Chapter 16 - The Damned Dyad

A clash of the gods raged, creation and destruction entwined in a relentless cycle. The Lord of Flames incinerated all that the Plant of Life birthed, and the Plant of Life flourished amidst the destruction, each struggling for dominion over the other. The flames surged, eager to consume the flourishing forest, while the plant countered, weaving new life into existence.

Vines erupted from the ground, entwining his limbs, pulling him down with desperate force. Trees sprouted around him, constraining him where he stood as they all tried to hold him.

There should be no god born of earth, the lord mused with a wicked glint in his eye. Something like this should be utterly impossible. The god said, amused at what he witness too.

Tobi's body ignited, searing away any of the vines and bark that bound him to the ground and he stood and shone brilliantly ablaze.

I see, the hunter stated simply.

The hunter ascended, his fiery form a beacon of light, before plummeting like a meteor toward the Plant of Life, charging at breakneck speed for an attack.

So why is it, Hunter? the lord asked, curious. Why is it that a god is here where it shouldn't be? There are higher beings watching you so just what had you done? The god asked, his voice laced with wicked glee.

Tobi seized the plant of life, dragging it through its own domain, reducing all in their path to ash. The once-vibrant garden became a wasteland of soot and ruin as he wove havoc upon the life that it brought forth.

I wish to kill Fate. The hunter responded frankly.

Smoke veiled the world, yet the Plant of Life stood resilient, even if wilted momentarily before blooming once more in all its divine glory and radiance.

So you know of Fate, that god but boy, even I know one should not commit such heresy to a being so high, the god uttered gravely.

A root coiled around his leg. Despite the inferno surrounding him, it did not burn. With tremendous force, it flung him across the vast domain. He crashed through trees, turning them to embers, before regaining control by dragging his feet against the ground and using his fire like thrusters, standing firmly despite the overexertion his body took from repeated use of a god's power. He wielded a god's power, but he was no god, and the Plant of Life had no true wounds.

This isn't going well for you, boy, the Lord of Flames remarked bluntly.

Tobi lunged again, but the Plant of Life conjured a wall of trees. He tore through them, but his momentum slowed and eventually halted as an arm of bark gripped his leg and hurled him skyward, slamming him into the dome above.

It is not, Tobi admitted.

A colossal root surged upward, piercing into him on impact as he was pinned against the apex of this dome.

You can barely scrape against this god. What chance do you have against Fate? the god replied frankly as he grinned in malicious rapture, enjoying the spectacle.

His defeat seemed nigh, but soon a sun ignited in the sky, burning away the encroaching roots. as the sun descended on the plant's domain, it brought forth an explosion that reduced all life to ash, revealing the hunter once more.

It doesn't matter what he does the ending will remain the same Tobi said cryptically, annoying the Lord of Flames, who scowled.

Bringing his hands together, Tobi summoned two blazing stars. He gritted his teeth, channelling his remaining strength as the fire turned a searing blue, then hurled them at the god.

You act too arrogantly, Hunter. Do not forget your place. Don't mistake yourself for a god, the Lord of Flames growled, angered.

The Plant of Life stepped forward, absorbing the impact with ease as roots coiled around its form, expanding it into a towering colossus. Tobi gazed up at it, undeterred, as he had one goal at this moment.

I am no god but all stays the same. even you can't escape what I am, the hunter said honestly. Despite the absurd statement, it was not to mock or belittle the god; he spoke what he believed true.

A sharp pain coursed through Tobi as he felt his body was burning, though to him it was more of an annoyance than a problem.

You really are insane, hunter. Let's see if there is merit in what you speak. the god laughed, stripping his power from the Hunter.

The now massive plant brought its arm up before it swung down forth a hammer of bark and life to crush the hunter, whose power now waned as he could barely hold the fist but even then fear never came to him, nor did hate for the god in front of him or inside of him. Nothing was there in his gaze. the lord of flame observed all of this curiously, digesting what he saw inside the man's head. The hunter didn't even think himself human?

You truly are mad, boy

The Lord of Flames stated as a wicked grin formed in the flames. Power surged through Tobi's veins. Laughter, loud and maniacal, resounded in his mind before the god finally spoke.

Very well, then, hunter, I accept you as what you believe you are. I shall give you all the power I have and access to my whole arsenal. I do hope you can handle it, he said warningly as his wicked grin widened.

Tobi's mask shifted from a smile to a blank slate with two hollow eyes before a hollow laugh escaped his throat and eerily at ease, then swatting aside the crushing fist.

Lu dy skurut mordu Tobi declared, understanding the words he spoke then.

I am become death

Both man and god laughed, unified in madness and destruction. The Lord of Flames revelled in the havoc to come, his power surging through this human vessel who believed himself death. And as one, they would set this newly born god's domain ablaze.
