But before she could come up with a befitting retort, Richard's phone buzzed against the polished table.
He glanced at the screen, and for the first time since they entered the restaurant, his smile faltered.
Shantel caught the flicker in his eyes before he smoothed it over with his usual indifference.
"Who is it?" she asked, sounding more curious than she intended to.
Richard's lips pressed into a thin line. "My grandfather."
She blinked. "Your grandfather? Why aren't you picking then? Is anything the matter?" She asked when it appeared Richard was about to ignore the call.
"No." He swiped the screen and lifted the phone to his ear, tone clipped. "Yes, Grandfather."
Shantel picked up her glass, pretending to sip. She couldn't help but listen.
"Well, Richard? How did the date go with the young lady I arranged for you?"
Richard froze mid-sip. His eyes darted up to Shantel's face who, fortunately for him, had given up on eavesdropping since she couldn't hear anything.
