Chapter 204 - Chapter 204: The Bounty Got Bigger

Silas nodded. "It's true."

There was no need to lie about this. The prosecutors had certainly questioned everyone. Besides, this was just a routine inquiry—the battle recorder's footage wasn't something that could be faked.

"Alright, thank you for confirming."

Miho Iruma turned back to her computer, expressionless.

"Also, there are a few more questions. First…"

They went through a rapid series of questions and answers.

Takenori Shirai sat to the side, typing everything down.

"Once again, thank you. We're finished here. I hope you achieve a good result in the upcoming tournament."

Miho smiled faintly at Silas as thanks for his cooperation, then gestured for her assistant to see him out.

Shirai walked Silas to the door.

"Hey, if you don't mind… could I get your autograph?" he asked suddenly.

"Huh?" Silas blinked in surprise.

"I've always been a fan of ancient Pokémon. The League was in an uproar over your discovery of that ancient Pokémon reserve in Grampa Valley.

And come on—you leapt six ranks and passed the Breeder certification in your debut year. I'd be crazy not to get a signature. If you become a Breeder Master, or even an Elite Four member—or Champion—this autograph will skyrocket in value."

Shirai grinned ear to ear, speaking with exaggerated hand gestures.

He handed Silas an ordinary red-and-white Poké Ball and a pen, motioning for him to sign it.

Silas accepted it with an odd look and scribbled his name. It was… hard to describe the feeling.

After signing, he handed the Poké Ball back, then hesitated before asking:

"If you don't mind me asking… about him—how will the League handle it?"

He didn't say who, but they both knew.

Shirai tucked the Poké Ball away like a priceless treasure. "It's not unprecedented.

Everyone understands the choice he made in that moment, but the League can't officially condone it.

If they did, it would set a precedent that could cause all sorts of problems.

We can't sacrifice one Pokémon's life for another's. It wouldn't be fair to them.

Most likely, the punishment will follow the usual rules, you know what I mean."

Silas nodded silently. "That's good."

"Yeah. Anyone would've done the same—you all didn't stop him either, did you?" Shirai shrugged.

The League would have to issue punishment, but it wouldn't be as harsh as the official announcement would make it seem.

"Shirai!"

Miho's voice rang out from inside the conference room.

"Coming, boss!"

Shirai shot Silas a playful wink before hurrying back inside.

"How was he?" Miho asked coolly, eyes on her computer.

"Not bad. Pretty mature, considering he grew up alone. Hard not to be.

But he still has that youthful energy. Just like the evaluations said." Shirai plopped into his seat beside her.

"Seriously, boss, Professors Oak and Rowan already evaluated him. Why keep digging?"

He didn't understand why she was so fixated.

"His file just doesn't sit right with me," Miho replied.

On her screen was Silas's profile.

"Oh, come on. He's just lucky. Happens every year—he just happens to stand out more.

If he were really as rotten as Hunter J, the professors wouldn't be supporting him like this."

Shirai sighed. His boss was great—beautiful, sweet-voiced, kind-hearted. The only problem was she couldn't control her emotions when it came to Pokémon hunters.

"Hmph. Hunter J…" Miho's eyes flashed coldly at the name.

"Is the next trainer here yet?" she asked.

Her interest in Silas faded quickly. She had only followed her instincts by having her assistant do a light check. It wasn't even a real test.

As Shirai had said, Silas was probably fine.

And once someone became an official League affiliate, small issues weren't really issues anymore. Miho wasn't that rigid.

"Yeah, the next one's on the way."

"…Wait, you really wanted that autograph?"

"Of course! I always planned to. Might as well earn a little extra—gotta save for my future wife."

"The League pays you plenty. Didn't you pocket some extra last time too?"

"Boss, don't joke like that! I'm a proper prosecutor, a public servant of the League!"

They laughed and chatted casually.

Soon, as the next trainer who had participated in the mission arrived, they returned to work.

"Hello, your four Pokémon are fully recovered."

With Nurse Joy's warm greeting, Silas thanked her, retrieved his partners, and left the Pokémon Center.

He still hadn't submitted that bounty mission from this morning about the Noctowl feather.

Even if it wasn't much, every little bit counted.

