Arthur's patience thinned.
"Enough," he said quietly.
Shadow gathered along his arm, condensing into his spear. Violet lightning coiled around the shaft, snapping and hissing. The charge climbed higher into the clouds of Hell's sky, until streaks of amethyst thunder began crawling above the altar.
Lilith was not impressed. Instead, she lifted one hand and pressed her palm lightly toward the stone beneath them.
The altar awakened.
Crimson light intensified in vast concentric circles beneath their feet, spreading outward. The fossilized remains embedded in the stone started to glow as well.
Arthur glanced down once. When he looked back at her, his eyes burned brighter.
"I'm afraid I can't permit this," he said, "Earth already suffers of more monsters than it deserves."
Lightning cracked overhead, answering him.
Lilith's lips curved faintly.
"How noble of you."
Arthur did not waste another word.
He hurled the spear.
It tore through the air like a comet, an eruption of violet radiance that split the darkness in two. Thunder detonated behind it, the shockwave shattering loose fragments of the surrounding ruin.
Lilith moved at the last possible instant.
Darkness folded around her like wings. The spear pierced through the space she had occupied, but she was already gone, teleporting in a ripple of black distortion.
The spear struck a distant spire instead.
The explosion of lightning vaporized half of it.
Stone rained down in molten fragments.
Lilith reappeared several yards away, hovering lightly above the ground. Shadows wrapped around her.
"How cold of you," she murmured, almost teasing. "Refusing a mother her freedom."
Arthur extended his hand; the spear dissolved from the shattered ruin and reformed in his grasp with a crackle.
"Spare me the bullshit."
The shadows at his feet shifted.
Then suddenly they appeared.
Two figures erupted from the darkness itself, one from his left, one from his right moving with blistering speed.
A flaming kick aimed for his ribs.
A blade of condensed hellfire slashing toward his neck.
Arthur reacted without turning his head.
His left hand shot out and caught a wrist mid-strike.
His right hand clamped around a leg inches before it connected.
The impact alone fractured the stone around him.
Hellfire ignited instantly.
It raced up their limbs, engulfing his hands in roaring infernal flame. The heat distorted the air.
Yet Arthur did not budge.
His boots ground into the altar, cracks spiderwebbing outward from his stance as he held them suspended, one by the wrist, the other by the ankle before either blow could land.
The flames crawled across his arms, but his shadow armor surged in answer, devouring the hellfire before it could burn flesh.
For a brief second, all three remained locked in that stance, Arthur slowly turned his head.
His gaze settled first on the woman whose leg he held, her helmet blazing like wildfire, eyes fierce.
Then to the demon in his other grasp, taller, composed, a cruel smile playing at the edge of his lips.
"So," Arthur said evenly, tightening his grip despite the flames, "you must be Blaze… and Satanus."
The man grinned wider.
"An honor, Shadow Lord," Satanus replied smoothly, as though greeting him at court rather than mid-assault.
Blaze answered with action.
She twisted her trapped leg and ignited her other foot in a sudden burst of intensified hellfire, swinging it toward Arthur's face with explosive force.
Arthur released them both at once, pushing them both away with Ruler's authority.
He bent backward just enough for the flaming kick to slice through empty air, heat grazing his cheek.
Then he propelled himself upward in a controlled backflip.
He landed several meters away, boots touching down lightly despite the cratered stone beneath him. The spear spun once in his grip before settling against his shoulder.
"Impressive," he admitted coolly. "You slipped past my marshals without a whisper."
Satanus rolled his wrist once, flexing fingers that still smoked faintly from Arthur's grip.
"Your shadow slaves?" he said, voice calm but laced with disdain. "Clever constructs."
A faint smirk.
"But they are simple pieces on a board nonetheless."
Blaze cracked her neck, embers drifting from her helmet.
"They were entertaining to watch," she added. "Especially when they bullied the lessers."
Arthur's gaze flicked briefly toward the perimeter of the city in the distance, where his shadow marshals still guarded the city.
Then back to them.
Before he could respond, Lilith's soft laughter echoed once more.
She hovered higher now, wings outstretched, crimson light bathing her from below as the altar's glow intensified.
"Make me proud," she said to her children, her tone affectionate and commanding. "Remind him why we do not yield so easily."
Her eyes returned to Arthur.
"When you are finished with this man," she added smoothly, "join me."
And then she dissolved again, darkness swallowing her form entirely.
