Chapter 39 - Caryatid

Renna stood at the base of a large monument one of the Atlas of old, a god of a man carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. It was a pity how even a god could only carry one world on his shoulder, while Renna carried several. She doubted, of course, that she could literally carry worlds on her shoulders, but the thought was mute anyway. It didn't matter that the world was not upon her back at this moment, the weight of responsibility was enough to keep her grounded. She found it funny that he always wanted to meet here. As if sensing her thoughts, a figure emerged from the shadows below the monument as Renna came closer.

"Well, what has the Captain brought us today?" He said as his tall figure towered over Renna. She noted he was slouching a bit to meet her gaze easier. He was a Rai Kiri, an Amphobos to be specific. They were the ones who lived in the underwater caverns on their home planet of Rai Jura. As an Amphobos, he was not used to the exposure of the sun, and had to keep on wrappings to protect his skin from the harsh rays. His skin nearly translucent, but firmly blue in the light around them.

"News about the front, General Reijo." Renna held a fist to her other bicep then dropped her hand to her side in a firm salute, but one that was half-hearted. He saluted back, matching her lackadaisical energy. "Let's get out of this sun first, General."

"Ever so considerate, Captain. This is why I like working with you." They walked a few paces to the shadow of Atlas. They spoke openily, as the monument was located on a lonely cliffside away from civilization. There were no prying eyes or ears. "So, the news?"

"The seed has been planted like you asked. They suspect Nocturne." Renna said kicking a rock from the monument off of the cliffside. "But why this was the favor you asked, I have yet to know."

"All in due time, Captain." He said slumping against the foot of the monument and laying down. "Just know that I am very grateful, and so are my people."

"Reijo…" Renna said her voice lowering dangerously. "This could have cost me my position in the Lineage. I think I deserve some sort of explanation."

"I can't betray my confidant, Renna. They're…an old friend."

"Then from one old friend to another, take care who your confidants are." Renna moved to leave, but Reijo stopped her.

"I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important… and that thing you asked for in return…it's done." He said slinking up from his position, taking out a a data-holo and handing it to Renna. She took it, glanced at it, and committed it to memory before crushing the small device in her hand and tossing it over the cliff. She watched it fall as far as she could before turning back to Reijo.

"You still owe me many favors, Reijo."

"And you are such a sweet one to be owed a debt, Renna. 'Til next time." Renna this time left without looking back and boarded her single-pilot ship. She took off, savoring the feeling of one weight being left on the planet, but with one nagging thought. He's up to something. She thought, And it can't be good.
