Chapter 158 - Thanatos Hunts

Back in Raccoon City.

At that moment, Allen, Leon, Kevin, Ada, Rachel, and Katherine were still trapped inside the stadium. Hundreds of zombies had completely surrounded the area, pouring in from every direction near the exits. Their guttural moans echoed endlessly through the concrete structure, mixing with the sound of shuffling feet and scraping claws.

Fortunately, the group had managed to reach a higher platform inside the stadium, high enough that the zombies couldn't reach them—at least for now. Arms stretched upward uselessly as decaying bodies piled against the barriers below.

"Damn it… looks like we're stuck here," Kevin muttered, gasping for breath after running nonstop. His eyes locked onto the sealed exit door just a short distance away. "We were so close to getting out."

Their situation was getting worse by the second. Ammunition was running low, magazines nearly empty, and the infected showed no sign of slowing down. More kept coming, drawn by noise and movement.

Katherine clung tightly to Allen, her hands trembling as she buried her face against his chest, terrified by the sight below. Allen steadied her with one arm while keeping his weapon trained forward, his expression calm but focused.

Then—suddenly—

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The exit door burst open as gunfire rang out. Two men stormed in, rifles blazing. The first was Mikhail, his movements sharp and disciplined. Beside him was Carlos, firing with practiced precision.

Bullets tore through the approaching zombies, dropping them one by one and forcing the horde back.

"Hey!" Carlos shouted over the gunfire. "We'll hold them off—move now! Get out of here!"

Allen didn't hesitate. "Move!" he ordered.

The group sprinted toward the exit, firing at any zombie that got too close while Mikhail and Carlos continued to suppress the horde. Shell casings clattered across the floor as the smell of gunpowder filled the air.

One by one, they made it through the exit.

Once safely outside, everyone stopped, catching their breath.

"Thank you," Leon said sincerely.

"No need," Carlos replied, lowering his rifle. "This is our job."

Soon after, the stadium was completely sealed off with heavy barriers. No one was getting in—or out—anymore. The moans from inside faded as the area was quarantined.

Kevin let out a tired laugh and clapped Allen on the shoulder.

"Hey, Allen, after saving your ass like that, you better treat us to a drink once this nightmare is over."

Leon nodded in agreement. "Yeah. You owe us."

Allen chuckled softly. "Alright, alright."

He then turned toward the girls. His priority was clear—get them somewhere safe.

"Let's go back to the apartment and rest. After that, we'll get you out of the city."

They nodded without hesitation.

But just before Allen could leave, Mikhail stopped him.

"Are you the one named Allen?"

Allen turned back. "Yeah. Do you need something?"

Mikhail nodded, his expression serious.

"I heard you can create a vaccine for this disease. Some of my team members were injured while rescuing infected civilians. If what I heard is true… I'm asking for your help."

Allen thought for a moment, then nodded calmly.

"Alright. Wait here. Once I get back home, I'll send the vaccines over. My people will deliver them."

As he spoke, Allen was already considering sending members of Black Rose. They had been restless ever since the outbreak began—eager to finally be unleashed against the undead.

.....

Meanwhile, at the University, the Tyrant Thanatos finally emerged from its containment tube. The thick glass shattered outward as the massive creature stepped forward, its towering form steaming as residual chemicals evaporated from its skin. When the Tyrant's crimson eyes locked onto the members of Echo Six, its gaze sharpened with pure predatory intent.

Sensing immediate danger, Sienna and Caroline raised their weapons, aiming straight at the Tyrant's chest, fingers tense on the trigger.

"Professor…" Jettingham muttered nervously, cold sweat running down his face as he instinctively took a step back.

Before panic could spiral out of control, Müller quickly issued a command through his computer console.

"Don't worry. Lower your weapons," he said firmly. "It won't attack you."

The Tyrant paused mid-step. Its muscles twitched, claws flexing slightly—then it ceased all aggressive movement. Having received new orders, Thanatos slowly turned away from Echo Six. With heavy, deliberate footsteps, it began walking past them, as if preparing to greet the Umbrella troops that would soon arrive to retrieve it.

Elsewhere within the University grounds, Nicolai moved through the shadows, accompanied by thirty of his men. He already knew that the professor possessed a Tyrant Umbrella desperately wanted. True to his nature, Nicolai kept himself hidden at the rear, letting his subordinates move ahead as expendable bait to flush out Dr. Müller.

From an elevated position, Nicolai assembled a specialized sniper rifle, its barrel modified specifically for biological sampling. His objective was clear: obtain a blood sample from the Tyrant at any cost.

At the same time, Echo Six took up concealed positions, observing everything from a safe distance. Cameras were activated, recording every movement of the Tyrant and Umbrella's forces—this surveillance was carried out at Dr. Müller's direct request.

The atmosphere inside the University grew heavier by the second. Multiple factions converged in the same location, each with their own agenda.

The team continued advancing down the corridor leading to the area where Dr. Muller was located. With every step they took deeper into the facility, the atmosphere grew heavier—until suddenly, they were greeted by something far worse than they had anticipated.

Standing before them was a Tyrant Thanatos

It towered at nearly twelve feet tall—around 3.66 meters—its massive frame blocking the corridor entirely. The creature stared at them in complete silence, its cold, inhuman eyes locked onto the Umbrella soldiers. One by one, the men swallowed hard. Fear crept in instantly, especially as they took in its grotesque appearance: its heart grotesquely exposed and pulsating outside its chest, veins twitching violently, while both of its arms ended in long, razor-sharp claws capable of tearing through steel as if it were paper.

None of them moved.

Meanwhile, Nikolai had already positioned himself in a secure vantage point far behind the team. Unlike the others, he showed no fear. To him, they were expendable. He adjusted his rifle calmly, his voice crackling through the radio.

