Chapter 8 - ...

The morning light filtered through the window, casting a warm glow across the room. Ash had barely slept, his mind buzzing with the conversation from the night before. The weight of their heritage, the hidden power within them, and the enemies that were closing in… It was all too much to process in one night. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized that there was no turning back now.

The world was on the edge of destruction, and somehow, he and Kael were at the center of it all. He couldn't afford to hesitate. They had to move forward—uncover the truth of their lineage and prepare for whatever lay ahead.

Kael's voice broke him from his thoughts. "Ash, you awake? I'm starving."

Ash turned to find his brother sitting up in bed, running a hand through his disheveled hair. Kael always had a way of being carefree, even in the most chaotic situations. It was both a blessing and a curse.

"Yeah, I'm up," Ash replied, standing and stretching. "But before we get breakfast, we need to figure out what our next step is."

Kael raised an eyebrow, clearly more focused on food than strategy. "You're thinking too hard, man. The academy's got everything we need. We'll train, get stronger, and deal with whatever's coming."

Ash frowned but didn't argue. He knew his brother's way of thinking—it was simple, direct, and often reckless. But sometimes, he wished Kael would take things more seriously.

"The academy's just the beginning," Ash said, his voice firm. "We're here to learn, yes, but there's more at play. The shrines, the artifacts… Selene mentioned we need to embrace both sides of our bloodlines. We're not just fighting aliens. There are other godly beings, and some of them are just as dangerous, if not more so. We need to be prepared for anything."

Kael sighed, his earlier energy dampened by Ash's words. He stood up and walked toward the door, his wings folding neatly behind him. "Alright, alright. But I'm telling you, I'm not going to spend all my time in some dusty library or meditating like some monk. Let's focus on the real fight."

Ash shook his head but followed Kael out of the room. "We can't ignore the knowledge we need. The more we know, the better our chances. And maybe we'll get lucky and find some of those artifacts Selene mentioned along the way."

The two of them made their way down the hall, joining the other students heading toward the academy's dining hall. The building was massive, with high ceilings and intricate stonework that seemed to pulse with magic. As they entered the dining area, the scent of fresh bread and sizzling meat filled the air. Despite their earlier exhaustion, both brothers felt their stomachs growl in anticipation.

They found an empty table and sat down, beginning to pile their plates with food. Ash's mind, however, was still preoccupied. As they ate, he glanced around at the other students—some were engaged in animated conversations, others sat quietly, focusing on their food or training. He couldn't shake the feeling that something more was brewing beneath the surface.

"We should talk to Selene again," Ash said, his tone serious as he looked at his brother. "She knows more than she's letting on. I'm starting to think there's something else going on at this academy. Something we're not being told."

Kael raised an eyebrow, taking a bite of his food. "You think so? She seemed pretty straightforward to me."

"It's not just her," Ash replied, his voice lowering. "The way some of the students look at us… it's like they know something we don't. And the instructors here—they're all too calm. Like they've been waiting for us."

Kael shrugged, clearly more interested in the food than the mystery. "Maybe they just want to see what we can do. Who wouldn't want to see the hybrid gods in action?"

Ash didn't respond immediately. He wasn't so sure. There was something unsettling about it all. They were being watched, studied, even. And the more he thought about it, the more he realized that this wasn't just a school—it was a battlefield.

As they finished their meal, the bell rang, signaling the beginning of the day's training. The brothers stood up, walking toward the courtyard where the rest of the students had already gathered.

But before they could join the others, a familiar voice called out from behind them.

"Ash! Kael!"

It was Selene, walking quickly toward them. She looked more serious than usual, her face lined with concern.

"There's something you need to know," she said, glancing over her shoulder as if checking to see if anyone was listening. "The academy isn't just here to train you. They're watching you. All of you."

Ash and Kael exchanged a glance, both of them feeling a rising sense of unease.

"What do you mean?" Kael asked, his voice low.

"There's a council of high-ranking individuals who oversee everything that happens here," Selene explained, her tone urgent. "They've been watching you two closely. They know who you are, what you're capable of. And they want you for their own purposes."

Ash's heart skipped a beat. "Why? What do they want with us?"

Selene hesitated, clearly uncomfortable. "I don't know all the details, but… I've heard rumors. They want to control your powers. If you let them, they'll shape you into weapons, tools for their war against the aliens and other threats. But if you don't play along, they'll make things difficult for you."

Kael frowned. "Sounds like we're in the middle of some big power struggle."

"That's because you are," Selene said grimly. "This isn't just about aliens invading. This is a war for control of the power you carry. Your bloodline is a key, and everyone wants a piece of it. But not all of them are as trustworthy as they seem."

Ash's mind raced. He had known things weren't as simple as they appeared, but this… This was something else.

"So, what should we do?" Ash asked, his voice steady despite the storm of thoughts swirling in his mind.

Selene looked between them, her eyes determined. "Keep your guard up. Trust only those who've earned it. And don't let them control you. You're the only ones who can unlock the full potential of your bloodlines. If you let them shape you, they'll destroy you."

With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Ash and Kael to absorb the weight of her words.

Kael let out a slow breath, his expression darkening. "Looks like we've got more enemies to deal with than we thought."

Ash nodded, his eyes narrowing. "It's not just the aliens anymore. We're caught in something much bigger. And we're going to need all the help we can get."

As the twins headed toward the training area, their minds were sharp and focused. The academy was no longer just a place for learning. It was a battleground—one where they would need to fight for their freedom, their power, and the future of the world itself.

And they wouldn't back down.
