Chapter 24 - Etheral Revenants -1

The scene in the hall was chaos, but it was less chaotic than it could've been if Jack hadn't gotten rid of the power supply to the doors that were holding back the revenants.

Then again, it was still chaotic, and the chaos had only intensified when the doors that were holding back the noise of the confrontation going on behind them opened.

Because before the doors opened, some of the visitors had realized they couldn't remove their hands from the spheres, and they froze in horror at what happened next.

The doors opened, exposing them to the line of fire between Jack and the terrorists. Surely enough, Enak's armour effortlessly countered the normal bullets, but it only protected Jack, not others.

BANG! BANG! BANG! THUD!

The sound of gunshots broke through the room, stifling the cries and screams of the people gathered there. Jack erected a Kana slab barrier to prevent the bullets from entering the hall.

Jack was moving fluidly. He was weaving through the terrorists, striking with utmost precision. He used his body strengthening and the speed boost he got thanks to Enak to slash through the monsters of Humans standing in front of him. He channeled his energy into Kazekiri, the sounds of the energy crackling around the blade mingling with the sound of slashes as it effortlessly cut through the people in front.

Jack was also handling a handgun at the time. As he swung the sword around, he would use the gun to cover his back. He was like a fortress moving through its enemies.

"Help!!! Th- Th- Those are the Ortho Sapiens! That's their logo on the helmet—I saw it on the internet!" a voice shouted through the screams, pointing at the room where Jack was fighting.

"What!!! HELP!! Somebody call the POLICE! I CAN'T RUN, MY HAND IS STUCK HERE!" another woman shouted.

"The man with the coat, he's fighting them. He's using the Ikanamis. Stay quiet—if we can't help, the least we can do is not break his concentration," a wise elder man shouted. The crowd fell silent, except for the sounds of thuds and gunshots from the confrontation, and muffled cries of the people trapped inside.

Just then, another sound pierced the chaos—its intensity louder than everything except the gunshots. A sound that even made the moving fortress stop, because his oh-so-perfect plans could be faltering at this very moment.

Thud! THUD! THUD!

The sound gradually intensified. Jack flicked away the man he was fighting, and he slammed hard against the wall as Jack looked in the direction of the sound.

A big dent was slowly appearing on the sliding doors that were holding back the ethereal revenants. The crowd fell silent. What unknown brute force was behind those doors intrigued them as well. Was there another man behind those doors that was fighting them?

But Jack knew what was behind the doors. The number of Ortho Sapiens was not decreasing because they kept bringing in reinforcements. Thankfully, the room wasn't big enough to bring in Kana weapons of the Ortho Sapiens. He made a decision, lifted the man he was fighting by the neck, and threw him with full force at the control table. The crackle of electrical sparks rose as the machine powered off from the impact.

THUD!

This was the final impulse the door could handle. A big hole made its way through the metal, followed by heavy footsteps. A hand grabbed the wall of the hole—a hand that was charred, enshrouded in blue flames. Another hand appeared on the other side of the wall, and the revenant pushed apart the hole.

The hole grew bigger, and the being eventually stepped through. It looked around the room, perhaps looking for which one to attack first. Must've been hard choosing with all those Kadestone spheres spread out, filled with such delicious energy, and the Kratians around them waiting like desserts.

Then, it roared! No, it shrieked—an ear-piercing screech broke out of its mouth. Jack sprang as the revenant moved toward a family. He put as much energy as he could into a punch, and it definitely reached the revenant—but it didn't land as hard as it was supposed to.

Jack lifted a nearby rod with his psychic Ikanami, and after taking it into his hands, he struck as hard as he could. The attack landed, and the revenant was thrown back into the hole it had crawled out from.

Jack straightened up and sealed the door to the room from the Ortho Sapiens with a Kana slab.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" Enak shouted in his mind.

"What?"

"Kana attacks don't work on revenants, and you know that—and yet you proceeded to deliver an energy-laced attack," Enak rebuked him.

"Well, I didn't think—"

"Good. Now that blue one is close to exploding."

"Shit."

"Be careful, don't let him get a hold of you. He will bite all the way to your dantian and feed on the Kana energy inside. Be careful," Enak warned as they both saw the unmistakable glint of blue flames inside roaring back on.

Suddenly, there was a loud shriek in the room—a familiar scream.

It was Diana. She was standing alongside Ethan, clutching her hand.

She had cut away her hand to dislodge herself from the sphere and was now healing it back.

"Jack, don't use Kazekiri on him, it will work against you," she shouted, her voice laced with pain as her arm slowly grew back.

Jack nodded and went inside the room of the Revenants, clutching nothing but an iron rod in hand. He walked inside to see a few Revenants sprawled on the floor. Dead? Or simply devoid of energy? Jack thought as he looked inside.

"The blue one must've absorbed their energy by force to gather energy to break the door," Enak said.

There were still a lot of Revenants to take care of.

"ALRIGHT, YOU DEAD WEIGHTS, COME AT ME!" Jack said as he spotted an axe on the wall. He initiated his body strengthening Ikanami, cracking his bones as he got ready for the fight.

He dashed—no, he pierced through the Revenant group, swinging his axe around, leaving a mass of heads or severed limbs behind him. Bodies sprawled behind; there was no blood—it seemed only energy kept them alive. He weaved through the mass of bodies that burned with flame ranging from red to green. The only blue one he had crossed was lying at the back, slowly getting back on her feet. Its neck was broken and was dangling on its shoulders.

Both Jack and the Revenant burst towards each other, determined to eliminate the biggest threat right now.

Jack slashed his axe at the man, cutting his chest. It didn't affect the Revenant at all, but Jack was still moving due to the momentum of his strike.

Suddenly, the Revenant lifted Jack by his neck and bashed him through the Revenants, pinning him against the sliding doors.

A pierce attack wasn't possible with an axe, and there was no room for a slash.

"GRAHHHHH!" Jack screamed as the Revenant chomped down on his shoulder, bit off the flesh, and swallowed it.

He had to get away. He had to free himself, and in desperation, a man makes mistakes.

So did Jack.

He pulled out Kazekiri, but this wasn't the only mistake—the worse mistake he was about to do came next.

He stabbed the Revenant with Kazekiri. The blade pierced right through the Revenant, right through his dantian.

"YOU IDIOT!" Enak shouted in Jack's mind.

As soon as it did, Kazekiri, whose blade was enveloped in Jack's energy, came into contact with the stronger foreign energy of the dantian. As soon as the foreign energy invaded the dantian of the Revenant, there was a blast—an ear-splitting blast rang throughout the building. The Revenant exploded, and the force was so strong it made Jack crash through the doors. He smashed through three walls and disappeared under a heap of rubble.
