Chapter 210 - Chapter 210: The Advance Payment and Mareep’s Strange Personality

If nothing unexpected happens, the ruins on Mount Podoro—where the Ancient Gengar, Ancient Alakazam, and Ancient Jigglypuff were sealed—are going to appear earlier than expected.

This is because Binu Coast is located right near Pallet Town, backed by Mt. Miacha and Mt. Podoro.

All the current information perfectly matches what he already knew.

There's no way two places would have ruins that are exactly the same.

It couldn't be such a coincidence, Silas thought.

Still, the fact that this change was triggered by the early appearance of the Grampa Valley was something he hadn't anticipated.

"What do you think, Silas?"

While he was lost in thought, Professor White finished her long lecture and asked him for his opinion with great interest.

Silas smiled politely. "I think what Professor White said makes a lot of sense."

As for what exactly she had said—he hadn't listened at all.

He had been too busy thinking about other things.

Whether it was that his expression looked too natural, or Professor White was simply too absorbed in her own research, she didn't seem to notice his half-hearted response.

She continued her studies without caring.

Silas let out a quiet sigh of relief and returned to his own thoughts.

The only issue was, he didn't remember any object in that ancient ruin that was related to the "King."

Could this mean that those three Pokémon couldn't actually be controlled by the King of Pokélantis?

From the way the anime portrayed it, that did seem to be the case.

Alakazam and Gengar only fought with each other, like typical Psychic-types and Ghost-types locked in rivalry. If it weren't for Jigglypuff interrupting, it was hard to imagine any human managing to control them.

Those artifacts only served as basic sealing devices, nothing more.

Silas frowned, once again regretting that in his past life he hadn't finished watching all the Pokémon anime or played every single game.

Otherwise, he wouldn't always feel like he was missing some crucial detail.

As for the whereabouts of the Queen's followers, he had a few guesses.

The Pokélantis Empire once stretched across both what are now the Kanto and Johto regions. If they fled, they likely wouldn't have stayed on the same continent.

Most likely, they went southwest—to what is now the Hoenn region.

Going northeast would have meant crossing into another nation that was hostile to Pokélantis at the time, so that option was unlikely.

If it was Hoenn ruins, then… the Ancient Rota Ruins?

If he remembered correctly, in the future, Professor Mez showed Ash a stone tablet that described how to enter the Rota Ruins. The writing style and linguistic structure looked very similar to that of the Pokélantis Empire.

Thanks to his photographic memory, Silas could recall this vividly. Even though he had only glanced at it in his previous life, with a little effort he could instantly grasp the key details.

He remembered that Relicanth lived in those ruins—one of the strangest Pokémon.

One hundred million years ago, Lileep went extinct, Cranidos, Shieldon, and Tirtouga appeared, Tyrantrum ruled as apex predator, and Amaura was frozen in ice.

One hundred million years later, all of these Pokémon only survive as fossils—except for Relicanth, which still exists unchanged to this day.

It is the only Pokémon considered an ancient Pokémon that isn't a Fossil Pokémon.

"What are you thinking about?" Santai came over and casually threw an arm around Silas's shoulder.

"Nothing much. Just wondering what the so-called 'hidden power' of the Pokélantis Empire was."

Silas quickly came up with a reasonable excuse.

"Hmm, probably just some strange weapon. Like one of those so-called ultimate weapons from legends."

Santai answered, "Or maybe it was a powerful Pokémon. Although I don't think people back then could have controlled something stronger than Ho-Oh, it's still possible."

Silas nodded slightly, agreeing with his guess.

"Well, we'll find out soon enough. It's just an archaeological dig—once we locate the site, we can start working right away."

Santai chattered on endlessly by his side. He was easily the most talkative member of the entire security team, going on nonstop from morning till night.

"Professor White, we found something here!"

"Professor White, over here too!"

As the exploration and excavation progressed, good news kept coming from all directions.

Silas followed Professor White, running back and forth through the ruins.

Abstract statues of various Pokémon, clay idols in the style of the Pokélantis civilization, and even golden ritual tools—one discovery after another appeared before them.

"It seems the refugees must have lived here for quite a long time. Otherwise, such a complete collection wouldn't exist," Professor White said as she carefully examined the items spread across the area with a magnifying glass.

Silas stood nearby, watching absentmindedly.

Well, this is exactly why the security team's job was so easy.

Throughout the whole journey, he felt almost guilty about the payment he was receiving.

After all, he had foolishly accepted Sabrina's offer of a payment at least thirty times higher than what was reasonable for his strength.

At one point, he even suspected Sabrina might have hypnotized them when she made the offer.

