Bullets were loaded, and the bolt of his rifle made a loud rattle of noise, followed by shouts of "the Liberation Army treats POWs kindly." According to his own account, he truly prepared himself for death at that moment, having watched too many Hollywood blockbusters and thinking that spies are equipped with 800 different weapons, capable of killing with a mere glance.
The process isn't important, but the result is that the new recruit ended up being awarded the First-class Merit, and his career path smoothed out from there.
