Lucian and I stood off to the side of the room, the eerie quiet of the coven's sanctuary settling around us like a shroud. The air smelled like herbs and something faintly metallic, like old blood and spells that clung too long to stone. I watched as the witches and wizards bustled around our other selves—Lucian and me from this world—tending to them with precise gestures and glowing salves. The two of them had been pulled into the safety of the coven's threshold before things could spiral into a bloody tragedy. But even with the worst averted, the unease didn't lift.
