Chapter 40 - Chapter 39: Echoes of a Silent Goodbye

"Some things are louder when left unsaid."

Back in Korea, the quiet hum of conversation filled the warm living room of Dokkaebi's mother's house. A tray of herbal tea sat on the table as Choel's mother, Choen's mother, and Dokkaebi's mother exchanged light chatter. Their laughter rang like wind chimes until a message pinged on Choel's mother's phone.

It was a video from Kiyo.

"Looks like the kids pulled off something special," she smiled, tapping on the screen.

The video flickered to life.

The flickering candles, the cake glowing like a dream, and there she was—Choen. Dressed like she had stepped out of a fairytale, holding the cake, her eyes shimmering under the soft lighting. Then came Choel—his surprised face melting into emotion as he pulled her into a spontaneous hug, his hand lingering just a heartbeat longer than expected.

The mothers giggled.

"Aww," Choel's mom beamed. "Look at that hug!"

"She really did all that for him?" Choen's mother said softly, eyes unreadable but warm.

But from the hallway, a fourth pair of eyes had caught the video.

Dokkaebi had paused.

He watched the embrace. The light. The way Choel looked at her like she was made of stars. A silent beat passed, heavy and still. And then, without a word, Dokkaebi turned away and walked to his room, shutting the door behind him like a sigh lost in the wind.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles…

The mini birthday celebration had ended, but the night wasn't done. Glitter's members and team now walked into a luxurious hall shimmering with gold and light. A private party — one held just for Choel — attended by VVIP fans, entertainment CEOs, and close industry insiders.

Choen, draped in a midnight blue dress that hugged her form like starlight, walked beside Choel. Cameras flashed discreetly. Greetings were exchanged. Compliments flew her way like confetti.

"She's the one?" a CEO whispered.

"She might be the surprise we didn't know we needed," another nodded.

Choel stayed close, never once letting her out of sight.

Jack, always ready to stir the air, leaned in. "You're basically his lucky charm at this point."

Choen laughed nervously, brushing hair behind her ear.

The evening flowed on—music, speeches, laughter.

But when the party ended and the cars pulled up outside the venue, Choel didn't immediately follow the others.

He lingered.

So did she.

Outside the velvet ropes, the city lights painted the streets in gold. Choel looked at her, his expression unreadable yet tender.

"There's something I've been meaning to tell you," he said, his voice low.

Choen blinked. "What is it?"

But he hesitated.

"It's late," he finally murmured. "You should rest."

She tilted her head, confused. "That's it?"

He smiled faintly. "For now."

And just like that, the moment slipped into the quiet night, unanswered… but far from forgotten.
