Chapter 386 - Black Spine Mountains: Lessons of Survival

The lizard's golden eyes remained fixed on the crude map scratched into the cave floor.

Five circles.

Five Demon Kings.

For a moment, he simply studied them.

Then he spoke calmly.

"I'm not going to kill them."

The fox's ears twitched slightly.

The lizard continued.

"Not yet."

His tail shifted slowly across the stone.

"I'm still in the **Foundation Establishment realm**."

His tail moved deliberately, tracing a slow path across the floor.

"I'm not strong enough to take on a Golden Core."

He lifted his head slightly, golden eyes steady.

"The only reason I nearly killed the one I fought…"

"…was because he underestimated me."

The memory of that battle hung in the air.

The poisoned cultivator.

The corpse puppet.

The desperate escape.

The lizard's voice remained even.

"But fighting a Golden Core who's actually trying to kill me…"

He looked back at the circles.

"…would be an entirely different situation."

The fox listened quietly, then chuckled softly.

"Good."

She leaned slightly to the side, clearly amused.

"At least you're not completely reckless."

Her tail swayed slowly behind her.

"But it's not just that."

Her turquoise eyes sharpened as she continued.

"You're not supposed to even *think* about engaging a Golden Core demonic beast."

She tapped the circle representing the Demon Kings with her claw.

"The moment you encounter one…"

"…you run."

The cave fell quiet for a second, then she added more seriously:

"And I mean **immediately**."

The lizard didn't reply.

The fox continued.

"You're comparing them to the Golden Core cultivator we fought."

She shook her head.

"That's not the same thing."

Her gaze returned to the crude map.

"A Golden Core demonic beast is far stronger than a human cultivator at the same realm."

Her voice lowered slightly.

"Much stronger."

The lizard's eyes flickered faintly as she leaned back to explain further.

"Most demonic beasts that reach Golden Core gain the ability to take **human form**."

"They become what cultivators call **spirit beasts**."

Her tail flicked once.

"And that's when they become truly terrifying."

"They can assume **human form**."

"And more importantly…"

Her turquoise eyes gleamed.

"…they can cultivate **human techniques**."

The cave grew quiet again.

"That means a Golden Core Demon King has…"

She counted lightly on her paw.

"A demonic beast's body."

"A Golden Core cultivation base."

"And human combat techniques."

Her tail flicked again, voice lowering slightly.

"They already have monstrous bodies, powerful bloodlines, and natural instincts."

She paused.

"Now imagine that creature also mastering **human cultivation techniques**."

The fox gave the lizard a sideways look.

"Formations."

"Movement techniques."

"Combat arts."

She shook her head slowly.

"That's why Demon Kings are feared."

Her eyes moved back to the crude map.

"A Golden Core human cultivator fighting a Demon King…"

"…usually dies."

She glanced back at the small lizard.

"So if you ever sense one nearby—"

Her voice became firm.

"—you run."

Her expression turned very serious.

"…Don't try anything clever."

"Don't test them."

"Don't provoke them."

Her ears lowered slightly.

"Just run."

The cave became quiet again.

The lizard stared at the map for several seconds, then his golden eyes slowly dimmed.

"…I understand."

The fox nodded with satisfaction.

"Good."

Her tail curled around her paws.

"Because I'd really prefer not to get eaten by a Demon King just because you decided to experiment."

She yawned slightly.

"But for now…"

Her turquoise eyes gleamed again.

"…there are plenty of **Foundation Establishment beasts** in these mountains."

Her gaze shifted toward the cave entrance.

"And those are perfect prey for you."

The lizard didn't reply, but the faint glow in his golden eyes returned.

The cave remained quiet after their discussion of the Demon Kings.

Dust from the fox's crude map still lingered faintly across the stone floor.

The fox stretched again, tail curling lazily beside her before her turquoise eyes settled back on the lizard.

"Still," she said calmly, "there *is* one advantage you have."

The lizard's golden eyes lifted toward her.

The fox flicked her tail.

"Your invisibility."

Her voice carried a note of approval.

"From **Foundation Establishment and below**, almost no one can sense you once you turn invisible."

She tilted her head slightly.

"And even if they notice something strange…"

Her lips curled faintly.

"…there's almost no one at that level who could defeat you anyway."

The lizard said nothing, but his tail moved once across the ground.

The fox's expression slowly grew more serious.

"But."

Her ears angled forward.

"If somehow you *do* end up crossing paths with a **Golden Core**…"

Her gaze sharpened slightly.

"…and you escape."

The cave grew quieter.

"Do **not** come back here immediately."

The lizard looked at her.

The fox's voice was firm now.

"If someone that strong starts chasing you…"

"…and you lead them straight back here…"

She tapped the cave floor once with her paw.

"…then both of us die."

The words were spoken plainly.

No joking.

No exaggeration.

Just simple truth.

Her tail flicked once.

"So if that happens…"

She continued.

"Run in a different direction."

"Change paths."

"Circle through the mountains."

"Shake them off first."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Only come back when you're sure no one is following you."

The cave fell silent again.

The lizard watched her for several seconds.

Then he nodded once.

"I understand."

The fox relaxed slightly after hearing that.

"Good."

She leaned back and rested her chin on her paws again.

"I'd rather not die because my partner brought a **Golden Core monster** home as a guest."

Her tail swayed lazily behind her once more.

The lizard turned his head slightly toward the cave entrance.

Outside, the distant forest rustled softly under the night wind.

His golden eyes glowed faintly in the darkness.
