It only took me a few minutes to finally make it up to the sixth floor. A convenient sign hung on the wall by the door, depicting a large '6'.
Finally, made it. I should take a shower...
Just as my hand touched the door knob, I suddenly heard some soft, muffled sobs coming from directly above me.
Is someone crying?
Curiosity got the better of me, and I turned around and walked up another flight of stairs.
Leslie?!
Sure enough, my eye landed on a small figure leaning against the wall, sobbing continuously. Her cries were so intense that she didn't notice that I was standing just a few steps below her.
My heart tightened inside my chest. She looked like an angel, but her face was streaked with tears instead of her usual bright smile.
I immediately took a step upwards, leaning over to gently touch her arm. "Leslie, what's wrong? Did something happen?"
The last time I saw her look so upset was at Sunday Mass when I took her to the park.
