Having been delayed at home, he was two minutes late when he got to the training ground, and to punish himself for this tardiness, he decided to run ten kilometers with weights.
This punishment was twice as harsh as what soldiers would receive. He wasn't doing this for show; it was his principle in how he conducted himself and his rules for military discipline.

Easton was exceptionally strict with himself usually, never enjoying privileges just because he was a leader, and he always arrived at the training ground before the soldiers gathered each morning.
