Chapter 64 - Chapter 64: The White Cape

After carefully reading through the manual that Nurse Joy had given him, Silas finally understood the nature of the training here.

At the White Cape, the most massive and violent tidal currents in the entire Kanto region surged.

Here, the best method for Trainers to train their Pokémon was to bring them to the seaside training grounds at the cape and have them resist the crashing tsunamis and strong ocean currents using their bodies and moves.

Pokémon would often grow significantly through this process. Some even managed to grasp particularly difficult moves thanks to these extreme conditions.

Silas finally understood why the advice from senior Trainers on the Pokémon forums had all been along the lines of you'll feel the overwhelming power of nature here.

The most likely reason was that these veteran Trainers had also suffered plenty under nature's wrath while training their Pokémon here and wanted the next generation to come and "enjoy the same blessings."

But it had to be said the training results here were indeed excellent, which explained the popularity among Trainers.

At the end of Nurse Joy's guidebook, there was also a very prominent safety warning.

It reminded all Trainers never to bring Fire-type, Rock-type, or Ground-type Pokémon near the ocean or worse, into it. The same went for Pokémon that couldn't swim.

Otherwise, if tragedy struck, there would be nothing but regret.

It was clear this warning was aimed at rookie Trainers.

Because even though the Pokémon League's education was widespread and effective, many novice Trainers still lacked a proper understanding of type interactions.

It wasn't hard to imagine the kind of fear a Fire- or Rock-type Pokémon would experience if thrown into the sea.

Fortunately, his main goal this time was to train Pidgeot. His other two Pokémon were currently in the middle of saving up energy for their evolutions.

Of course, Silas wasn't foolish either.

The cape wasn't entirely lacking in training grounds for other types only that, compared to nature's generosity, those required a bit of a price.

As he strolled along the small town's paths, he could hear the chatter and greetings exchanged between Trainers.

"Oh my god, I was scared to death. My Tentacruel nearly got swept away by the waves. Thank goodness I had proper safety precautions."

"That's nothing. My Kingler ran out of the water on its own I didn't see it for two days.

I thought I lost it! But then it found its own way back."

Far from the hustle and bustle of urban life, the White Cape felt like another world altogether, disconnected from the smoky clamor of the cities.

Here, most of the people were Trainers, and so the daily discussions naturally revolved around training experiences and insights.

Of course, there were also plenty of couples who came here to admire the beauty of sunsets and tidal surges.

On a related note, according to incomplete statistics, at least ten couples jumped off the cliffs of the White Cape every year.

They called it "witnessing the eternity of love." Silas found it completely incomprehensible.

He walked into a berry shop by the street and checked out the prices of the berries inside.

If purchased in bulk, the price was not much different from the rates offered by the Hunter Guild.

Probably because so many Trainers passed through here, quite a few of them made a living by selling ordinary resources like berries.

What caught Silas's attention most in the store, though, was a single berry placed in the center for promotional purposes the Scaleberry.

A genuine Scaleberry could be used to enhance a Pokémon's Speed stat.

After consuming it, a Pokémon's speed would increase significantly, and its physical development would become more refined.

However, no one had been able to cultivate Scaleberries through artificial means so far. Only a very small number of Trainers had ever found them in untouched wild areas or deep forests.

And even then, a Scaleberry tree would only bear one or two berries at most making them exceedingly rare.

The one in the store was merely a projection display for advertisement.

Silas asked the store owner about it, and the owner explained that it was the shop's signature promotional treasure.

While he indeed owned real Scaleberries, most people couldn't get their hands on them no matter how hard they tried.

As for whether someone might try to steal them well, that wasn't very realistic.

The owner had originally obtained two Scaleberries.

One had been given to Professor Oak's Laboratory as a research specimen. In return, the other was kept perfectly preserved within the lab and the owner himself gained some protection.

All Silas could do was admire the man's luck. As for why the shop owner hadn't used the Scaleberry himself, it was because he had already achieved a decent rank in the region's open tournaments before ever coming across the berry.

His Pokémon's potential had more or less reached its limit, and feeding it a scale Berry would have been a complete waste.

After finishing his journey and returning to his hometown, Vermilion City, he eventually opened this store nearby.