As an Advance Trainer with Pokémon nearing the level of an Quasi Elite member, Silas's appearance fee was already two to three million per mission.

That might sound like a lot, but to keep all six of his main Pokémon improving, that amount barely covered the costs.

"I'll just tell her later that I'll consider this one a free favor. Forget the Evolution Stone and Magnet," Silas thought helplessly.

He really couldn't get used to this whole "money falling from the sky" situation.

But it never crossed his mind that Sabrina might not accept his refusal so easily.

That night, after completing the escort mission, Silas flew back to Viridian City's Pokémon Center on his Pidgeot.

After finishing his Pokémon exchanges and walking into his room, he noticed a small package on the desk with a note placed on top.

He rubbed his forehead in frustration.

"Seriously, these psychics delivering packages are way more convenient than Pokémon mail," he muttered to himself.

If Sabrina happened to be monitoring with her psychic powers, he'd consider that complaint aimed directly at her.

He had even gone to the trouble of sending her a message ahead of time, but apparently, it was useless.

Silas picked up the note.

"Inside the package is the payment for this mission, plus the next four.

I'm giving it to you in advance—no need to thank me. ❤"

The neat handwriting made it obvious who had written it.

Five missions' worth of payment, huh? He hesitated for a moment. That sounded much more reasonable.

Normally, the next mission wouldn't be for at least three or four months. By then, the Indigo League Conference would probably be over.

Given his future strength and reputation at that time, this fee wasn't unusual at all.

In fact, if it dragged out longer, the average payout of twenty million per mission would actually be a bit cheap.

"Well then, I guess I'll happily accept it," Silas thought, a smile tugging at his lips.

Truthfully, refusing such a fortune had hurt his heart. Now that a more legitimate reason had been given, he could take it with a clear conscience.

After all, having the opportunity to hire a future Elite Four or Champion-level trainer was an absolute steal for Sabrina.

Who knew how long these five missions would even stretch out.

Humming to himself, Silas opened the package. Inside was a stone resembling jade with lightning patterns across its surface, as well as a Magnet.

He tossed out Mareep's Poké Ball, planning to let it hold the Magnet.

"Mie~"

Mareep appeared and gave Silas a sideways glance.

Maybe it was because it had spent its egg stage beside Ash's friend Gary, listening to his… colorful rants about Ash, but this Mareep's personality was, in Silas's view, rather unusual.

In simple terms, it was irritable and stubborn—completely unlike the normally gentle nature of most Mareep.

Not that this was necessarily a bad thing. At least he didn't have to worry about it lacking the drive to battle and train.

The only issue was… when its words were translated into human language, they could be a bit hard to accept.

"Mie."

Mareep bleated, its tone implying: This Trainer's brain broken again? Why'd you call me out? Don't you know newborn Pokémon need their rest?

Silas twitched. He clearly remembered that when Mareep was less than a day old, it had been cute and obedient.

He subconsciously forgot the part where Mareep had once retreated into its own Luxury Ball of its own accord.

Surely Pidgeot and Blaziken hadn't corrupted it already? It had only been three or four days.

"Come now, this is a Magnet. It'll be very useful for you.

I worked super (lazy) hard (ate snacks) to get it for you."

He put on his best "kind uncle" smile as he spoke to Mareep.

"Mie~"

Mareep's pale violet wool, charged with static, fluffed up even more as the Magnet drew closer.

When they made contact, the Magnet instantly merged into Mareep's body.

"Bzzzt—crackle—pop!"

Yellow sparks jumped wildly across Mareep's wool, making it look like it had puffed up explosively.

Silas flinched in shock. "What the—? No one ever said baby Pokémon couldn't hold items!"

"Are you okay? Does anything hurt?"

He ignored the tingling shocks running through his hands as he checked Mareep's legs and body carefully. His voice came out a little strained from the buzzing.

"Mie~!"

Mareep replied with surprising vigor. It felt more energetic than at any point since it had hatched.

Silas double-checked on the monitor panel of Zero, but found nothing unusual. Relieved, he let out a breath.

Mareep gave him a quick farewell, kicked off with its hind legs, and returned to its Luxury Ball in a flash of red light.

It was planning to rest and discharge some electricity. Doing that inside the room would fry its fragile Trainer, and Mareep at least understood that much.

Silas bent down to pick up the Luxury Ball.

He didn't think Mareep's personality was bad—just different compared to its predecessors.

But that was the nature of Pokémon.

No two Pokémon in the world would ever have exactly the same personality. That's what made them so captivating.

In fact, if his Mareep had been gentle and docile like most others, Silas might have had to struggle to get it used to battles.

"Alright, everyone—time for dinner!"