"Togepi~!"

Silas held Togepi in his arms as he walked toward the Bounty Hunter Center.

Along the way, Togepi scolded him for not letting it battle those "monsters." It raised its little arms and flexed imaginary muscles, showing how tough it thought it was.

Silas smiled, comforting the mischievous little fellow.

Like all children, Togepi's tantrum passed quickly, and soon it returned to its usual cheerful self.

It happily munched on a cream puff in its hands. No ice cream this time, but cream was good enough.

Silas laughed and patted its head.

After handing in the bounty task, he stopped by a restaurant he'd visited often since childhood to eat dinner and chat with the familiar owner before heading back to his room at the Pokémon Center.

By then, part of the League's official feedback from the mission had already been announced.

The most direct update was that the bounty reward for Team Rocket Executive Bishas had increased by several figures. Along with him, the wanted amounts for the other Executives had also been raised considerably.

"I say, do you really think Giovanni approved of this?" a blonde woman playing with a black tulip said dryly to the man seated at the head of the table.

"Don't put it like that. This is all for Team Rocket's greater cause," replied a mustached man wearing a yellow mask.

"Well then, Lord Bishas, may I ask what you gained this time?"

Another man, wearing a black beret with bluish-green hair peeking out from his temples, asked with great respect.

"At the very least, I've made further progress on improving the Dark Ball, haven't I? And I also left the League with misleading information."

Bishas, masked, sounded especially pleased.

"If Giovanni hadn't chosen not to hold you accountable, hmph…"

The man sitting in the shadows at Bishas's right hand snorted coldly.

"Now, Lord Archer, there's no need to be angry. What Lord Bishas said isn't without merit," the bluish-green-haired man said calmly, trying to ease the tension.

"Proton, when are you going to drop that annoying habit of using honorifics? You deal out punishments so casually, but then you speak so politely—it really irritates me," the tulip-holding woman sneered.

"Domino, your temper is always so stimulating. How wonderful~" Proton replied without the slightest change in tone.

Suddenly, the huge screen in front of them lit up.

"Lord Giovanni's orders."

The six Executives present—including the two who had remained silent so far—all stood and greeted the figure on the screen.

"I'll announce Giovanni's next assignments for you all.

Domino, you will infiltrate the Pokémon National Research Institute as a researcher under the identity of 'Domino.' Your cover information has been sent. Do not expose yourself.

Petrel, go to the Johto region. One of our partners there has run into trouble. Giovanni says you know how to resolve it.

Ariana, continue cooperating with Hunter J's team. Push them if necessary; Giovanni is dissatisfied with their progress.

Proton, Viper has a matter that requires your help. Find time to assist him.

After completing these tasks, you and Archer will continue overseeing base operations as usual.

As for Lord Bishas—Giovanni expects your project to succeed."

With that, the screen went black, giving them no chance to respond.

The Rocket Executives left one after another.

"My project succeed? Of course it will succeed~"

Bishas's sinister voice echoed in the conference room as his eyes fixed on a photograph—one of Trainers battling Dark Pokémon.

He tapped a finger against one of the faces.

"I smell it… that familiar scent~"

The next morning.

"Mmm~"

Silas stretched as he crawled out of bed, brushing aside Servine's tail as he started a new day.

Ah, the air in Viridian City was always so refreshing. He thought this as he jogged down the street.

"Hey, Silas, back from your journey?"

"You've been gone half a year without word. Did you bulk up again?"

"Silas! Got any cool new Pokémon?"

Along the way, familiar townsfolk greeted him warmly—young and old alike.

Most orphans wouldn't receive this kind of welcome. There were too many orphans in the League for people to lavish sympathy on each.

But Silas was so outstanding that people couldn't help but notice him.

To many parents in Viridian, he wasn't just "someone else's kid" to be compared to, but rather "look at how amazing Silas is—you should learn from him!"

"Come on out, everyone. Today's training begins now!"

He arrived at his favorite training ground, brimming with energy, and tossed out five Luxury Balls.

"Pidgeot!"

"Blaziken!"

"Gigalith!"

"Servine!"

"Togepi~!"

The five Pokémon answered him cheerfully, full of spirit.
