Chapter 513 - f 4

As the moon rose high in the sky, casting its pale light over the Tohno mansion, Shiki lay awake in his bed, his thoughts a tangled web of fear and uncertainty. He could feel the darkness closing in around him, the weight of unseen eyes watching his every move.

He wiped the last few grains of rice from his plate, feeling a sense of warmth settle in his chest from the simple yet satisfying meal Kohaku had brought him. The day had been long and filled with strange occurrences that left his mind swirling with questions, and he had hoped that dinner would be a quiet moment of respite. However, as he pushed his plate aside and stood up, he felt a gnawing sense of unease return.

He needed to speak with Akiha, to make amends for being late and perhaps gain some clarity on the strange events that had been haunting him since he returned to the Tohno mansion. The weight of the mysterious encounters with Miss Agnès Gramheart and the girl with the scythe lingered in his thoughts like a shadow, and now there was the unsettling exchange with Noel-sensei to consider as well.

...

Shiki left his room and walked down the hallway towards the living room, hoping to find his sister there. The mansion was quiet, save for the faint creaks and groans of the old building settling into the night. As he approached the living room, Shiki couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. There was a tension in the air, a subtle shift in the atmosphere that set his nerves on edge.

He pushed open the heavy wooden door and stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the dimly lit space. The ornate furniture and lavish décor looked exactly as they always did, but there was an unfamiliar presence in the room that immediately caught his attention.

Sitting in one of the high-backed armchairs, with a glass of wine cradled in his pale hands, was a young man who couldn't have been more than a few years older than Shiki himself. The man's skin was almost unnaturally pale, accentuating the dark, sharp lines of his features. His hair was a deep, dark brown, meticulously combed into an undercut that gave him an air of calculated precision. He wore a black suit that fit him perfectly, the dark fabric almost blending into the shadows of the room. The only splash of color was the deep wine red of his shirt, which seemed to pulse like a heartbeat against the stark contrast of his suit.

Shiki hesitated in the doorway, his instincts screaming at him that something was wrong. The young man's presence felt out of place, like a jagged piece of glass in an otherwise smooth surface. And then there were his eyes: Crimson Red, deep and ominous, the same shade as those of Miss Gramheart and the girl with the scythe. Those eyes seemed to see right through Shiki, as if they could peer into the darkest corners of his soul.

The man looked up, noticing Shiki for the first time. He smiled, a slow, deliberate curl of his lips that sent a shiver down Shiki's spine.

"Ah, you must be Shiki Tohno," the man said, his voice smooth and cultured, with a hint of something cold lurking beneath the surface. "I've heard a great deal about you."

Shiki forced himself to step further into the room, his heart pounding in his chest. "Yes, I'm Shiki. And you are?"

The man set his wine glass down on the table beside him and rose to his feet in a fluid motion. He was tall, taller than Shiki by a few inches, and there was a certain grace to his movements that made him seem almost inhuman. He extended a hand, his smile never wavering.

"My name is Abel DeVille," he said, his tone polite but carrying an undercurrent of something darker. "I'm the CEO of DeVille Solutions, the agency that Miss Agnès Gramheart works for."

Shiki's eyes widened slightly at the mention of Miss Gramheart. The memory of their encounter, her cold demeanor, the way she seemed to radiate an aura of danger, flashed through his mind. He had felt uneasy around her, and now here was her superior, standing in the Tohno mansion as if he belonged there.

"DeVille Solutions..." Shiki repeated, trying to keep his voice steady. "That's the agency that recently opened in Souya, right?"

"Indeed," DeVille replied, his red eyes gleaming with a hint of amusement. "Lady Akiha has entrusted us with certain... sensitive matters concerning the Tohno estate. We specialize in providing discreet and effective solutions to any problems that may arise."

There was something in the way DeVille spoke that made Shiki feel like the man was speaking in riddles, each word carefully chosen to obscure the true meaning behind them. Shiki couldn't shake the feeling that DeVille was toying with him, testing him somehow.

