We ran after Xavier as he rushed through the path that led to where the house was burning. As we got closer, loud cries filled the air. The heat in the atmosphere wrapped around us like a warning. It came too fast, too strong.
When we finally reached the building in flames, I couldn't tell whose house it was at first. There were too many people gathered outside, their faces wet with tears, their voices broken with pain. I turned to ask Xavier if he knew the owner of the house, but the look on his face froze me. His eyes were wide, his skin pale, and he stood completely still, staring at the burning home like the world had just ended.
My heart dropped. Could this really be his house? No, it couldn't be. I looked around for someone to ask, but no one was saying anything. Everyone was crying. Panic rose in my chest and I turned to Marissa. She was already in tears. I shook my head, confused and afraid, and she slowly pointed at Xavier.
It was his home.
