Chapter 153 - Chapter 153: Proof of a Doctor

Chopper remained on the balcony long after the moon had risen high above the snowy peaks of Drum Island. The cold no longer bit at his fur. It simply reminded him he was alive, and perhaps, still capable of choosing his path. He stared out into the vast silence, snow blanketing every inch of the landscape like a new beginning waiting to be written. He thought of Hiriluk's final words—not the grand explosion, but the quiet ones whispered during one of their walks in the woods.

"Even if the world says you're wrong, if you help someone, that's enough."

His breath hung in the air, crystallizing into mist before vanishing like doubt. The stars shimmered in the distance, and he whispered to them, "Maybe it's time."

Turning from the balcony, he walked with purpose, his hooves steady, echoing down the stone corridors of Drum Castle. With every step, fear thawed inside him, replaced by a steady warmth in his chest—a quiet certainty that had been buried deep but never extinguished. He passed tapestries and half-frozen lanterns, the history of Drum Island etched into every stone he moved beyond. Each step felt like he was leaving behind the shell of who he used to be.

Kureha was at the lab counter, preparing a final dose of medicine for Nami. Her hands moved methodically, crushing dried herbs and mixing tinctures with the ease of someone who'd done this for decades. The soft clinks of glass and rustle of leaves filled the room like an old familiar lullaby. She didn't look up when the door creaked open.

"So you've made up your mind?" she asked, her voice calm and without surprise.

Chopper didn't answer immediately. He walked up beside her and silently reached for the tools—the glass rod, the ceramic bowl, the measures of powdered bark and feverleaf. His hooves were careful but confident, the motions learned through years at Hiriluk's side, now second nature like the rhythm of his heartbeat.

Kureha paused mid-motion. She stepped back, arms folding across her chest as she watched him work. His brow furrowed with concentration, and the room fell silent save for the soft grinding of herbs.

He measured the dosage precisely, stirred with a practiced wrist, and added just enough heat from the small flame to activate the ingredients. The scent of the mixture—bitter and earthy—filled the room. The glass fogged from the warmth of the blend, and Chopper lifted it slowly, peering through the clarity like it was a reflection of himself.

"I see," she said finally. "Then prove it—to me, and to yourself."

Chopper nodded. "I'm ready."

He completed the mixture, poured it into a small flask, and sealed it with a precise motion. Then he carried it gently toward Nami's bedside. He knelt beside her, checked her pulse, placed a hoof gently on her forehead, and observed her breathing—the slow, steady kind that only came with recovery.

She stirred slightly, murmuring in her sleep. Chopper's eyes softened. The tightness in his chest loosened.

"She's going to be okay," he whispered to himself.

A faint smile crossed his face—not the forced kind he used to hide behind, but a real one. He placed the flask down beside her pillow like a symbol of hope, then stood, shoulders straighter than before.

Outside the castle gates, the snow had lightened to a soft flurry. The wind danced gently through the trees, stirring the branches like an audience holding its breath. As if nature itself awaited a decision. The Going Merry floated gently at anchor in the distance, its mast swaying slowly with the breeze.

Sanji stood near the base of the hill, hands in his pockets, scarf fluttering in the wind.

"He's not coming, is he?" Sanji muttered, glancing toward the towering castle.

"He'll come," Luffy replied with unwavering certainty, his straw hat tilted up just enough for the moonlight to reflect off his grin. He stood tall, arms crossed, as though he already knew the outcome.

Robin, her voice steady and eyes half-lidded, leaned against a tree with her coat wrapped around her, and added softly, "Belief is a powerful thing. Sometimes stronger than proof."

The snow crunched softly as the group shifted in silence.

Then, a distant crack echoed from above.

They turned their heads upward.

Snow exploded from the top ledge of the castle as a silhouette launched into the air—a small reindeer with a blue hat and a fierce expression, soaring against the moonlight backdrop. The scene unfolded in slow motion, wind rippling through his fur, eyes focused and determined. His cape fluttered behind him like a banner of his resolve.

He landed in the snow with a soft thud, sending up a small cloud of powder around his hooves. He stood tall, medicine bag slung across his shoulder, antlers catching the moonlight like a crown.

Everyone froze.

Sanji blinked. Robin raised an eyebrow with quiet approval. Even Luffy's grin widened slightly, as if this moment confirmed everything he already believed.

Chopper stared forward, chest rising with heavy breaths, heart hammering in his ears. His hooves trembled slightly, but he didn't waver.

He had made his choice.

But before he could speak—a sudden voice rang out from above.

To be continued...
