"Where is your backpack?" she asked, ready to give instructions to her young friend.
Having attended every strategy meeting chaired by "fat-faced" Nelson, she knew the battle plan like the back of her hand.
Hannibal Island was a dormant volcanic island. This was normal, but what made it particularly unique were the underwater currents that forced seawater through the volcanic chambers, causing the island to constantly "spew" seawater.
The vent of this eruption was located right next to the city's port, so while ground forces were capturing pirates on the island, the Victory and the Frontier would be stationed at the port, ready to destroy any pirate ships that tried to escape.
What made this invasion unique, according to the chubby Nelson, was that the Beetle Borers would be stationed on the Victory and would only engage in combat if there was serious resistance from the pirates.
One flare required support from dedicated operators, who, thanks to their Pulse Boots, could quickly climb the city's mountainous terrain.
Two signal rockets meant a gradual retreat and a call for one of the lieutenants, which in this operation was either Rance or Fia.
Three flares signaled the greatest danger and demanded a complete retreat. In that case, the only option was to wait until Bill personally resolved the situation.
But Yoko knew for sure that this final signal wouldn't be needed, since Bill and the bounty hunter were planning to infiltrate the island and arrest the traitorous marine Gaspard at the same time as the ground invasion began.
With these thoughts in mind, Yoko was about to tell Akis what to do when he replied, "I don't need a backpack. I'll stay on the Victory and help the mortar crews."
Yoko nodded, thinking it was a good idea. Akisu was smart and could show courage, but letting an eleven-year-old fight wasn't Bill's style.
"Bill probably just told him that so as not to offend him," she thought approvingly, but before she could answer, a large shadow appeared next to her.
She turned her head and smiled.
"Bill!" she exclaimed excitedly, ready to carry out the task.
All her doubts were dispelled when he came over, placed his large hand on her head and adjusted her Marine cap.
"I'm glad to see you're double-checking your gear. It could save you a lot of trouble in the future," he said calmly.
Of course, she knew this before he said it, but she readily agreed and replied, "I thought so!" And then, showing him how she had packed her backpack, she received praise again.
After that, Yoko felt great and asked, "Which squad am I assigned to? I was thinking of going with the one moving along the canal, so the Boss would have more room to maneuver."
Seeing Bill nod and smile slightly, instead of feeling happy, she was suddenly overcome by the thought that he would say no. She tried to shake the thought, but he spoke first: "That's a good idea, but for the plan to work, we need you and Boss to stay on the Victory."
"What?" she said involuntarily, but he continued, "If the cannons miss any ships, we'll need Boss to sink them. Besides, your assistance with the mortar crews will speed up their firepower."
"F...f..." she began to stutter, and at that moment her thoughts were again transported to the Island of Mechanisms... and to the Little Eastern Blue.
"F...f..." she began again, and then exploded: "But this is not fair!"
"Bill! You can't do this!" she screamed, stamping her feet and clenching her teeth as tears began to form in her eyes. "I have Boss to back me up! I'm faster and stronger than almost everyone else... you... you can't do this to me!"
By this time she was already screaming, not caring who might hear, and her eyes filled with tears.
She remembered being sent away the last time she saw her father and being told to wait with Miyagi.
But she trained so hard for so long. She didn't go out to play like the other kids, like Akisu; she spent every day training with the operators or being around Boss. She worked so hard for this.
When she didn't hear a response from Bill, she said the first thing that came to her mind: "This... this isn't fair!"
Looking at the girl in front of him, Bill wanted to tell her that justice wasn't a word to throw around when you didn't get what you wanted, but seeing how much Yoko was truly looking forward to going on the mission, he couldn't be too stern and instead said,
"Don't make a scene, just listen." As he said this, Yoko seemed to remember something and turned slightly toward Akis, but he ignored it and continued, "The boss is to remain on the ship and guard the harbor from any pirates who try to escape, and I order you to stay and re..."
But before he could finish, the thirteen-year-old girl turned and ran down the stairs leading to the women's cabins.
