even titled Douluo can only expect to live a few hundred years. This blade, with its powerful life energy, would likely appeal to even a legendary figure like my teacher. Sure, it's a huge investment, but for the right empire, enlisting the support of a Limit Douluo is well worth it.

But after having already showcased her devotion by bidding on the soul bone, Wei Na refrained from making another bid. To do so could seem overeager, which might appear insincere to her teacher.

Her gaze shifted toward Ye Wen, and she was surprised to find his expression calm, his eyes resting coolly on the screen with not a hint of the hunger she'd expected.

Xu JiuJiu also noticed this, sharing her bewilderment. Something's off really off!

As the auctioneer reactivated the protective soul barrier, many of the dignitaries in the private boxes furrowed their brows, missing the flow of life energy.

The auctioneer's voice rang out, "You've all had a taste of the Soul Devouring Blade's immense vitality. As you can see, it's no longer a mere tool but a true artifact. We admit that even our experts remain puzzled by its composition, but one thing is certain wielding it will grant continuous access to its life sustaining energy, potentially extending even a titled Douluo's lifespan by a century.

"Now, I announce the starting bid: fifty million gold soul coins, with minimum increments of one hundred thousand gold soul coins. Additionally, we are opening our special asset verification process to ease any financial burden. But please bid cautiously. Failure to pay will result in forfeiture of half your assets to cover the costs."

With that, the initial bid of fifty million swiftly escalated to seventy million as dignitaries clamored for this rare treasure.

Xu JiuJiu watched as Ye Wen remained unmoved, her curiosity reaching a fever pitch. She cautiously asked, "Teacher, are you really not interested in such a rare treasure?"

Her voice pulled Ye Wen out of his thoughts. Moments ago, he'd been recalling the Soul Devouring Blade's backstory. In the original timeline, it had been auctioned at a minor event and bought by Huo Yuhao, who used it to strengthen his spirit power and revive Electrolux's fragmented soul. Yet, due to Ye Wen's influence, the storyline had changed, and the Soul Devouring Blade had now found its way into Star Luo's main auction.

As a seasoned cultivator, Ye Wen had seen countless artifacts; the Soul Devouring Blade's life energy was insignificant in his eyes. If he wanted life energy, he could simply collect it from the Lake of Life in the Star Dou Forest.

However, Ye Wen was still intrigued by one question: the original corruption of the Soul Devouring Blade was a result of a powerful, dark force a Level 9 Soul Engineer and titled Douluo had intentionally cursed it centuries ago. With time, most current Soul Engineers had surpassed that level, but purifying it would still require a Limit Douluo or someone of semi divine power.

But as far as I know, Ye Wen thought, there's no one at that level in Star Luo City besides me. So who purified the blade?

Just then, the auctioneer's voice echoed through the hall once more.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the current bid stands at one hundred million gold soul coins! Yes, we've reached one hundred million. Any further bids? Otherwise, the Soul Devouring Blade will soon belong to a distinguished guest from Shrek Academy."

Hearing this, Ye Wen's suspicions were confirmed. After all, Shrek Academy had recently been set back a substantial sum of eight hundred million gold soul coins. How could they have gathered such an enormous sum so soon?

In Shrek's private box, Long Wu was eyeing the item with obvious excitement. He was aware that Shrek didn't have that kind of financial strength at the moment, but he was in luck: his father, Tang San the Tang Sect Master and a prodigious member of the Sky Sect had come to his aid.

Ye Wen couldn't help but laugh at Tang San's brazenness. He was pulling every string to pave his son's way to greatness, bending every rule possible.

Life energy like that in the Soul Devouring Blade would not directly enhance Tang Wu's martial spirit, but it could nurture his body and soul power to give him a higher foundation for future growth.

However, Ye Wen's amusement only grew.
