For a moment I was excited, before suspicion took its place. There's no way a jewel from a skeleton in a dark cell isn't at least a little cursed, especially when it's supposed to have a parasite in it. Someday it's going to change me into Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean. So, System, why do I feel like you have something more horrible in store for me?
System: "Because I do have something horrible in store for you."
"And are you going to tell me what it is?"
System: "Now, where would the fun be in spoiling the big surprise?"
"You're enjoying this, aren't you? Who am I kidding—of course you're enjoying this. Why wouldn't you, knowing my luck?"
System: "Hey, if you're going to be like that, I'm not going to tell you the super important secret. It's, like, really important."
"It's probably not that important then."
System: "Is too."
I turned around to leave, but as I did, I spoke to the system. "You just want more attention." And for a second, I could almost hear the system pout. But as my hand wrapped around the door handle, I heard the system again.
System: "Hey, wait. This isn't how it works. You're supposed to be like, 'Oh great system, please tell me your important information,' and I'd be like, 'No, I couldn't… okay, fine, if you insist.'"
But that's when I turned around as if to yell at some invisible being. "Tell or don't tell me, I don't care. I'm hungry, I'm tired, and my back is killing me from sleeping on the hard floor of a wooden box. So I'm not doing this right now."
That's when I heard the system speak in a small voice, like a child who just found out Santa isn't real. Why do I feel like I just kicked someone's puppy? I thought. No—he's the reason I'm in this hell. But the longer I stood there, the guilt crept in.
I rubbed at my forehead, feeling the headache this whole situation had become, and turned back to the imagined invisible person. This is crazy, but what the hell.
"Okay, I'm sorry, alright? I'm just having a bad day. If you want, you can tell me the important secret."
System: "If you kill the dungeon boss, you can get a cool reward."
"Thank you. That's nice to know."
