Thomas Fisher locked the door and returned to bed. He immediately picked up the phone on his pillow, but Alice Turner was nowhere to be seen. The video chat was still on, yet she was missing.
"Alice! Alice! Alice!"
Facing the phone, Thomas called out Alice's name three times, each time louder than the last.
At that moment, Alice was lying on the sofa, lost in thought. Hearing Thomas calling her, she quickly snapped out of her reverie and grabbed the phone next to her head, "Finished with your stuff?"
She had been thinking about her own things and hadn't listened to the conversation between the mother and son on the other end. She had no idea what had just happened.
"My mom was looking for me just now. She asked who I was talking to." Thomas hadn't bothered to shield Alice from the conversation earlier and had casually left the phone on his pillow. He didn't know what she might have overheard or how much she knew.
