Chapter 293 - Chapter 293: New Bark Town

"Continuing your adventure, huh? That really fits your personality."

At night, in the player dorms on Indigo Plateau, a familiar voice came through Silas's communication screen—it was Professor Rowan, who happened to be free at the time.

He was in his lab, sipping tea and snacking on small desserts.

"I mainly want to see more of the scenery," Silas replied, his face full of happiness.

"Looks like losing the match didn't affect you much?" Professor Rowan asked with a warm smile, observing Silas.

"Hmm…" Silas hesitated for a moment. "I can't say it didn't affect me at all."

As one of the many people who had crossed over, to be honest, coming to the Pokémon world was probably one of the better choices he could have made.

First of all: safety.

Although there were dangers, they weren't too severe. At least he didn't have to worry about being randomly attacked by rebel groups or irritable powerful people while walking on the streets. Most people in the Pokémon world at least weren't inherently malicious.

This might be related to the theory that humans evolved from Pokémon. Among Pokémon, 99% are pure-hearted and kind. Even the rare ones with a darker side aren't truly evil.

Of course, some Pokémon are exceptions—and the same goes for humans. Poachers and a large portion of people in criminal organizations fall into this category.

But because humans are numerous and communication between species is difficult, people tend to overestimate how "dark" their own kind is. It's basically a form of survivor bias.

Compared to a generally peaceful life, occasional criminal activity draws huge attention. If chaos were constant, no one would care—there would be nothing noteworthy about it.

As for dangers from wild adventures—well, that's on you. Even in his previous life, if he wandered alone into the wilderness without preparation, death was a normal risk. Add Pokémon into the mix, and it's only a little more dangerous than before.

Secondly: the joy of life.

The existence of Pokémon is the greatest joy.

Although not as idyllic as in the anime, living under the rule of the League and enjoying life with Pokémon is relatively easy.

After all, Pokémon were a big part of Silas's childhood. His curiosity and desire to explore these creatures ran deep.

Most importantly, in the Pokémon world, your power mainly depends on your Pokémon. Unlike in fantasy worlds where you personally fight using your own strength, such cases are rare here.

Ancient, brutal battle traditions like Wild Battles have long been considered obsolete—at least in the public eye.

With technological advancement and Pokémon production, life in this world is extremely comfortable.

If Silas hadn't chosen to become a Pokémon Trainer—the career with the highest investment and rewards—he could have easily become the richest person in a region. Gold, multiple companions… none of it would have been a dream.

Finally: goals.

Honestly, life in his previous world was happy and stable, and when he first crossed over, Silas couldn't accept it.

He wasn't an orphan. Why should he suffer through this? He wasn't a masochist, nor dissatisfied with life. In his previous life, he was born into wealth and had everything he needed.

But as time went on, Silas had to face reality, especially after discovering he had an "advantage" here.

What to do? That was his first thought.

Then he realized the answer was obvious.

Since he was in the Pokémon world, the choice was clear: become a Trainer.

If he didn't, it would be like he never came here.

And so, Silas began his life as a Trainer.

From the first Rattata, to Pidgey, and now his six partners; from a clueless rookie bounty hunter to a locally famous veteran, then to a highly efficient and exaggerated "mercenary" from a lone, unsupported individual to having the support of Pewter Gym, Professor Rowan, Professor Oak's lab, and eventually making many friends.

Over seventeen years in the Pokémon world, Silas felt he had become truly capable.

And the facts supported him—the League's recognition proved it.

Being born an orphan only highlighted his strength.

But now… what comes next?

Before the next tournament, Silas was a little uncertain.

Was he not strong? Absolutely strong. His current abilities, even without considering age, were enough to rank high worldwide. Sixteen finalists in a regional tournament may seem like many, but it's actually very few.

He now fully deserved the title of "Trainer."

Even if he didn't train as intensely as before, with his six Pokémon, Silas could become a region's Elite Four in no time—a solid world top 100.

Such strength allowed him to fully enjoy Pokémon battles, not to mention the ability to train new partners at any time.

So why run around, completing meaningless tasks daily, training Pokémon, and becoming stronger just to reach the Elite Four? Wasn't that enough like an immersive game?

As for sightseeing… he didn't care much.

This puzzled Silas.

Yet for some reason, he felt uneasy.

His twenty-something years in his previous life, plus over seventeen years here, hadn't changed him as a young man.

Silas was never one to torment himself. Objectively, the Elite Four's status could easily compare to the few high-ranking officials or successful people in his previous life—it was a perfect target.

Reaching that ending in a game would be a highlight.

But the two-month-long tournament gave him a different perspective.

"Anyway, my next goal is to become a Pokémon Master!"

The words came firmly from Silas's mouth.

Professor Rowan, who hadn't known what Silas had been thinking, froze in surprise at this sudden declaration.

Then he smiled warmly: "Is that so? Well, you have a long way to go before becoming a Pokémon Master. Keep it up!"

Even if he didn't know what the young man had been thinking, having a clear goal is always good.

"Pokémon Master… sounds cool!"

Outside Professor Rowan's lab, two kids sneaking a listen had their eyes light up. One black-haired boy shouted excitedly.

