Chapter 15 - Typical Bickering Between Sisters

Chapter 15

Third POV

Beth was looking at Emma cautiously, the duel haired girl seemed to be irked by her sister's staring. "Are you done? I am not a mirror that will show you how much of a witch you are." Emma spoke, eating the lasagna that was served for dinner with the other kids in the orphanage. They were all seated by each other in the dining hall, not all the children were present, the babies were still in the nursery, being taken care of the nannies. Mother was sitting at the front of the table, observing all the kids, making sure they all ate. Emma was expecting a response from Beth but received nothing, her sister remained quiet and continued to her food yet still managed to keep her eyes on her. Emma stood up from her seat, after she was done with her meal. She wouldn't be able to skip her meal, as she was wounded, and Mother would force her to finish it. She slowly moved the left side of her body, looking at the bite mark on her shoulder that felt numb, but she couldn't feel the pain either. She would have considered it to be Beth's handwork, but Beth and the other kids weren't allowed to have pain killers on them.

"Emma?" She was called by Mother, who glanced at her, noticing her weird walking stance after leaving the dining room. "Yes, mother?" She replied. "Nevermind, just go to your room. I will ask Beth instead." Mother responded, waving at Emma, who continued to walk down the halls of the orphanage. She descended down the stairs, since the orphanage was sort of a bungalow with a basement but actually had two huge spaces which were rectangular in shape, allowing her to see the sky. The midnight color with shining stars decorated around the moon, it was as breathtaking as the way the sun rays would reflect on the surface of the ocean, making it shine like diamonds. The beauty made by the universe itself, using the laws of physics, well mostly using light, made Emma wonder why Arts and physics weren't considered to be close.

But who really knows the reason why?

Emma continued to move down the stairs, which were attached to a small wall that prevented her or the others from falling down and giving balance to the stairs, the small wall also descended down with the stairs which was spread through the inside of the building under both holes, purposely left on the roof, the top of the wall was uncovered and was left to be decorated by various plants and flowers, that were watered regularly by the residents of the orphanage and metal poles with wires, where placed under those places, so they could dry their clothes inside of the building. Emma watched as the other kids ran downstairs as well from the dining room to their fun room. It was a weekend, so they weren't sent to bed as they would have, from a distance, Emma could see Beth glancing at her, while following Mother to the nursery, before mouthing to her as she passed by. "Sleep well." Emma scoffed but nodded anyway, Beth wanted the best for her, she always did, even if they could both get on each other's nerves a lot.

Emma finally reached her room, as she went to Beth's side of the bed, the lower bunk as she was advised to stay down to make it easier for Mother or any other adult in the orphanage to check up on her, she wasn't a fan of the extra attention but it's what happens when one gets sick. She looked at her pillow, realizing it was stained with her blood and headed to the laundry room, making sure no one saw her since she would get reprimanded for trying to chores in her state. She was injured not crippled, which frustrated her a lot, but she had no say in the matter. She placed the pillowcase in a basket filled with her other blood stained clothes, bringing out the detergent and other chemicals to remove the blood from it, as she opened one of the washing machines in front of her, poured the detergent and chemicals through the hatch attached to the washing machine, then set it to rinsing and drying after it was done washing.

Emma waited, as she sat down by one of the stools in the room, before bringing out the dry clothes and went back to her room, looking through the draws for a clean pillowcase, putting it on her pillow, keeping her dry clothes after folding them neatly. The dual haired girl entered her bed, enjoying the softness of the pillow and the comfort her blanket provided her as it covered her. The only problem she couldn't solve was being able to fall asleep, it was like something was forcing her to stay awake and she wanted to sleep badly, the next day was church service, and she didn't want to have just half of her energy through the preaching, standing up to praise or pray, even the dancing. She may not be allowed to go but she couldn't be too careful. Seconds seemed like minutes, minutes felt like countless hours to her, the constant moving in bed, her eyes refusing to stay shut, making it even harder for her to sleep.

The little girl went as far as to jump around her room to tire herself out, but not too much, she wasn't ready to rip any stitches and be forced to endure the pain again without the help of painkillers in her system. Emma didn't notice the creeping sound made by her door, as an amused Beth watched her run around the room like a headless cockroach. Emma still felt energetic and unaware of her senses, while Beth climbed up on the bunk bed, resting her body and looked at Emma. She fell asleep before Emma could even get tired, it took her two hours to run out of energy and collapse onto her bed but it didn't matter to her, she was finally asleep.
