Amon didn't give him time to catch his breath.
The great demon spread its arms wide, and fire came pouring out of it.
It started in the glowing cracks beneath its red skin, the places that had been smoldering like coals since it transformed. Now they caught. Flames burst up along its arms, across its shoulders, down its back, until its whole enormous body was wreathed in roaring orange fire. Its wings went last. Every long black feather lit at once, and the wings became two vast sheets of flame stretching out across the village, blotting out the sky with smoke.
The heat hit Jin like a wall.
He felt the water on his skin turn to steam in an instant. His wet hair hissed. The river around his ankles began to bubble. The air itself went so hot it hurt to breathe, scorching the inside of his nose and throat.
And then Amon beat its wings.