"Keep it down!"

The brown-haired kid glared sharply at him. "And you? You're just dead last. Don't even think about it—I'm the one who's going to become a Pokémon Master!"

His words were full of disdain and frustration.

"What are you talking about, Gary?" The boy being scolded was, of course, Ash. His face turned red, but he couldn't come up with a reply in time.

Compared to Gary, who always ranked first at school, Ash—who also usually ranked last was indeed struggling.

It was just a matter of order.

After some teasing and scuffling, the two quickly moved away from Professor Rowan's lab.

Children's interests come and go quickly, that's how it is.

But sometimes, a single sentence from a child can stay in your memory for a long time.

Hearing the commotion outside, both Professor Rowan and Silas smiled helplessly.

"These two kids… they're always so lively. I'm just different, I guess," Professor Rowan said, reflecting with a sense of history.

"No way, Professor. We still need you to uncover the mysteries of Pokémon evolution," Silas replied with a smile.

Professor Rowan wasn't too old—just over fifty, still in the prime of life in this world. However, many older researchers looked a bit aged due to the mental strain of their studies. Professor Oak was similar.

"Hahaha! I think so too. Pokémon evolution is so wonderful, it's worth constantly exploring," Professor Rowan laughed heartily.

The old and the young chatted casually, back and forth.

"All right, then you should get some rest," Silas said.

After a while, their conversation finally ended.

Silas hung up the call and lay back on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He raised his right hand, opened his palm, and then clenched it into a fist.

"I could live without striving for my own goals, because I don't care, because I have no great ambition—I just want to live well.

But at least I can't disappoint my Pokémon, and I can't disappoint those who trust me."

He thought silently.

Somewhat dramatic, somewhat lacking ambition, but that was who he was.

He closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

"Unfortunate~~"

A scream echoed through the empty forest.

Mist swirled, and for a moment, it was hard to see the person screaming.

"Down."

Next to the figure, a much taller Pokémon sighed helplessly and patted the Trainer's shoulder.

Of course, it was Silas, now back on the road, with his ace Pokémon, Blaziken.

"What do you mean?" Silas gave Blaziken a slightly fierce look.

"You really have no sense of luck, do you? You insist on ignoring the map and trusting your instincts on which way to go."

Blaziken wasn't fazed by Silas's glare. Its youthful voice resonated clearly in Silas's mind.

Since the tournament, Blaziken had become much more skilled at using Aura.

At least now, it could convey long strings of speech without mistakes, something it couldn't do before.

"Trainer's decisions aren't about gambling. It's to meet more Pokémon!"

Feeling his pride wounded, Silas argued fiercely.

"You call that unlucky? You're just stubborn," Blaziken shot back, using the same blunt logic it had learned from Pidgeot.

The surrounding mist grew denser.

"Fine, fine."

Under these circumstances, Silas quickly gave up on his pale arguments.

"Come out, Pidgeot."

Ignoring Blaziken's faint protests, he recalled it and sent out Pidgeot.

"Pidgeot!" it cried, as if saying, "Piece of cake, watch me."

"Good to see you," tearful Silas said, hugging Pidgeot.

Pidgeot, unseen by Silas, rolled its eyes. Ever since the tournament, it felt its Trainer's brain had become increasingly odd.

Thinking this, Pidgeot obediently crouched.

"All right, let's go."

Silas climbed onto Pidgeot's back, full of energy, and patted its wings.

"Pidgeot!"

The bird's high-pitched cry echoed through the small forest. Its sheer presence brought a hush to the surroundings.

"Oh."

Silas looked down at the passing lake. His voice carried through the air.

Unnoticed by him, a Pokémon with a headpiece like a blue gem, flowing white ribbons like wind, and blue-and-white patterned body silently watched the pair growing smaller in the distance.

Had Silas seen it, he would have recognized it immediately—Suicune, the embodiment of the north wind.

Standing on the lake, radiating blue light, Suicune disappeared into the forest mist in an instant. This was a familiar spot for it, but no one knew.

"Woohoo~"

Silas waved his arms at the oncoming wind in the sky.

Pidgeot slowed down, obliging its Trainer.

Even so, given Pidgeot's flight speed, Silas quickly arrived at the first location of his journey via the main road.

Seeing the small town in the distance, Pidgeot and Silas landed.

"This is New Bark Town."

Recalling Pidgeot, Silas looked at the wooden sign and snapped his fingers with a confident smile.

"Please show your ID."

A soft voice came from behind him.

"Yes, Officer Jenny."

Silas didn't move a muscle. From Jenny's surprised gaze, he pulled out his Pokédex from his pocket.

Professor Oak's voice arrived at the perfect moment.

"All right, verification complete. Welcome to New Bark Town of the Johto region."

Jenny saluted Silas.

Afterwards, she winked at him: "A genius Trainer, as expected~"

Silas smiled politely and spread his hands.

Jenny also smiled and quickly disappeared into her hidden spot.

Putting away his Pokédex, Silas glanced at the simple map Jenny had handed him. Finding a direction, he set off into New Bark Town.

"Hello, Johto League."