"And what brings you here tonight?" Shiki asked, trying to keep his tone casual despite the unease gnawing at him.

DeVille's smile widened slightly, his gaze never leaving Shiki's. "I came to discuss some business with Lady Akiha, but I also wanted to take the opportunity to meet the young master of the Tohno family. After all, it's important to know the people you're working with."

Shiki felt a chill run down his spine at the way DeVille said "young master." There was something almost mocking in his tone, as if he were playing a game that only he knew the rules to.

"Well, it's... nice to meet you," Shiki replied, though the words felt hollow even as he said them.

DeVille's eyes glinted with something unreadable, and he took a step closer to Shiki. "Tell me, Shiki, have you ever considered working part-time? We're always on the lookout for talented individuals, and I believe you might have certain... qualities that could be of great value to us."

Shiki blinked, caught off guard by the sudden offer. The last thing he wanted was to get involved with anything related to DeVille Solutions, especially after his unsettling encounter with Miss Gramheart. There was something dangerous about this man, something that made Shiki want to keep as much distance as possible.

"Thanks, but I'm not really looking for a job right now," Shiki said, trying to sound polite but firm.

DeVille chuckled softly, a sound that was far from comforting. "Oh, I understand. You have your studies, your responsibilities... But if you ever change your mind, the offer stands. I think you'd find the work quite... enlightening."

Shiki felt a flicker of anger at the way DeVille seemed to be pushing him, trying to lure him into something he didn't understand. But more than that, he felt a deep, instinctual fear—a fear that told him this man was not someone he wanted to be indebted to in any way.

"I appreciate the offer, but I'll have to pass," Shiki said, his voice firm.

DeVille's smile didn't falter, but there was a glint of something in his eyes—disappointment? Amusement? It was hard to tell. "Very well, Shiki. I admire a man who knows his own mind."

With that, DeVille turned away, his attention seemingly shifting to something else. But before he left, he glanced back at Shiki, his red eyes gleaming in the dim light.

"I'll be speaking with Lady Akiha now," he said, his tone as smooth as ever. "But do remember what I said, Shiki. The night is full of mysteries, and it's always wise to keep an open mind."

And with that, DeVille strode out of the living room, leaving Shiki standing alone in the heavy silence that followed his departure.

Shiki let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding, his entire body tense. There was something profoundly unsettling about Abel DeVille, something that made Shiki feel like he had just brushed up against the edge of a very dark, very dangerous world.

As the echo of De Ville's footsteps faded down the hallway, Shiki found himself rooted to the spot, a lingering sense of dread curling in his stomach. The man's polite demeanor had been nothing more than a thin veneer, barely hiding the malevolence that lurked beneath. And those red eyes... They were the same as Miss Gramheart's and the mysterious girl with the scythe—eyes that seemed to peer into the very essence of a person, stripping away all pretense and leaving nothing but fear in their wake.

What kind of agency was DeVille Solutions? And what exactly had his sister gotten involved with? The questions piled up in Shiki's mind, each one more troubling than the last. But one thing was certain: Abel DeVille was not someone to be trusted.

With a shudder, Shiki decided that he'd had enough for one night. The mansion, once a place of security and familiarity, now felt suffocating, its corridors filled with unseen threats. He needed to retreat to his room, to the one place where he could try to make sense of everything that had happened.

Shiki turned and headed back down the hallway, his footsteps echoing softly in the empty space. The weight of the day pressed heavily on his shoulders, and all he wanted was to find some semblance of peace. But as he reached his room and closed the door behind him, Shiki couldn't shake the feeling that something dark was lurking just beyond the edges of his understanding, waiting for the right moment to strike.

He lay down on his bed, staring up at the ceiling as the events of the day replayed in his mind like a twisted, inescapable dream. The night was still, but Shiki knew that it held secrets—secrets that were slowly, inevitably drawing him into their web.

As sleep finally claimed him, Shiki's last thoughts were of Abel DeVille's parting words:

"The night is full of mysteries, and it's always wise to keep an open mind."

But in Shiki's heart, he knew that some mysteries were better left unsolved.
