Chapter 18 - chapter 18 The Mother-in-Law Arrives

Onik was just beginning to calm down after receiving the unexpected news of support from his sister and parents. He sat holding Ira's hand. Just then, there was a restless sound of someone entering the door.

Onik quickly stood up. Standing at the door of the room was Ira's mother. Her face clearly showed the anxiety of long days, the fatigue of travel, and the fear for her daughter's physical condition.

Then Ira's Mom arrived.

She did not say a word. She only rushed towards her daughter lying on the bed. Ira was still asleep.

Ira's Mom (Touching her daughter's face with trembling hands): "Ira... my child... what suffering you have gone through! I left you alone and came away! Because of me, because of your father's wrath..."

Ira's Mom cried as she touched Ira's forehead and gently placed her hands on her stomach. She perhaps felt their unborn grandchild for the first time.

Ira cries upon seeing her mother.

Ira, even in her sleep, seemed to release all her suppressed pain at the familiar touch and sound of her mother's crying. Even without opening her eyes, a few drops of tears rolled down, and her body trembled.

Ira's Mom quickly sat beside her daughter and embraced her.

Ira's Mom: "No more, my child. No more pain. I have come, your mother has come. No one can separate you two now."

Seeing this scene, Onik could no longer control himself. All the struggles, the burden of insult, and the fear for his child's life—everything seemed to find release at this moment.

Onik cries.

Onik quickly stood beside Ira's Mom and embraced both of them. This crying was the cry of relief, liberation, and reunion.

Onik (In a voice choked with tears): "Aunty... everything will be alright. We will fight together. With you by our side, there is no more fear."

Ira's Mom held Onik tightly and said through her tears: "You two have won, my son. Your love has won."

The small hospital room was instantly filled with love, remorse, and the light of new hope.

Flashback: The Swimming Pool Memory

Amidst the reunion of the families and the peaceful hospital atmosphere, a glimpse of an old memory flashed through Onik's mind. This memory belonged to their warm and restless early days of love, when their relationship was still a secret.

Then a small flashback is seen.

It was a sunny day, and Onik arrived where Ira was relaxing.

This was a memory from before Ira got pregnant.

Ira is swimming in the pool. The pool water is clear. Ira was standing in the middle of the water. She finished her swim and was slowly approaching the edge of the pool.

Onik suddenly appeared there. Ira saw him and smiled softly.

Then Ira just stands there. She hadn't fully emerged from the pool, submerged up to her knees in the water. Water droplets sparkled on her wet body.

Ira was minimally covered—a thin dress which clung to her body due to the water, and everything is visible. All her freshness, her physical attraction, was exposed before Onik.

Onik (In a suppressed voice, with deep fascination): "Ira..."

Onik's eyes fixated. His breathing quickened. The intensity of the distance, secrecy, and attraction all combined to overwhelm him. Onik struggled to control his emotions.

Onik cannot control himself. In that moment, his religion, society, or family pressure—nothing mattered. Only Ira and the intense attraction between them.

Onik realized that if he stayed there for another moment, he would lose his self-control. He quickly gathered himself. He did not look back.

Onik (Clearing his throat, quickly): "I... I'll be right back. You get ready."

Onik quickly turned and began to walk away. Ira smiled sweetly, seeing his restlessness.

Onik walks away in that moment. He walked away, not defeated by his physical attraction, but to protect Ira and their relationship from the instability of his emotions. That weakness, that love—everything flashed before Onik's eyes now, as his wife lay on the hospital bed.

The Present: 9 Months of Waiting

The flashback ended. Onik wiped his eyes. The fear and uncertainty that had gripped them three months ago had now cleared, bringing a calm, anticipated morning into their lives.

The present. 3 months later.

Onik's sister had brought them from Cox's Bazar to Dhaka for better medical care and attention via an air ambulance. They are now in a quiet, secure flat arranged by Onik's sister. The parents visit frequently, but Ira has been given complete rest.

Ira is now nine months pregnant. Her belly is huge. The baby could arrive at any moment.

Ira's belly is big. She struggles to get down from the bed to the floor. In this condition, every small task seems like a huge mountain to her.

Soft morning light fills the room.

Onik is helping her. His government job has become much more flexible, as his superiors know about the family problems and his wife's serious condition. He spends most of his day now dedicated to Ira's care.

Ira (Panting): "Oh... I can't take it anymore. Even going to the simple toilet feels like crossing a small mountain."

Onik quickly knelt beside Ira. He carefully held her hands, placing his other hand on Ira's waist.

Onik: "Slowly... Queen. Easy. We are together! Just rely on me, darling. We have to endure this little pain now. Only a few more days."

He helped Ira get out of bed very gently, one foot, then the other.

Ira: "What would I do without you, Onik? Truly..."

