Chapter 16 - ch 16

Gabe could not lie if anyone asked if he was interested. After all, this would be his first interaction with an adventurer. The sound of the creaky door alerted not only Gabe, but the customers of Ox's Grazer. All conversation stopped as they watched a Stout bearded man with an apron walk in. His face jollier than a saint's and his head covered by a large chef's hat, The man walked up towards Matt. Gabe could here the people whisper as they watched the possible cook approach the innkeeper

"Its C ranker Terpetit! its actually him!"

"I know right!? what do you think he found this time?"

"Maybe a new herb? a seasoning? who knows."

Matt ignored the chatter within his inn, likely used to it, instead addressing the adventurer in chef gear. "Been a while Ter. Did a raven steal your map or something? took you way to long to visit." Terpetit haughtily laughed, his large frame bobbing up and down. "You always had a funny way to greet others Matt! I thought I would stop by to see the old stomping grounds. It feels like yesterday when I first showed up here."

Matt grabbed a dirty tray and began to clean it as they conversed. "Speaking of, we just happened to get some new initiates just yesterday." "oh?" Matt's words had definitely gotten Terpetit's attention. "Where can I find them? The guild always appreciates new talents." Matt jabbed his thumb towards Gabe and Gobsung, who were still on the stairway that led to the rooms. Having been immediately called out, Gabe froze for a second before he responded. "Er, Hello. as Matt said, I'm Gabe and this is my travel partner." A snore was herd from his side in response. The tree creature turns to see that the goblin was sleeping while standing up!

"Well, nice to meet you! I am Terpetit and its always great to see friendships grow, no matter how strange they seem." Gabe really wanted to face palm at that moment, but restrained himself. Terpetit continued on, gliding pass what could have been an awkward moment. "Anyways, like you probably heard, I'm currently working with the guild to find some new help. Would you be interested?" The excitement in his tone told Gabe that Terpetit really seems to enjoy his job. "Why yes, we were actually about to inquire about how to be adventurers." "That's wonderful! I will get you guys added to the list of applicants, however, there is a catch."

Gabe was internally cursing as he heard that. 'Of course their was a catch! nothing this good could come free.' "What's this catch you speak of?" A helpless smile appears on the cook clad adventurer. "You would have to pay a gold coin to apply. The guild doesn't ask how you got it, but just to bring one. This part is always what drives away newer recruits who have just left the nest so to speak." The smile then returns to his face. "But luckily, the guild has been able to work something out. If you help around your area, the guild will pay you for your efforts." It took a bit for Gabe to understand what Terpetit was implying. "So people who wish to join have to get odd jobs to pay to get in?" "Odd jobs... well that is one way to put it, yes. That was an interesting name to give it." Terpetit's response caught Gabe somewhat off-guard. Deciding to change the subject, He asks, "Well who do we speak to for these labors for the guild?"

At the moment, Matt, returned, having finished up the last pile of dirty dishware. "That would be me. I also happen to have struck a deal with the guild to keep my pockets lined if you know what I mean." The toothy grin on Matt shows that he takes great pride in his resourcefulness. "Honestly, I am somehow not surprised it would be you I would have to deal with." Gabe sighed a bit as he thought of reporting to the old man before him. Terpetit however was glad to see them get along so well. "Seems that no further introductions will be necessary. I have got to go soon, so before I do, does either of you have any more questions?" Gobsung, who had just woken up, was wiping the drool from his mouth when asked. "Me got one. You make food?"

Terpetit found himself speechless, whether that be from the broken way the individual spoke or from how dumb the question was left to be determined. Shaking of his brief stupor, Terpetit answered, "Why yes, I do make food. Most of my adventure career mainly involves getting new things to work with, be it recipes or resources." The C rank adventurer said his goodbyes and left the inn. And then the monster duo's trouble began.

Not even an hour later, one goblin and one tree creature found themselves on dish duty for the day. The one after had been plucking weeds, planting seeds, and acting as a scarecrow(three guesses for who it was, the first and second don't count). The month soon passed as the two worked day and night to scrounge up two gold coins, with the best one being when herding sheep. Who knew that a goblin's singing could really lead a crowd by the nose?

"We finally did it. Two gold coins for the guild. by tomorrow we should make our way over." Gabe stretches his arms, a satisfying pop being heard. Gobsung meanwhile was stuffing his face with jar of honey, too focused on it to respond. As they neared the inn, however, someone walked out from the shade of a nearby tree. "Great work on getting those coins. Unfortunately, we will be taking those from you."
