Chapter 9 - Swarm

Killing the Swarm was harder than he thought.

They were like bullet sponges, no matter how many died, more would take their place.

Before long, they were already at his feet.

The moment one of them touched his boot, he kicked the creature as hard as he could into it's brethren. It slammed into the ones behind him with enough force to knock them back.

The creatures didn't care, scrambling over their fallen brothers to get towards him.

To rip into him.

It hadn't even been 5 seconds before they were on him again. They clawed at him with their oddly bent limbs, seeking to rip into him and trip him over.

Thames grunted as he moved forward, punctuating the sounds of their screeches with his gun.

BANG

BANG.

The shots rang out, tearing through a multitude of them. It did little to stop them as they climbed onto him. Seeking anywhere in his Armor that would allow them to bring him down.

The light beams on Thames's visor didn't do much to help his visibility as the creatures crowded around him, their weight pulling down the Armor. Claws scraped the reinforced alloys from all sides.

Thames attacked the creatures as much as they attacked him. He couldn't use the Great Sword or Spear as they were way too big to be able to maneuver comfortably in the claustrophobic staircase.

The Flashbangs were also a no-no as he didn't wasn't eager to find out how Flashbangs felt in close range.

All he could do was tear into them using the large knife he had and blow off their heads with the gun.

And that's what he did, the staircase was filled with chaos as Thames advanced. He couldn't see 2 inches in front of him but that didn't matter. The creatures were so many that aiming was a waste of time.

He pressed onwards, each step crushing something beneath the Armor's boots.

CRUNCH.

The metallic shing of his knife resounded as he swung it around, the metal found it's mark in the bodies of multiple creatures, angled in such a way as to cinch the gaps in their armored plates.

The massacre flowed into a rhythm as Thames charged forward, a battering ram of metal and gun fire. Slamming beats against the wall, Crushing them under his boots as their blood and armor fragments turned the floor slick with blood.

Thames had gone into the same flow as when he fought the Fistraich ( that's what he decided to call the four armed freak).

Thames had been continuing onward when the pressure from the swarm mounted, he quickly realized they were pushing him somewhere.

Thames fought against the current of the creatures, eager to not get caught in whatever they were planning. If they were half as battle smart as the Fistraich, this battle wasn't going to end well.

'Come on ,just keep moving forward' Thames thought as he continued to fight against the swarm, doing his best to break through them but eventually, their weight on him was too much, they pushed him step by step, inch by inch until finally he fell over the railing and down the stairwell.

Thames barely had time to curse as he felt the Mechs weight punched through the landing , the concrete screeching like a dying animal.

The creatures followed, pouring onto him, his Visor lights cutting a beam of white through the pitch black darkness of their chitinous plates.

The visor HUD went haywire, alternating through what was probably warning signals faster than Thames could read them. Not that he bothered as all he could think of was grim thoughts of his coming future.

"I'm so going to die here, buried under these overgrown cockroaches"

The creatures lept after him, jumping off the bodies of their falling comrades to tear into him, not caring about the fall they were also partaking in.

Thames pivoted in mid air and fired away into the swarm, the bullets ripping through their bodies. The ones that got close got punches to commensurate their efforts.

Thames was about to turn around to check how close he was to landing or impending doom when he crashed through another level.

CLANG

CRASH

As he fell, the spaces between each level became smaller, before where it would take a while before crashing through another floor, now he was tearing through floors like-

"Well, there's not really an apt metaphor for this experience" Thames ruminated, trying and failing to find humor in this situation.

Another monster got closer. It clamped on his back, futilely trying to gain access to the soft human inside.

Thames roared, grabbed it mid-twist and threw it below him. It smashed against a wall leaving a bloody smear. There was no time to think.

Thames smashed into the final floor, bracing himself to land on the cold-hard floor. Instead he felt a sickening wet crunch. Multiple of the same swarm like creatures were just below him.

"Shit, they pushed me into the bulk of the swarm" Thames realized as tried to stand up. The monsters under him clamored for him and the ones above him finally fell.

They landed like meteors, crushing into the floor with each one. After a while there was enough carcasses to cushion the fall of the rest.

Thames jumped off his impromptu landing bed and limped away from the stairs towards the main part of the floor as that's where light was coming from.

The monsters were still falling behind him as he sheathed his Knife and pulled out the Spear and increased it to it's full length.

He had just gotten to the main hall when he saw it. It looked like the swarm, only larger and longer. It's entire body filled the hall, hundreds of legs ending in a curved black hook, it's body was covered in chitinous plates, so black that they reflected the entire hall.

Thames was filled with awe and fear as he realized "They didn't want to bring me to the main swarm, they wanted to bring me to this, it can only be their Queen".

Thames shuddered in realization as he craned his neck up to see the rest of it's body. He saw the gigantic head of the creature, sporting eight eyes that were a glowing crimson.

Looking at them was like looking into a furnace fed by something unnatural. Thames discovered what it was quickly.

An intense hunger radiated from the beast as he realized it's full attention was on him.