Onik (Smiling and kissing Ira's forehead): "I am here. And now you are not alone. Your mother, my mother—both are constantly looking after you. Come on, I'll cut you some warm milk and apple. Then we'll sit together and look at today's date."

Onik slowly walked with Ira, supporting her. Every step he took was the ultimate proof of love and responsibility. Their love had overcome all barriers and now stood firm, with complete family support, awaiting life's greatest gift.

Final Crisis: The Fall

Onik was slowly helping Ira walk, trying to pass the time with jokes and smiles. Just at that moment, the smile vanished.

Ira suddenly tensed up. Her eyes widened in fear.

Ira (In intense, suppressed pain): "Onik... no! Again..."

Then Ira suddenly began to have stomach pains. This pain seemed more intense than the warning six months ago. Ira held Onik's hand tightly with great difficulty.

Onik's face turned white with panic. He quickly tried to support Ira.

Onik (Crying out): "Ira! What happened? No, no! It's not time yet! Calm down!"

But the pain was so severe that Ira could not hold herself up. Her grip on Onik's hand loosened.

Ira (In pain and exhaustion): "I... I can't do this anymore..."

In the blink of an eye, Ira falls unconscious and collapses into Onik's arms.

Onik (Screaming): "Ira! Ira! Open your eyes! Ma! Is anyone here? Ma!"

Onik was completely stunned. No mistakes could be made this time. With all the strength in his body, Onik lifted Ira into his arms and quickly rushed out of the room, shouting for an ambulance. Their long period of waiting had ended.

Hospital: No Consciousness, Only Crying

Onik ran like a madman, carrying Ira, rushing out of the flat. The ambulance siren quickly brought them to the hospital.

Ira was quickly taken to the labour room on a trolley along the emergency corridor. Onik stood outside, only able to see his beloved lying lifeless and helpless.

The doctors and nurses quickly got to work. Onik stood outside the glass door, tears streaming down his face.

Ira does not regain consciousness in the hospital.

Inside, a nurse quickly set an IV line on Ira's hand. Another doctor placed a monitoring device on her stomach, trying to hear the baby's heartbeat. The head doctor checked Ira's pulse; her expression suggested the situation was extremely serious.

Onik felt his breath constricting. He quickly called a nurse over and asked:

Onik (In a trembling voice, shouting): "What are the doctors saying? Ira... why isn't she conscious? Is she okay?"

The nurse showed sympathy and quickly went back inside. Onik looked through the glass again. He saw the doctors placing a stethoscope on Ira's chest, then looking at the electronic monitor.

They are checking if there is a heartbeat.

At that moment, the sounds from the monitor were the most important sounds in the world to Onik. He felt that if a flat line appeared on the monitor, his whole life would end.

The doctors spoke to each other in low tones. Their grave expressions made Onik even more panicked.

Onik (Collapsing): "God... please! Please... don't let anything happen to her! My Ira! My child!"

Onik cries. His crying was quiet, silent. He leaned his head against the glass door, supporting himself with both hands. His whole body was shaking. Could they save Ira this time, just as they had six months ago? Was this final moment the ultimate price of their love?

Just then, a nurse came out of the glass door, a syringe in her hand. Onik quickly looked at her, with a tiny bit of hope in his eyes.

Nurse: "We are trying to stabilize her body. Please be calm. Let us do our work."

Onik only nodded, but his tears did not stop. He just waited—for good news, for a confirmed heartbeat sound.

The Mothers Arrive

As Onik stood petrified by fear outside the glass door, his crying adding to the silence of the hospital corridor, two people arrived and stood beside him—whose arrival months ago was unimaginable.

Then Ira's Mom and Onik's Mom arrive.

They arrived almost simultaneously. Onik's mother might have arrived quickly from Dhaka via the air ambulance arranged by his sister. And Ira's mother might have left quickly after calling Onik. Fatigue from the long journey was on their faces, but even more so—the terror for their child's danger.

Ira's Mom (Running in, placing a hand on Onik's shoulder): "Onik! Son! What happened? Where is my daughter? Why is she not conscious?"

Onik (Looking up, looking at his mother, breaking into tears): "Ma... Aunty... I don't know! They are checking inside. Heartbeat... I... I don't know anything!"

Onik's mother quickly pulled Onik close.

Onik's Mom (Holding Onik tightly): "Be calm, my son! You can't break down. Ira is very brave. And your child... they are a fighter like you. We are all beside them. You just pray."

Ira's Mom looked towards the glass door. Inside, her daughter lay on the trolley, and the doctors worked beside her. Ira's Mom stood firm, combining all her anger, regret, and fear.

Ira's Mom (Taking a deep breath): "I know my daughter will come back fine. We have overcome such a great storm; we must not surrender now to anything. Onik, be strong. The two of us are here now. You are not alone."