"What are you waiting for?" Nikolai barked. "Fire! Shoot it!"

The order was given.

Moments later—

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Gunfire echoed violently through the corridor. Bullets slammed into the Tyrant's body, tearing into its flesh—but instead of falling, the creature let out a deep, enraged growl. Its muscles tensed, its heartbeat visibly accelerating as the exposed organ throbbed harder.

The Tyrant was furious.

With terrifying speed, it charged.

Slash!

One soldier was cut down instantly, his body ripped apart by a single swing of the Tyrant's claws.

Slash!

Another was lifted off the ground, screaming as steel and bone were torn apart like paper.

"AHHH—! HELP! SOMEBODY HELP ME—!"

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Desperate gunfire filled the corridor, bullets spraying wildly as panic set in. Soldiers screamed, tripped over fallen bodies, and desperately tried to retreat—but there was nowhere to run. The Tyrant advanced relentlessly, each step echoing like a death sentence.

Blood splattered across the walls. Armor was shredded. One by one, Nikolai's men were butchered without mercy.

From his safe position, Nikolai watched in silence, unmoved. His eyes narrowed as he observed the Tyrant's movements, waiting patiently for the perfect moment.

Good… he thought. Kill them all. Just give me my opening.

As the screams echoed through the corridor, Nikolai slowly raised his specialized sniper rifle, preparing to take his shot—not to save anyone, but to claim what Umbrella truly wanted: a living sample of the Thanatos's blood.

After Nicolai felt he finally had the opening he'd been waiting for, he took the shot.

Bang!

His sniper rifle roared, firing a specially modified round—one designed to deploy a containment capsule capable of extracting blood directly from the Tyrant's body. The projectile tore through the air at extreme speed, fast enough to punch through reinforced armor.

But before it could reach its target, something went horribly wrong.

Almost as if it sensed the incoming threat, Thanatos reacted.

In a blur of motion, the Tyrant raised one massive claw and caught the extractor round midair.

Metal screeched violently as the creature clenched its fist, crushing the capsule into twisted shards of steel and shattered glass. Blood samples splattered uselessly across the floor.

Then—slowly—the Tyrant lifted its head.

Its eyes locked onto Nicolai's position.

"The fuck…" Nicolai muttered, his spine going cold.

That look wasn't empty rage.

It was awareness.

For the first time since the operation began, Nicolai felt genuine fear crawling up his back. He knew it instantly—he hadn't just failed the mission.

He had angered the monster.

"Just shoot it! Keep firing!" Nicolai barked into the radio, already backing away. "Unload everything you've got!"

Gunfire erupted again as Umbrella's soldiers desperately opened fire, bullets hammering into Thanatos's flesh. But the Tyrant barely slowed.

With a deafening roar, Thanatos surged forward.

Steel claws slashed through armor and bone alike. One soldier was torn in half before he could even scream. Another was lifted off the ground and hurled into the wall with enough force to cave his chest inward. The hallway filled with blood, screams, and the sickening crunch of breaking bodies.

Thanatos moved with terrifying speed—far faster than any standard Tyrant model.

Seeing his men being slaughtered like insects, Nicolai turned and ran.

"Shit… shit… shit!" he cursed, sprinting through the corridor, his breath ragged as panic finally took hold.

Behind him, the heavy footsteps of the Tyrant thundered closer.

Thanatos was no longer defending itself.

It was hunting.

And the cat-and-mouse game between Thanatos and Nikolai began.

...

Meanwhile, back at the apartment, Allen was busy helping Rebecca produce vaccines for the city's remaining civilians. The room was filled with the sterile scent of chemicals and alcohol, vials neatly arranged under dim emergency lighting. As he carefully worked, his phone vibrated—an incoming message from Sienna.

After reading it, Allen couldn't help but smile, especially when he reached the part mentioning Nicolai being relentlessly hunted by Thanatos.

"Well… that guy definitely deserves it," Allen muttered with a faint chuckle as he continued synthesizing the antiviral compounds, his hands steady and precise.

Rebecca glanced at him from across the table, noticing the unusual expression on his face. "Allen, you look oddly cheerful. Did something good happen?" she asked while checking the integrity of another vial.

"You could say that," Allen replied casually. "I just got a message from Sienna. Dr. Muller finally completed his Tyrant—Thanatos. And right now, that thing is tearing through Umbrella personnel."

He carefully placed several completed antivirus doses into a reinforced container. "Seems Thanatos is actively hunting them."

Rebecca frowned slightly at the news. No matter how she looked at it, Dr. Muller was still a man who created bioweapons—monsters meant only for destruction. Even if Umbrella was suffering the consequences, it didn't sit right with her.

Still, she said nothing. Sienna was operating under direct government orders, and the situation was far more complicated than black and white.

"Hey… why do you look upset?" Allen asked gently, noticing the change in her expression.

Rebecca shook her head slowly. "I don't want to talk about it. This whole situation is… complicated," she said quietly.

Allen studied her for a moment, then nodded in understanding. He sealed the vaccine container and secured it tightly. "Alright. I won't push it."

He lifted the box, preparing to hand it over to Vector later so it could be delivered to Mikhail's unit.

"I'm heading out for a bit, I want to hand this vaccine over to Vector and say goodbye to the girls who are leaving first." Allen said, leaning in and softly kissing Rebecca on the cheek.

She smiled faintly. "Okay. Don't take too long, okay?".

As Allen stepped toward the door, the distant echo of sirens and sporadic gunfire reminded them both that Raccoon City was still far from safe—and that monsters, both human and inhuman, were still roaming freely in the darkness.
