Melanie didn't get to finish her sentence.
Elais cut across her words without hesitation. "Cadence and I will be leaving tonight," he said flatly. "You don't have to worry about us anymore."
The finality in his tone made her stop mid-breath.
Melanie blinked, taken aback, her gaze snapping to his face. He wasn't even looking at her properly. His jaw was tight, his movements controlled in that way that told her he was angry, even if he wasn't raising his voice.
She frowned slightly, her mind struggling to make sense of it. She would have expected something else entirely,maybe relief, maybe even quiet happiness, after all, he had come back to find Cadence in his bed, waiting for him last night. Something that had even surprised her. She had not expected Cadence to give in so easily.. Shouldn't that have pleased him? That was what she had assumed would happen.