He intended to use the berry as a promotional centerpiece to attract more customers to buy berries from his shop.

It worked surprisingly well. With that marketing gimmick, he had earned a decent amount of Pokédollars.

Everyone has their own way of life, and the shopkeeper's days were indeed quite fulfilling.

After finishing the conversation, Silas casually bought a considerable amount of Berries and asked the shopkeeper to have them delivered to his room, then turned to leave.

This purchase only worsened his already tight financial situation.

Ever since he had asked Brock to help him purchase some special rocks and send them over, Silas had only 3 million Pokédollars left to his name.

Buying Berries just now cost him another 500,000, leaving him with only 2.5 million.

There wasn't much he could do. While he could get resources at half-price from Pewter Gym, it didn't mean he had unlimited access.

Considering the number of special rocks his Roggenrola would need, Silas figured most of his quota would be spent on that.

So for more common resources like Berries, it was better to buy them outside whenever possible.

Right next to the Berry shop was a rental training facility open to the public, fully equipped with all kinds of machines and tools.

Of course, compared to Pewter Gym, it was a bit lacking, but it was more than enough for basic training.

It wasn't expensive either. After asking about the price, Silas learned it only cost 100,000 Pokédollars per day.

Given the wear and tear on the facility and the maintenance of the machines, that price was acceptable.

Silas immediately went back to his room, opened his backpack, and sold off a portion of his own training equipment. Previously, he hadn't known there was such a facility available now that he did, there was no need to carry so many devices.

In the wild, he didn't need a lot of intensive training anyway just enough to maintain his Pokémon's condition.

After some calculations, even though the equipment was second-hand, the wear was minimal, so the resale price was decent.

He sold six machines in total, netting him 400,000 Pokédollars.

While it didn't quite cover the cost of the Berries, at least it helped stop the financial bleeding a little.

Glancing at the time and hesitating for a moment, Silas decided that he should use this window to complete the B-rank mission he had picked up earlier.

If luck was on his side, he could be back by early afternoon around one or two o'clock and after handing in the mission, he could go check out the seaside training ground.

He'd bring Pidgeot along to do some proper training while he was at it.

After confirming the direction, he set out toward the nearby mountain range.

..After a brief hesitation, Silas decided to let it go.

Although it was another 2v2 battle, sending out Roggenrola and Combusken would also have a high chance of victory. However, the priority right now was to complete the evolutions of both Pokémon.

With that in mind, Silas left Brock another message: "Help me ask your uncle after Roggenrola evolves into Boldore, should I wait some time before evolving it into Gigalith, or can I just trade it right away without waiting for the right timing?"

Even though he already knew the answer, he still needed to play dumb a little.

Including the courier reward promised by Brock if he won the championship, Silas currently had just over 11 million Pokédollars.

That definitely wasn't enough, so in the coming days, he'd need to find a way to make more money.

His head felt a little heavy. After resting for a week, his thoughts were still a bit unclear, and his reactions were a bit sluggish.

Forget it better to rest for now and deal with it tomorrow morning.

Half-asleep, he lay on the bed, and soon, Silas drifted into dreamland.

The Night Passed Quietly

Early the next morning, Silas completed his usual morning workout and, at the same time, sent the Leaf Stone to Brock.

While jogging around the city, he discovered that Vermilion City, this port town, had quite a few interesting places.

For example, he passed by the entrance of a facility where a large banner was hanging:

"Pokémon Ping Pong! A doubles match played by Trainers and their Pokémon—come and join the fun!"

It looked like a ping pong training center.

It was something novel this was the first time Silas had seen the sport of ping pong exist in this world.

Outside Vermilion City's Pokémon school, there was also a banner advertising a Pokémon orienteering race.

It had to be said, because of how widespread Pokémon were in this world, even though not everyone could become a true Trainer, most people still had their own Pokémon.

However, due to lack of training and natural talent, the Pokémon that most people owned were generally very weak.

That didn't stop people from creating all sorts of activities centered around these miraculous creatures.

Perhaps it was precisely because of this that people and Pokémon could live together so harmoniously.

Even though some remote wild areas still operated under the law of the jungle, within cities under the League's jurisdiction, people lived quite happily.

