There was silence in the room. Marissa would not say why she came, and the king was not ready to let the matter go until she spoke. I was completely confused because I had no idea what she came to tell me either. But something about the silence made it clear—this was a private matter. Could it be about Queen Fortuna again? That woman always managed to bring trouble. She never failed at that.
"What is going on?" the king asked again, his brows pulled together. He was starting to get impatient, and I feared he might scare Marissa into saying something she shouldn't. I stepped forward to help her.
"Have you prepared my meal?" I asked, throwing her a quick wink.
Marissa caught on fast and nodded. "Y-Yes, my lady. I came as soon as I could," she said, doing her best to play along.
