"Well, let's go to bed quickly. We still have a lot of classes tomorrow, don't we?"
After saying that, Ron quickly turned over and wrapped half of his head with the quilt.
Root shook his head and said nothing more.
Neville and Seamus laughed.
No words were spoken that night.
The next day arrived.
Ron avoided Root.
Root ignored him and went to Professor McGonagall's office after class.
He was a little nervous because he was going to ask Professor McGonagall if he could practice the Transfiguration spell with her. He wasn't sure how she would react to such a request.
He stood at the door for a long time, hesitating, unable to summon the courage to knock.
But the next moment, the door suddenly opened automatically.
"Come in," Professor McGonagall's crisp voice called out.
Root was stunned for a moment, and before his brain could react, his legs had already stepped through the door.
Professor McGonagall was sitting behind a large oak desk, her sharp eyes behind her glasses filled with curiosity.
"Why didn't you knock?"
Root coughed awkwardly and chuckled. "I was just thinking about something and got lost in thought at the door."
Professor McGonagall didn't dwell on it. She nodded slightly and motioned for him to take out his notebook. She then began explaining the details of the Transfiguration spell, answering his questions one by one.
By the end, she was looking at Root with a gentle gaze.
"In fact, your understanding of Transfiguration is already very profound. What I can do now is simply guide you in refining your approach, ensuring you have a strong foundation to shape your magic properly, including secondary shaping."
Root nodded, feeling a surge of determination.
Finally, he mustered up his courage, raised his head, and said in one breath, "Professor McGonagall, since I already have a solid foundation in Transfiguration theory… could I have a Transfiguration duel with you? I'd like to exchange spells with you."
Afraid she might misunderstand, Root quickly added, "I just want to test what I've learned. Of course, I also hope to gain more insights from dueling you."
Professor McGonagall's eyes widened slightly in surprise. The quill in her hand paused mid-air, a flicker of astonishment crossing her face.
However, she did not seem opposed to the idea. It was rare for students to take the initiative in requesting hands-on practice with a professor.
After a brief silence, she smiled approvingly.
"Root, your courage and enterprising spirit are very Gryffindor-like. I'm pleased to see such qualities in you."
With that, she stood up, gracefully walked around the table, and moved to the spacious center of the office. Raising her wand, she said, "Come on, let me see your current strength."
Root's heart pounded with excitement. He quickly stood up.
Professor McGonagall stood there calmly, watching him quietly.
Root knew she was allowing him to make the first move.
He took a deep breath, but instead of casting a Transfiguration spell directly at her, he focused on the paperweight on her desk.
He waved his wand and shouted clearly, "Transfiguration Shift!"
A pink light shot out from the wand's tip and instantly struck the paperweight.
In a blink, the paperweight transformed into an agile squirrel, which swung its big, fluffy tail and leaped toward Professor McGonagall.
"Squeak!"
Root wanted to test Transfiguration on different objects before directly challenging Professor McGonagall, hoping to refine his techniques.
Yet, despite waiting, he didn't receive any system notification of completing his refinement task.
"Squirrels can't hurt anyone," Professor McGonagall remarked calmly.
A hint of approval flashed in her eyes. Then, she waved her wand and cast, "Form Reconstruction!"
A soft green light enveloped the squirrel. In an instant, the small creature was reshaped into an exquisite crystal brooch, shimmering with refracted light as it landed in Professor McGonagall's palm.
Root paused.
Unlike offensive spells that created dramatic explosions, Transfiguration duels required precision and control.
For Professor McGonagall to transform an object he had already changed meant that her magic had completely overpowered his.
This small detail alone proved her mastery of Transfiguration was far superior to his.
Root dared not let his guard down. He eyed an umbrella in the corner, then waved his wand.
"Property Transformation!"
The umbrella rustled, morphing into a cobra with raised fangs and a flicking tongue. Its triangular head loomed as it slithered rapidly toward Professor McGonagall, hissing menacingly.
"Good," Professor McGonagall remarked, smiling softly. "Choosing objects with similar forms increases the success rate and improves the transformation effect."
She turned slightly and elegantly traced an arc in the air with her wand.
"Reverse Incantation!"
A silver-white light streaked across the room like a sharp blade.
As the magic wrapped around the cobra, it instantly reverted back into an umbrella.
With a soft "pop," the umbrella clattered to the ground, its metal ribs making a crisp sound.
Root narrowed his eyes. The timing was right.
He raised his wand and warned, "Be careful, Professor McGonagall!"
With all his might, he cast, "Vera Verto!"
A surge of pink magical light shot out, roaring through the air toward Professor McGonagall.
"Use all your strength," she advised with a chuckle. "But remember, shouting won't make a spell stronger."
Holding her wand horizontally before her, she countered, "Vera Verto!"
The light from her wand was denser and more concentrated than Root's. It resembled a coiled dragon, ready to strike, as it surged toward his pink beam.
The two beams of magic collided mid-air, filling the office with dazzling flashes.
Powerful magical waves rippled outward like shockwaves.
Professor McGonagall stood her ground, unmoving, but Root struggled under the force of her magic, staggering backward.
He gritted his teeth, trying to pour more power into his spell.
But the next moment…
Professor McGonagall's magic completely overwhelmed his.
And suddenly—
A round, pink, plump pig appeared.
"Huh?!"
