Chapter 83 - Chapter 83: Next Phase

Getting out of bed, I did my morning exercises, ridding any remaining drowsiness, before getting dressed and exiting my room, doing so at the same time as Korra, who looked as if she had just gotten out of bed; her hair was a mess, her clothes were ruffled, and she was rubbing her eyes while yawning. "Mhm, I-I'm tired."

Shaking my head with a wry expression, I waved my hand, hitting Korra with a powerful gust of wind, knocking the last vestiges of sleep out of her while she fell onto her back, silently staring at the ceiling in annoyance. "I hate you, Aang." "Wasn't it Roku who woke you up?" "Ugh, thanks for reminding me. I also hate him." Faintly chuckling, I grabbed her hand, helping her onto her feet while she walked beside me, fixing her appearance.

Exiting the trunk, we leaped off the branch, falling to the ground while I slowed our descent, gently landing on the ground before approaching Roku and Kyoshi, who were standing in front of Jathr; however, when we came, Roku scrunched his face in disgust while stepping back. "You two stink." Blankly eyeing Roku, who covered his mouth and nose, I shifted my gaze to Kyoshi, who remained impassive, but as if I wouldn't be able to tell she had stopped breathing when we got close.

"I actually feel more offended that you stayed silent and stopped breathing." Kyoshi gave me a quiet look before taking several steps back, breathing once more, which caused my face to twitch. Meanwhile, Roku had to deal with Korra, who tended to react more to her emotions.

"Stink!? How dare you tell a woman she stinks, you old fogey! Get your ass over here!" Angrily yelling at Roku, Korra charged at him, engaging him in physical battle, quickly forcing him purely onto the defensive while he tried to mend the situation. "K-Korra, please relax, we have to work together to deal with the swarm of corrupted spirits!" "Huh? Relax!? If you want me to relax, let me punch your ugly face!" "Eh, u-ugly? That is uncalled for, Korra! I'll let you know, I was considered very handsome."

As the two got into a more heated fight, even going so far as to use their bending, which ended up as a stalemate since they perfectly countered each other, Kyoshi and I quietly watched them. Of course, she was standing a distance away from me. "Her movements are better. You're teaching has been paying off, Aang." "Ah, well, I hope they have been; I would be more than a bit disappointed if my hours of teaching her were all for naught."

After watching for a bit more, I sensed a great deal of movement through the air from far away that suddenly appeared, prompting me to intervene; Kyoshi must've sensed the same thing through seismic sense as she also stepped in. Kyoshi erected an earth wall, blocking Korra's water, while I clasp my palms before separating them, creating a vacuum directly in front of Roku, causing his flames to vanish.

"They're coming." Eyeing Korra and Roku, the former shot him a glare before reluctantly lowering her arms, prompting them to stand beside us as we faced the hills in the distance, separating us from the deserted, barren world. Several minutes passed, and finally, they appeared; they emerged from beyond the hills like a sea of ants exiting from their ant hill.

"Hmm, is it just me, or does this one seem a bit larger?" "It's just you, Korra." Kyoshi's response relaxed Korra while Roku and I stepped forward, intending to start off just like we had previously. "If you comment on my smell, I'll direct the flames in reverse." Roku merely chuckled as he punched forward while I thrust my palm, the air I commanded circulating around Roku's flames, causing them to grow several times stronger and hotter.

Unlike before, Kyoshi didn't wait and quickly erected several massive walls, directing the sea of corrupted spirits into our combined attack. "Korra, cover the ground in water." Briefly glancing at Korra, she tilted her head, confused at my command, but still, she followed through, and using the near infinite reserves of the water atop the leaves of Jathr, she covered the ground in water, turning it into thick mud at least a foot deep, significantly slowing the corrupted spirits' charge.

"Oh, you're so smart, Aang." "Well, someone was too stupid to come up with it on their own." "Haa, Roku." "Huh, the hell you say, old man!?" "Focus, you two." Thankfully, Kyoshi's no-nonsense voice put them in their place as we worked together to face the onslaught of corrupted spirits for the next two hours, doing so much better than the first two times.

"Ugh, that was so long!" Glancing at an exhausted Korra lying on her back, I waved my hand, lifting her into the air while leaning against the tree. "It was longer, but also safer. None of us suffered an injury." "Hmm, I don't really like the way you said that." Rolling my eyes, I leaped into the air, creating a vortex that lifted both of us high into the sky.

"Now wash up unless you want Roku to continue mocking you." My words dispelled any exhaustion Korra felt as she broke free from my hold on her and landed on the branch I was standing on. "Hmph, before we return to our worlds, I'll make sure to beat him up at least once!" Watching Korra head to one of the leaves in the distance, I followed suit, washing my body and clothes at a different leaf, though halfway through, Roku ended up joining me.

"Ho, what a lovely smell." "Testing the limits of an Air Nomad's virtue are we?" "Haha, just some lighthearted joking, Aang. Unlike that lass, you can handle them." "Well, that 'lass' has promised herself that before we return to our worlds, she'll defeat you, so be careful. She's not exactly the kind to care too much about fairness so long as she can win." As I gave Roku a warning in advance, he just chuckled in amusement while sinking into the dew.

"Oh, I appreciate the concern, but if that lass defeats me, I'll need to revoke my title as the Avatar." "Be careful now, Roku. Korra is very talented. It just doesn't show much as we can only use our innate bending." "Ah, whatever you say, Aang. Oh, help me out." Dissmissively waving his hand, Roku outstretched his hand, creating a small but potent flame while telling me his plan for heating the water, prompting me to quickly agree.

Creating a protective spherical vortex around the flame, Roku lowered his hand into the dew, letting it sink to the very bottom, only for the water to slowly heat up, causing us to simuleantly sigh in relief. "Mhm, this feels great. I must say, I'm glad you're a man, Roku." "I can say the same for you, Aang." Sinking a little deeper into the dew, we enjoyed the warm water while casually conversing, and whenever it started to get too hot, I would snuff out the flame.

After some time, we eventually left the leaf, drying ourselves with our own bending before returning to the trunk around the same time as Korra and Kyoshi, who had washed her face-paint off. "Hmm, why do you two look so refreshed?" Hearing Korra's suspicious voice, Roku and I looked at each other, and with a gaze of complete understanding, we glanced back at Korra. "I don't know." "It probably was because I wasn't in your presence."

Korra did not like Roku's teasing response, though we were all too hungry to fight, so we quickly headed to the dining area, where we ate to our fill while Kyoshi, Roku, and I discussed how to find Father Glowworm.

After we finished, we all dispersed to do our own stuff since we decided to watch Father Glowworm's movements for the next several weeks.

During that time, I'd spend it either exploring Jathr, as it was an utterly massive safe haven for every remaining non-corrupted spirit in this world, training by myself, since while I've reached a plateau in air bending, I had nothing better to do, after all, I couldn't practice any of the other three bending.

I also continued to teach Korra, who I would spar with whenever she was 'bored'... She never won. I would also occasionally spar with Roku and Kyoshi; I had to limit myself with Roku, otherwise I could just surround him in a vacuum, making him defenseless. As for Kyoshi, our spars actually ended up rather intense as neither of us was an easy opponent; so much so that we decided the winner of the spar based on the first successful attack.

Currently, we are tied three-three.

However, despite our somewhat fun life, the attacks on Jathr continued every seven days, and we learned from them; though, before we knew it, three months passed, and finally, we decided to explore the barren wasteland together, along with an extra person.