Arthur exhaled sharply through his nose, irritated.
The altar's crimson radiance did not fade.
If anything, it grew stronger.
Blaze noticed where his gaze lingered.
She laughed.
"Don't waste the effort," she said, flames flaring along her arms. "This entire region is the altar. It isn't a structure you can smash."
Satanus gestured around them lightly.
"You stand upon the ritual itself."
"Destroying a stone won't it," Blaze finished, rolling her shoulders as fire spiraled around her.
Arthur's eyes returned to neutral calm.
"I assumed as much,"
Crimson light pulsed through the cracks in the stone. Violet lightning clawed across the sky above them.
Then Blaze attacked again.
She came like a meteor.
Flame detonated behind her in a concussive blast, propelling her forward with blinding speed. Her fist, wrapped in spiraling hellfire, drove straight toward Arthur's face.
Satanus moved with her, no roar of power. His shadows peeled away from his feet and slid across the ground like living tar, rising behind Arthur in jagged spears aimed for spine and skull.
Arthur pivoted.
Blaze's flaming punch collided with the haft of his spear instead of his face, erupting in a shockwave of fire and lightning. At the same instant, Arthur twisted his wrist and the spear extended into a spinning arc, shredding the rising shadow spears behind him before they could strike.
Blaze grinned, teeth bared. "We've observed your recent fights.. And you're slower than before," she taunted, pressing forward with another barrage, kick, elbow, spinning backfist, each strike detonating on impact like artillery shells.
Satanus reappeared from the shredded darkness above, descending with a blade of condensed black energy aimed at Arthur's collarbone.
"You've exhausted yourself, Shadow Lord." Satanus added coolly. "Neron. The city. Your precious shadows... it should be a lot even for the likes of Lucifer."
Arthur slipped between Blaze's next two blows, letting her flames skim across him without touching flesh. He caught Satanus' descending wrist once more mid-strike and redirected the blade into the stone at his side, carving a molten trench through the altar.
Blaze's knee drove toward his ribs.
Arthur caught that too. he smiled.
"Hardly."
Violet lightning erupted outward from his body in a violent pulse.
Both demons were hurled back across the altar, skidding through crimson-lit dust.
Arthur rolled his shoulders once.
"If the Morningstar stood here," he continued calmly, "that would be a challenge."
Blaze's flames flared brighter at that.
Satanus rose slowly, brushing debris from himself. Then he laughed.
"You believe you could contend with the Morningstar?" he asked, genuine amusement through his voice. "With him?"
Arthur blurred.
The crack of impact echoed a split second later.
His boot connected cleanly with Satanus' face, snapping the demon's head sideways and sending him crashing through a pillar. Stone disintegrated in a plume of debris.
Arthur landed lightly where Satanus had stood.
"It does not concern me what you believe," he said evenly.
Blaze roared and attacked again, both hands igniting with twin spirals of white-hot hellfire. She hammered at him relentlessly, forcing him back step by step across the glowing altar.
"You think you're above us?! A mere man?!" she spat between strikes.
Arthur deflected one punch, slipped another, then countered with the butt of his spear to her sternum. The impact detonated in a burst of violet thunder, launching her skyward before she flipped and landed on her feet, carving molten trenches where she slid.
He glanced between them.
"And let me guess," he said dryly, adjusting his grip. "You two share your mother's dream of abandoning this charming wasteland?"
Blaze's eyes burned brighter.
"That is Mother's desire," she snapped. "Not ours."
Satanus stepped from the settling dust, blood trailing faintly from the corner of his mouth, though he was smiling.
"We belong here," he said, voice steady and proud. "This realm is ours by right."
Blaze's wings of flame unfurled behind her in blazing arcs.
"The true sovereigns of Hell do not flee it."
Arthur stared at them for a long moment.
Then he sighed.
Long. Tired.
"I am profoundly weary of speeches about who deserves to rule this shit hole."
The sky answered him.
The violet lightning that had been crawling overhead converged into a single spiraling vortex directly above Arthur's position. The shadows at his feet erupted outward like a wave of dark energy.
Blaze and Satanus reacted instantly.
Blaze shot forward again, engulfed in a cyclone of inferno, intending to overwhelm him before the storm completed.
Satanus dissolved into pure darkness, vanishing from sight entirely.
Arthur planted the butt of his spear against the altar.
"Then let's end this."
