Steve Rogers walked into the bar, cautiously surveying his surroundings. The security personnel immediately stood out to him. Almost all of them were clearly well trained, and they were equipped with solid weapons.
That made him uneasy.
He didn't understand why Noah, a wizard, would choose a place like this to meet.
"Or is this just a trap?"
Rogers continued deeper inside as the noisy music hammered against his eardrums.
Then, suddenly, a voice appeared in his mind.
Clear. Familiar.
It sounded exactly like the voice in his earpiece.
It was Noah.
Rogers recognized it instantly. In his perception, only Noah could do something like this. The voice wasn't entering through his ears at all. It was resonating directly inside his brain.
"Is this… guiding me?"
Rogers frowned, then decided not to resist it. He followed the guidance toward the location Noah had mentioned.
As he passed through the dance floor, Rogers sharply caught the sound of gunfire. His instincts told him to go check it out.
But after a brief hesitation, he chose not to.
A bar like this, paired with that level of security, made one thing clear. The owner's background was anything but simple. Possibly even a former villain who had gone legitimate.
Looking for trouble here wasn't smart.
Moving forward, Rogers soon reached a much quieter area. This was the booth section. In the center stood a small stage, where a young woman was singing with emotion.
Rogers had no interest in it.
Frankly, he didn't understand modern music. Or maybe he just couldn't adapt to it.
After a quick scan, he spotted Noah and Fury sitting in a corner, drinking alcohol and other beverages.
"Your spot was hard to find," Rogers said as he walked over. After a moment's thought, he sat down directly, picked up a beer, and took a sip.
"Don't pretend," Noah said, looking at him and spreading his hands slightly. He lowered his voice. "No one else can hear what we're saying."
Rogers nearly spat out the beer.
He forced it down, wiped his mouth, and looked at Noah. "Alright. Then why pick this godforsaken place?"
"Because someone came here to deal with the owner's personal grudges," Noah replied calmly. "So we came here to meet."
Rogers nodded.
That explained the gunshots. It also confirmed his suspicion that the bar owner wasn't a good person. He didn't know who Noah was helping, but if Noah was involved, it meant the person probably wasn't bad.
In Rogers' eyes, Noah was a wizard with very firm principles.
"No wonder I heard gunfire earlier," Rogers said after thinking for a moment. Then his expression turned serious. "You left me a message saying that all of S.H.I.E.L.D. is—"
"Fury should explain that better," Noah interrupted directly. He glanced to the side. "You know, if you hadn't moved, and if I didn't know, I really might not have noticed there was someone else sitting here."
Fury shot Noah a dark look.
Then he gathered his thoughts and began recounting everything he had experienced and discovered.
As Fury spoke, Rogers' expression grew heavier. He fell into silence, clearly shaken by the situation with Hydra.
After listening through the earpiece earlier, Rogers had already realized the problem was severe. But hearing it directly from Fury made him understand something worse.
He had underestimated it.
Even after estimating high, Hydra's infiltration into S.H.I.E.L.D. was deeper than he imagined.
Noah didn't take part in the intelligence exchange.
He propped his chin up and scanned the surroundings, searching for the person who had been tracking them earlier.
Soon, he noticed a man wearing a hat who kept glancing in their direction.
Noah's eyes narrowed.
After observing him carefully, Noah immediately recognized who it was.
Bucky.
It seemed Fury really was experienced. He had known Hydra wouldn't let him go. And now, it was obvious. Fury's every move was under Hydra's watch.
No wonder he had chosen to fake his death before. He understood Hydra far too well.
But things were different now.
With Noah around, Fury no longer needed to do that.
Noah shook his head as he watched Bucky slowly approach. He could tell Bucky was preparing to act. More than that, Noah sensed something else.
An emotion.
Suppressed. Agitated.
Especially when Bucky looked at Steve.
"Could it be the original Bucky?"
Noah stroked his chin and quickly reached a plausible conclusion.
The Winter Soldier's brainwashing had always been crude. Fragile. It relied on forcibly implanting a new ideology through specific trigger phrases, reinforced by drugs. The goal was to create fearless, pain-immune soldiers.
In essence, a distorted variant of a super-soldier.
The requirements were far harsher than Rogers' transformation, which had turned an ordinary man into a super-soldier.
While Noah was thinking, Bucky had already drawn close.
Noah glanced at Rogers and Fury, who were still talking. Then he looked at the tightly stationed security personnel.
Didn't they hear the gunshots earlier?
"Maybe Constantine and the others were too efficient," Noah thought. "Never mind. I'll help out. Might as well give Rogers some exercise."
With that, Noah pulled out his pistol.
Rogers and Fury froze.
Before either of them could ask what he was doing, Noah flicked his wrist and pulled the trigger.
Bang.
A security guard clutched his hand and collapsed to the ground. At the same time, Noah seized control of him, forcing the trembling man to point toward Bucky's position.
They were in the VIP area. It wasn't as noisy as the dance floor.
The gunshot was unmistakable.
Screams erupted instantly. People scattered in every direction.
The only ones who didn't move were Noah, Fury, Rogers—and a stunned Bucky.
Rogers and Fury were shocked by Noah's blatant action.
Bucky hadn't reacted yet. He hadn't done anything. But he was still a super-soldier. Once he realized he'd been exposed, he counterattacked immediately.
He drew his pistol and fired several shots straight at Fury.
They never reached him.
The seven bullets vanished the moment they neared Noah and his companions.
Bucky's attention was fully on Fury. That gave a nearby security guard an opening.
A heavy punch landed squarely on Bucky's face.
Bucky, still confused about the disappearing bullets, didn't even react. Maybe he didn't care.
The punch knocked his mask clean off.
"What?!"
Rogers had been watching the man Noah had disrupted. The moment he saw that face, he gasped and stood up.
It was Bucky.
That face was unmistakable.
"You know him?" Fury asked, surprised.
Rogers didn't answer.
He charged forward.
Bucky frowned. The mission had failed. Staying here made no sense anymore, especially after being exposed.
He turned and ran.
Rogers didn't hesitate. He accelerated instantly and gave chase.
Along the way, Vigo's security guards tried to intervene. It didn't matter.
Ordinary men couldn't interfere in a fight between two super-soldiers.
A chase worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster unfolded. The two pursued each other, casually dealing with anyone who got in their way.
Noah watched with clear interest.
Fury stood there, still processing everything, even after Constantine arrived.
"Whoa?" Constantine said, a cigarette hanging from his mouth as he dropped into a seat beside Noah. Jason and Wick stood behind him, looking slightly stiff. "What's going on here?"
"Nothing special," Noah said, spreading his hands. "Those two clearly know each other. And the guy being chased by Captain America is obviously controlled."
"Controlled?" Fury latched onto the word instantly.
His thoughts raced.
Controlled. And he knew Steve Rogers.
A line formed in his mind.
Someone who knew Steve had to be from World War II.
Among the Howling Commandos, there was only one man who had supposedly died.
Fury's eyes widened.
"Bucky?" he blurted out. "Bucky Barnes? How is that possible? Was he frozen too?"
His imagination wasn't bad. He had grasped several key points.
Noah didn't answer.
He just looked at Constantine and smiled.
"So," Noah asked calmly, "how did things go on your end?"
"Smooth," Constantine replied casually. "All done. No problems."