The two mothers, who were bitter rivals just months ago, stood united to save their children's lives. They stood with Onik between them, gazing steadily at the glass door, in silent prayer.

Doctor's Announcement: The Final Fight

As the two mothers comforted Onik, the doctor quickly came out of the delivery room. Although worry was etched on his face, a small light of hope was visible.

Doctor (In a quick voice): "Mr. Onik? Are you all the patient's relatives? Please listen. The patient is not conscious, but we are trying to stabilize her quickly. Her body has gone through a lot of strain."

Onik (Stepping forward hurriedly): "Doctor, please! How is my wife? And my baby? Is everything okay?"

Doctor: "We are getting a heartbeat for the baby, but it is weak. Considering the patient's condition, we cannot wait any longer. We need to perform an emergency C-section now."

Ira's Mom (In panic): "C-section! In this state?"

Doctor: "There is no other way. The baby's life is at risk. We need your consent. Make a quick decision."

Onik's Mom (In a firm voice): "Doctor, do whatever you think is best. We give our consent. Just save them both."

Onik (Holding the doctor's hand): "Doctor, please. I trust you."

The doctor quickly went back inside. Onik, his mother, and Ira's mother—the three stood outside the glass door, waiting for the result of the most critical moment of their lives. The silence of the corridor felt like a stone pressing down on their chests.

The Shock and The Awakening

Onik, his mother, and Ira's mother—were staring breathlessly at the glass door. Inside, the doctors and nurses were rapidly preparing for the C-section. The lights in the operating theatre were intense.

Just then, Ira's monitor data began to worsen rapidly. Ira's breathing rate suddenly decreased further.

Doctor (Quickly, addressing the nurses): "No! The patient's pulse is weakening! We cannot take her to the operating theatre in this condition. Prepare the defibrillator immediately!"

The nurses instantly brought a defibrillator (the electric shock machine). Onik's face, standing outside, turned ashen with fear.

Doctor (Shouting): "Clear!"

The three people outside closed their eyes.

Then the Doctor suddenly gives the electric shock.

For a moment, intense electrical energy entered Ira's body. The sound of the machine and a muffled cry reached the ears of the three people standing outside.

But immediately after that intense jolt, the unexpected miracle happened.

Immediately, Ira wakes up with a big breath.

Her eyes opened. Her face wrinkled in severe pain, but she woke up!

Ira (In a weak voice, through the pain): "Onik...!"

The doctor inside quickly looked at the monitor.

Doctor (With joy): "Alright! She is conscious! Heartbeat is normal! Alhamdulillah! We were able to revive her! Quickly! Take her to the operating theatre. She can fight now!"

Onik had never felt such immense relief in his life. He, his mother, and Ira's mother—all three burst into joyful tears. Their prayers, their love, had finally worked. Ira herself had returned to fight the last battle for her child.

The Ultimate Moment: The Victory of Love

Since Ira regained consciousness, the doctor did not delay. Ira was quickly moved to the operating theatre. Outside, the worried two mothers and Onik waited for the long, difficult moment.

Time seemed to stop outside the operating theatre. After about an hour, an intense sound emerged from behind the glass door.

First, a sound of crying. Very faint. Then the crying grew stronger.

Onik, his mother, and Ira's mother—all three almost slumped to the floor in relief.

A short time later, the door to the delivery room opened, and nurses came out with a tiny baby wrapped in a towel.

Nurse (With a delighted smile): "Congratulations! It's a healthy baby girl!"

Then a doctor came out and congratulated Onik.

Doctor: "Both the baby and the mother are doing well. The C-section was successful. However, the baby is a little premature, so she needs to be kept in an incubator for a while. Rest assured."

Onik cried with joy and grabbed the hands of his mother and mother-in-law. All their struggle for their child was fruitful.

Reunion: The Bond of Mother and Child

After a while, Ira was brought out of the delivery room and into a cabin. Her body was still weak. Onik, the two mothers—everyone gathered around her.

With the doctor's permission, the nurses gently brought the baby to her mother.

Then Ira gets the baby. When the small, soft baby was placed in her lap, Ira's eyes filled with tears.

Ira cries. This crying was not of pain, but of extreme joy. She saw the greatest prize of her life—that small warrior who had endured every storm in her womb.

Ira quickly forgot all her pain. She gently embraces the baby with all her emotion.

Ira (Whispering, kissing her daughter's forehead): "My darling... you have come! You have come! We won, Ma... we won."

Onik watched the scene where his wife and his child—the ultimate proof of their love—were safe. The two mothers, leaning their heads on each other's shoulders, laughed through their tears.

Their love story, which began amidst intense conflict and silent agony, ended in the sacred bond of a new life, forgiveness, and family reunion.
