As the sun roared above the horizon, I stood by the kitchen window, cradling a cup of steaming coffee between my palms.
It was hard to believe that just hours ago, the earth itself had trembled under our feet, the after shocks were still coming in some intervals, fortunately our base was sturdy enough to withstand theses blows compare to last night nightmare.
I took a slow sip, letting the bitter warmth settle the lingering unease in my chest.
Behind me, soft footsteps padded across the floor. Turning slightly, I saw my mother, her hair still messy from sleep, coming toward me with a tired but gentle smile.
"How's Ashley?" she asked softly.
"Sleeping," I replied, glancing toward the bedroom where she lay curled up under the thick blankets. "She was so brave last night."
My mother nodded, pride flashing briefly in her weary eyes. "She gets that from you."
I chuckled quietly, though my heart felt heavy. Brave or not, no child should have to go through nights like that.
