Chapter 8 - Walk

6:08 p.m., same day.

After taking a bath for the second time, Donovan exited the bathroom in a fresh set of clothes. He wore a white t-shirt with a small umbrella design on the upper left, and gray shorts. He then got the chef robot to make him dinner.

8:16 p.m.

Donovan was sitting on the sofa, watching a horror movie. From time to time, he'd go to the toilet to relieve himself. This was because he just finished working out earlier and drank five cups of water.

At 9:31 p.m., he turned the lights off and finally went to bed.

Tomorrow's Sunday, and the day after that, I'll finally be fighting Annihiliths… Let's just hope I still have the original Donovan's muscle memory and skills… Well, although I know how to fight because of the original Donovan's memories, I'm still not quite confident…

In his previous life as Leon Valentin, he had never gotten into a fight even once. He had zero experience in fighting. But after being transmigrated into the body of someone who knew how to fight, he still had no confidence despite all those memories of "him" fighting.

Ah, but I was able to cast one of my spells, Barrier, pretty easily when I was protecting Benedict and the others… The battle knowledge is still there, I guess…

Donovan shook his head, snapping himself out from his thoughts. With a yawn, he closed his eyes.

What should I do tomorrow…?

The next morning, at 5:51 a.m. It was now Sunday, 19th of January, 2118.

Donovan slowly woke up. He sat up, rubbed his eyes, and stretched his back. Getting out of bed, he stretched his entire body.

He walked towards the kitchen, pressing a small button on the wall. Beside the button were the words: Chef.

After the chef robot began making him breakfast, Donovan went to the toilet to relieve himself.

After exiting the bathroom, he said, "Iris, play 'Laputa' by Panchiko."

Suddenly, he heard a feminine, ethereal voice coming from a location he couldn't determine. The voice said, "Sorry, I'm unable to find a song called 'Laputa' by Panchiko."

Donovan sighed. While he was relieving himself in the toilet, he recalled that he had an AI assistant in his apartment called "Iris." In fact, everyone had an AI assistant.

He tried again, saying, "Play 'Clair de Lune' by Claude Debussy instead." Upon saying this, he secretly hoped that this song still exists in this alternate universe he was in.

The voice belonging to the AI assistant called Iris suddenly said, "I was able to find a solo piano piece called 'Clair de Lune,' but it was composed by a different person named C. Duvernay. Would you still like me to play this piece?"

Duvernay…? Wait a minute, is this the alternate universe version of Clair Debussy? So the reason I wasn't able to find movies, actors, and celebrities that belonged to my original world, was because they all had different names? No wonder…

Wait… If this is indeed an alternate universe, is there… a Leon Valentin somewhere, but with a different name…? No, no way, that's not possible. It's 2118 here, and the Leon Valentin of this universe is probably already six feet under… But is there really an alternate universe version of Leon Valentin? Why am I even thinking about this?

After a moment, Donovan said with a sigh, "Yes."

After that, Donovan heard the gentle, ethereal, and soft melody of one of his favorite classical piano compositions in his previous life as Leon Valentin. But it was slightly altered, with bits and parts he hadn't heard before, but it still sounded alright to him.

Walking towards the kitchen, he saw that the chef robot was almost done. It was making pancakes. Simple but delicious.

After about 22 minutes, the chef robot finished making him breakfast. It then put the plate of pancakes on the table, and poured syrup on it.

After having breakfast and washing the dishes, Donovan sat on the sofa.

What should I do for today…?

He looked at the desk where his PC was on top.

Play video games…? Maybe later, since it's still early in the morning. Or… I could go out and take a walk to better freshen up my memories of this place.

Donovan got out of the sofa. He decided to take a walk.

Entering his bathroom, he took a bath.

About 19 minutes later, he was wearing a red crew neck sweater. On top of it was a black suit.

In this futuristic, floating city called Umbrellas, as it was January, it was still quite cold. Although it wasn't a planet, technology has advanced too much to the point that a floating city out in space can replicate temperatures on Earth.

The music being played by the AI assistant Iris came to a halt. Donovan first made sure to lock everything before exiting his apartment. He pressed his thumb on the thumb-scanner beside the doorknob, locking the door.

Exiting the apartment building, Donovan once again saw the fabulous, breath-taking sight of the city.

After walking for a while, Donovan passed by the park where he boarded the spacecraft with Rosalind and her bodyguard, Jacob. He kept walking, and through the memories of the original Donovan, he was now facing the library.

The library looked like it didn't belong to this city, as it was a completely different look from the futuristic buildings beside it. Its exterior looked like it came from the 1800s.

Donovan entered the library, and was met with an even more breath-taking sight than the technology-filled city. Just like from outside, the interior also looked like something straight from the Victorian era.

Uh, did an error happen?

He walked to the bookshelves, checking out books that interested him. From time to time, he'd take out a book from the bookshelves and stand there on the spot while reading it for a good ten minutes.

After a few minutes, he finally found a book that interested him. It was a novel about transmigration, much similar to his current situation. It was titled, Transmigration: A Ritual of Stars.

After an hour of reading, Donovan leaned back on his chair and sighed. As he was a relatively fast reader, he had already read a good amount of chapters. Each chapter was about six thousand words long.

This is pretty good… Heh, I'm surprised that books still exist in a time where advanced technology is everything and everywhere. Donovan turned his head to the side, looking at the outside through the large, floor to ceiling window.

Flying cars and all sorts of vehicles could be seen soaring through the air. From time to time, a train with no visible railways could be seen passing by.

Upon seeing this scene, Donovan was once again hit by the absurdity of his current situation. Although it's only been a day since his transmigration, he was already starting to miss his friends and family from his previous life as Leon Valentin.

I'm now starting to understand the protagonist of this novel I'm reading, as well as the protagonists of all those transmigration novels I've read…

Donovan looked at his watch on his left hand, checking the time. He had five expensive watches in his collection, with his most expensive one being given as a gift to Benedict.

It was currently 8:35 a.m.

I shouldn't have worn my most expensive watch to Benedict's wedding… Donovan stood up, walking towards the self-checkout kiosk with the novel he was reading.

Taking out his wallet, he took out his library card, scanned it as well as the book's barcode, and walked away. He wanted to borrow the book for a week so he could read it at home because he was already deeply interested in the story.

With the book in his right hand, Donovan exited the library. His plan now was either to go to a café, cinema, aquarium, or the arcade. Ultimately, he chose the café.

Donovan racked his brain, trying to recall where the nearest cafés were. He then began walking. After about eleven minutes, he reached a café. It was called, "Eclipse Espresso, Now With Cats!"

A cat café… I've always wanted to go to one…

He entered the café, and was immediately hit with the smell of coffee, food, and cats. The inside was cozy and warm, making one feel as though they were in a mother's embrace. Cats of all kinds were either cleaning themselves, sleeping, scratching, climbing, or cuddling with fellow cats.

He was the only customer here. Approaching the counter, he asked, "Could I get a cup of cappuccino?"

The barista behind the counter was a beautiful, fairly young lady. She had blonde, yellow hair, and beautiful brown eyes. She was wearing a white button-up shirt with a brown apron with the café's logo on the upper left.

"Sure! Will that be all?" asked the barista in a gentle tone of voice.

Donovan looked down, and saw her name tag.

Eva White…

"Can I pet the cats?" asked Donovan.

"Yes, go ahead! But here are the rules: Let the cats come to you, don't feed them, be gentle, and lastly, don't wake them up if they're sleeping," said Eva.

Donovan nodded. "Alright."

After that, he sat on a chair, putting the book he borrowed from the library on the table. He patiently waited for his cup of cappuccino.