As he passed by a house with a nameplate reading "Sakuragi," Silas turned a corner at the intersection and headed straight for the Bounty Hunter Center.

After carefully picking a mission, he used his upgraded access level to take on a B-rank task worth 300,000 Pokédollars.

He confirmed that if he completed five more B-rank missions, his own Hunter Rank would be promoted to B-rank as well.

According to the Nurse Joy's benefits system, at that point he'd be able to accept up to three B-rank missions at once, which would greatly increase his earning speed.

As for A-rank missions, that was a tier far beyond his current capabilities. Besides, even in a big city, A-rank missions didn't appear often maybe once a year.

For most bounty hunters, B-rank and lower long-term missions were their main source of income.

He flagged down a Dodrio that had stopped nearby, swiped his card for the ride, and asked it to take him to the outskirts of the city.

Silas then tossed out Pidgeot's Poké Ball and secured himself onto its talons, letting it fly toward his destination.

After "slowly" flying for about seven or eight minutes, Silas spotted a stretch of cliffs and coastline.

This was Routes 24 and 25.

Also known as the White Cape, it was the northeastern tip of the Kanto Region, named for its pure white sands.

It was also a popular tourist destination—many couples chose to go on dates here.

If the anime was to be believed, this would eventually be taken over by Professor Bill to summon the mysterious shadow giant Dragonite.

But in this world, that seemed unlikely.

Because this area was a well-known outdoor training ground among Trainers, and had already developed into something of a small town with complete facilities, it was hard to imagine it being restricted.

Even if Professor Bill tried to claim this area for himself, he couldn't just block access for all Trainers it would cause widespread backlash.

After all, Bill was born in Goldenrod City, not even from the Kanto region, which already created a sense of distance.

Most likely, he would only be able to claim a corner of the cliff to build his lighthouse.

Whether that would actually happen remained to be seen. Silas gave a pat to Pidgeot's talon.

Understanding the signal, Pidgeot began a slow descent.

Landing at the designated landing zone, Silas unfastened his safety harness. After thanking Pidgeot, he returned it to its Poké Ball.

Trainers were coming and going in large numbers all around him.

Many of them had arrived by Flying-type Pokémon, and Pidgeotto was among the more common choices.

However, Silas's Pidgeot was quite rare. Its appearance was also extremely striking.

A few people turned their attention toward him—he looked like he was pretty strong.

Just as he was about to leave, a Charizard landed nearby with its Trainer on its back.

The surrounding people immediately cast envious glances in that direction.

Charizard, being one of the Kanto starter Pokémon, represented strength once fully evolved. A Charizard reaching its final form meant it was a powerful pokemon.

Not to mention, Charizard had a cool and stylish appearance many people saw it as their dream Pokémon.

Silas quickly walked out of the landing zone. He had no time to admire others. He figured he'd be staying in this area for a while.

His main objective was to prepare for evolutions, and he could take the opportunity to train Pidgeot well in the meantime.

Looking around, the place was bustling with people.

Most of the buildings were wooden structures, located some distance away from the shoreline.

Shops, Pokémon Centers, inns, battle facilities everything was available. There was even a branch of the Bounty Hunter Center here.

He wasn't sure if the missions offered here were as numerous as those in the city.

Just in case there weren't any B-rank tasks here, Silas had taken one beforehand so his time wouldn't be wasted.

Besides, with Pidgeot's flying speed, a round trip only took about twenty minutes. For the sake of earning money, he could tough it out and deal with his fear of heights.

After entering the Pokémon Center, he booked a room for two weeks fourteen days. That was where he'd be spending the next half month.

After tossing his things into the room, Silas felt much more relaxed. Taking only three Poké Balls and his Trainer ID, he set out to explore the town.

He still had to wait for the various training materials he had asked Brock to purchase and send over. Those probably wouldn't arrive until the afternoon.

Taking advantage of the morning, he wanted to get a sense of the surrounding area and terrain so he'd be better prepared to operate in this place.

Even though he had already checked out some information on the Pokémon forums, most of the posts there were vague. They simply said this was a great place to train.

But in what way it was ideal, no one explained clearly.

Silas asked Nurse Joy for an information pamphlet and began reading through it.
