"I knew I'd lose," he murmured, his voice soft but laced with defiance, "but to think I'd end up in a bed." He pushed himself upright, his muscles tensing as he tested his body. To his surprise, he felt no pain, no lingering ache from the battle—only the faint exhaustion of mana depletion. The memory of his reckless use of magic, far beyond his reserves, flooded back, and he winced at the thought of his collapse.
