Chapter 5 - SHIELD Takes Notice

The three cops were scared out of their minds. They usually get paid by Kingpin to ignore these types of crimes, or they show up and pretend they got into an intense fight by firing bullets at random. Now they were fighting actual shooters who were trained and outnumbered them 3 to 1. Captain Stacy was faring no better; he was considering letting them escape instead of chasing, since it was a clear death sentence. He brought out his radio and sent a message across.

"20 armed individuals just shot mags of bullets inside the xxxxx circus and are now escaping. 3 officers are believed to be down or possibly deceased. We are also taking fire. They are trained and are also carrying a purse and a green hat." Captain Stacy said with fear and dismay. George was not an idiot in the slightest. He knew the NYPD was corrupt and being paid off by Fisk, but these men were not Fisk's, as they usually were. When they finally heard them stop shooting and get in a car, they peeked and fired a few shots before instantly turning back against the corner, heart pumping, hands trembling. They heard the cars drive off and finally relaxed. Some collapsed on the ground, and moisture formed around their eyes. Before they could relax for long, a new order came over their radios. It was SHIELD posing as FBI agents. When they picked up the radio call from Captain Stacy, they decided to intervene, although it might not seem like an effort or reason for SHIELD to get involved. 20 armed men jacked 5 cars, shot a man, then shot mags worth of bullets, and shot at police officers while fleeing, carrying a purse and a green hat. Something was not adding up, so it was worth checking out.

The call ordered them to pursue the cars they took, and more officers would assist soon after. SHIELD agents were quick with their orders. More than 30 agents were en route, some to investigate the CCTV, others actually to chase down the people who would have the answers to the mystery. While the police officers would usually be inactive this time, they were getting orders from high above, and any misstep could lead to the end of their careers. All officers available were put to chase the suspects, getting live comms from the radios, and were informed of the location every single car was heading towards. While the forces were out chasing, the detectives arrived at the circus were many people were scared and trembling, and some even still passed out. When they made contact with the few officers who stayed behind to make sure everyone was fine, they showed their badges and were let inside. Once inside, the agents started to do their work. They pulled CCTV, covered bodies to send to the morgue after inspection, and even questioned the people who were calm enough that they could answer some questions. The CCTV was sent to headquarters, but was also inspected by the agents. It showed 20 men rushing in and stopping before holding 1 person at gunpoint and then splitting into 2 groups, one moving towards the lady and the other to the guy with the green hat. Things they noted as they watched were the stillness of the people around them, clearly under some type of hypnosis. They also took notice of the man's face that came into frame but was scribbled out by the camera, but not completely. After some further analysis and trying to piece together a sketch of the blacked-out man, they found it formed a logo of sorts with no origin Shield's database could find.

[In the car]

I was finally leaving my adrenaline rush, instantly realizing the events of the day and everything that was about to happen. I realized what I said to the soldiers over the radio. We shot at cops while escaping, meaning now it was do or die; if we couldn't make it out, we would inevitably be shot down by cops or agents from Shield because they have no doubt taken notice and launched their own mission. At this moment, I could hear the whirring of alarms all across New York, some from the many ambulances heading to the circus, some from the police cars waiting to kill us at a moment's notice, and some agents were mixed in with the cops. I grabbed the radio again from the guard and sent orders.

"From now on, I will not be giving any orders; all orders will come from your leader." Immediately after I said that, the leader gave his own orders, which were just handing the command to the people in each car individually and making the radio silent in case of crucial information being discovered. From now one it was every car for themselves with no backup and self-termination orders. Right now, the car I'm in is heading out of Brooklyn, and we decided to jack a different car so we could be safer.

[Inside the police station]

More and more FBI agents were arriving, making all the people nervous. All officers in the building have left, excluding the old. 911 operators were working at full capacity, answering mundane calls while tracking all the information being greenlit. Robert was also working his best, even in his groggy state; he was in charge of 3 officers, and he would relay information to them while also conveying messages to other operators when need be. The agents would tell 2 operators, one at the front and one at the back, and they would tell the other next to them, and continue the chain until it reached the middle, where it would stop until the next wave. The coordination was astounding; every car's movement was being tracked with CCTV, mundane calls were still being answered as fast as possible, and the network specialists were working like their hands were on fire.

The only agents that stayed in the station were the ones that specialized in managing and other non-combative roles. For the first time in who knows how long, the machine that was the NYPD was actually doing its job as best as it could with maximum effort.

[Chase time]

Even after switching cars, it only bought us a little time before we were discovered again. About a dozen police cars encroached on us as we were heading to the bridge to Manhattan. I am scared was the only thing I could think about; however, my guards were better than I could ever be. When they noticed the cars, they opened the windows, aimed at the tires, and started shooting. Somehow, they managed to hit some, and a few cops were forced to pull off. The other cops also started shooting back, but the guards were more skilled and hit some while also forcing some back. When we made it to the bridge, we could see a small roadblock up ahead, intending to stop us. Instead, we sped up, and my heart was beating harder than it had ever. The car clipped a few cars as we passed, but I could also hear the sound of shots ricocheting off the ground and whizzing above us. We were in Manhattan now.

[Large Scale]

If you were a bystander inside the station at this moment, you could hear the operators increasingly panicking as injuries were reported, as well as the update on situations. After the news on what was happening in New York, more agencies started getting involved. The CIA was moving its operatives to find answers to what the logo could mean, as well as any leads to the group. Police choppers were reporting on locations, news helicopters were circling like sharks and showing all the happenings live, and many citizens were tense as they saw the firefights break out between officers and the subjects. Many drivers were being hit in the crossfire, and somehow, the police had only managed to stop 2 cars, but even then, they had been outmaneuvered, and some had even died. As things kept escalating, SHIELD became more aware and started sending out Quinjets. The government started to take notice, and they prepared an address. This would be the first but not the last incident of this magnitude relating to the mysterious group.

[With Ant]

I was becoming more and more convinced that something horrible was brewing if he managed to escape. His mask made him impossible to be seen, meaning he would be the number 1 priority to catch. They managed to escape the first time, but now that they have done what they did, he was not sure they could escape the next time. I made the call to save my life. I took the radio once more and said for the last time.

"We won't be able to escape pursuit with our current strategy, so from now on, everyone shoots to kill, not incapacitate; it won't matter if we die." I just jumped off the point of no return. I ordered 20 to kill as many as they could to lessen the load temporarily so I could escape and see the light of day once more. I wish my reward from the system would remove the guilt I will feel forever and allow me to be more cold-blooded because I'm not sure I could continue having my past life's ideal being burnt to ash. I took notice of the cops behind me; they had bearcats trailing close, and I could even see a helicopter. I did something that would push me past Point Nemo even more than I have already. I grabbed the hat, put it on, and put the drivers of the vehicles under hypnosis, inevitably leading to a crash and death.
