Chapter 134: Old Languages

"Master? I recommend demolition or exploding charms," Nyxaris said. "According to the Great Guide of the Undead, written by Lord Floid in the ninety-twen—"

"Go ahead and do that," James told her. "The one on the right is for you." The giants were almost on them.

Nyxaris began by enhancing her wings with a charm so she could move faster, and then flew in between the giant's legs, positioning herself on its back. Her hands moved quickly, forming her next piece of magic. "Bombarda Maxima."

Her spell hit the back of the monster, right at the top of its vertebral spine, and broke several small pieces. But for the most part, the creature remained whole, and it promptly began to repair.

For his part, James also decided to enhance his legs for faster movement and avoided being grabbed by the other giant skeleton. It would only take him one mistake to die here.

"Master, their bones are reinforced by magical enchantments," Nyxaris said. "The probability of a bombardment spell doing substantial damage is less than five percent."

"I figure that much. These two are far from normal undead. The necromancers must have put a lot of time and effort into creating them. This is their magnum opus... Of course, their bones were going to be protected," James told the fairy.

His second creation was clever and powerful, but she was still naive in her methodical way of thinking and could just use whatever knowledge she had acquired from his memories or from reading books whenever she sneaked into the Hogwarts library after it was closed.

"Now it's my turn." James jumped backward to avoid a massive fist being slammed onto the ground. Then he moved his wand a dozen times while molding the magic inside his body.

His eyes shone brightly as he spoke a single word. "द्रवित (Melt)."

A yellow orb manifested in front of him and immediately shot out towards the giant.

The creature was slow and clumsy and had no chance to avoid it.

The orb hit it right on its forehead. Some kind of liquid was splashed all over its skull. The acidic liquid began to melt the bones while making a sizzling noise.

The giant skeleton attempted to move again, but James's spell had already corroded all its face and eyes, preventing it from finding its target.

James only had to move away once more, and after a few more seconds, the giant could no longer fight or move.

The corrosion had progressed to the rest of its body, and the bones began to crack under the sheer weight.

Nyxaris glanced at him with an unreadable expression. "Master… that language… It is not in my memory. It's not Sumerian nor Mesopotamian."

"That was Sanskrit. An old language close to the source of magic. And no, I did not place it in your memory," James said as he sent a blasting curse to the other giant to stop its attack on Nyxaris, although it didn't cause much damage to the giant.

He quickly followed with another corrosive orb.

Just like before, the spell managed to melt away all the skeleton's bones in a matter of seconds, leaving nothing but a yellow smoking puddle.

"Okay, I think we are done here," James commented as he went to check the rest of the place, just to make sure.

"Master… why?" Nyxaris flew next to him.

"Why what?" James peeked at her.

"Why withhold information about magic? Isn't it my primary function to serve as a depository for magical knowledge?"

"True, that is your function. But not every piece of magic should be passed on for future generations. Some... some knowledge would be better being lost, as it is too dangerous." Ancient tongues were not the only thing that he failed to share with this fairy. His mind was filled with all the knowledge he had acquired in his 150-year-old life. A good part of it, he had spent traveling all over the world, and it was during these travels that James had learned about magical creations so dark... that they would make Voldemort blush.

He had rarely withheld knowledge from his students, even dangerous ones. He was of the belief that it was up to the wizard and witch to know how to properly make use of that knowledge.

But there were exceptions.

"But Master… I s—"

"That's enough, Nyxaris. Return to your ring form and rest," James ordered. This was the first time he had seen this fairy show anything resembling emotions. However, this was not up for argument.

He could not pass on to her, the knowledge of any magic close to the source. That magic was more complex than just saying the words and moving the wand. Any mistake could cost your life.

James went on to examine the other rooms of the hideout and found the rest of the necromancers' bodies, including their leader.

It appears that his little slime had done short work of everyone in here.

The stone had gained a little bit more color, although just a little bit more.

"I'm going to need at least another ten more hunts like this one. If I am lucky." He only had a week at most to complete this task. Then he would need to finish the stone, among other things, and he had to do this before returning to Hogwarts.

He would not dare to perform any sort of dark ritual inside the walls of that castle, as it was likely that Dumbledore would discover him.

"Tempus." James said out loud. "Mmm, it's almost midnight already."

He pulled out the notes he had about the hideouts.

"There is a dark cabal of witches right outside Paris. For the other ones, I'm going to have to travel further east."

James took a small flask and drank its contents. It was another 'Pepper-Up' potion to keep him awake. This was the second he took tonight, and it was not going to be the last one.

"This is going to be a very long night."
