Chapter 279 - CH: 279 Kindergarten level?

{Chapter: 279 Kindergarten level?}

Ge Yuanshan didn't overthink it and spoke with enthusiasm, "Young man, your knowledge of calligraphy is quite impressive. Judging by that, I bet your handwriting must be exceptional too. I've already prepared brushes, ink sticks, paper, and inkstones—come and try them out if you're interested."

He added with a chuckle, "If you ever find it challenging, I wouldn't mind offering a few pointers. I'm not trying to brag, but I started practicing calligraphy when I was just seven years old. I've spent more than half of my life immersed in this art. These days, a lot of people ask me to write inscriptions for them, but to be honest, I rarely agree. Still, I'm always happy to guide young people who truly appreciate the craft."

Lin Yuan knew that Ge Yuanshan wasn't boasting—if anything, he was being modest. Despite his humble tone, his reputation in the world of calligraphy was as solid as a stone tablet in the heart of Kyushu.

In fact, Ge Yuanshan's name carried considerable weight across the region. Many enthusiasts and scholars had lined up hoping to get his advice or a personal inscription, but he usually ignored such requests. Not out of arrogance, and certainly not because of financial reasons. He simply had high standards—he sought genuine passion in those he taught.

But in Lin Yuan, he saw that spark.

A young man with a sharp mind, an insightful eye, and a humble attitude—Ge Yuanshan found it refreshing.

However, Lin Yuan wasn't particularly excited about receiving instruction.

Though he respected the elder's skill, Lin Yuan's own calligraphy had already reached an advanced level, bordering on professional mastery. There was very little he could actually learn from anyone at this point, even from someone as reputable as Ge Yuanshan.

Moreover, Lin Yuan didn't particularly love calligraphy.

He didn't dislike it either, but his pursuit of it wasn't born from artistic passion. No, his reasons were far more pragmatic… and romantic.

He was, after all, chasing after the affections of certain key women in the overarching plot of life—women who just so happened to adore calligraphy.

At this moment, Chi Qian and Yu Shanshan were still admiring the various calligraphy scrolls and ancient brushwork on display nearby.

With a gentle smile, Lin Yuan declined politely. "Old Master Ge, I'll take a closer look in a little while. For now, I'd like to accompany my friends and enjoy the beautiful pieces in your collection."

Ge Yuanshan wasn't offended in the slightest. In fact, he seemed even more pleased by Lin Yuan's respectful tone.

He turned his head slightly, noticing Chi Qian and Yu Shanshan nearby. Nodding knowingly, he said, "Alright, come find me when you're free. I'll be waiting."

With that, Ge Yuanshan turned and walked away at a calm pace.

Several onlookers in the exhibition hall were taken aback. They had known Ge Yuanshan to be a bit stern—his patience with young people, especially arrogant ones, was notoriously short. Yet just now, he had spoken so kindly to Lin Yuan, even after being gently refused. It was baffling.

Chi Qian and Yu Shanshan were also stunned.

Yu Shanshan blinked rapidly and leaned toward Lin Yuan. "Wow! Cousin, I didn't understand a single thing you were talking about earlier, but that old man totally got it! It's like you two were speaking some secret language. I think he really likes you!"

Chi Qian chuckled softly and added with admiration, "The old master merely confirmed Brother Lin Yuan's deep understanding of the art. Brother Lin truly has unique and insightful views on calligraphy. It's quite rare, and honestly, very impressive."

Lin Yuan responded modestly, smiling. "Qian Qian, you know quite a bit yourself. Don't sell yourself short."

Chi Qian smiled back, pleased with the compliment, a faint glow of pride in her eyes.

Then came Yu Shanshan's voice again, louder and more playful. "Hey! What about me? I asked questions too! Don't leave me out!"

Lin Yuan turned to her, smirking. "Shanshan, you also know a lot—right around the kindergarten level."

"You—!" Yu Shanshan's cheeks puffed with frustration, and she looked like she might hit him with a rolled-up scroll. "You're lucky we're in a museum!"

"Come on," Lin Yuan said with a laugh. "Let's continue looking around."

The trio moved on through the hall.

As they walked, Lin Yuan and Chi Qian continued their discussion, exchanging thoughts on brush techniques, stroke rhythm, and the historical significance of certain styles. Their dialogue was fluid and intelligent, the kind of back-and-forth that came from mutual respect and shared understanding.

Yu Shanshan, however, quickly grew bored.

She could appreciate a beautiful painting or an intricate carving, but the rows of old scrolls and plaques with rigid characters didn't capture her interest in the slightest.

Moreover, there weren't many other young people present—certainly not any interesting boys or girls to flirt with. The hall was mostly filled with elderly enthusiasts, teachers, and a few serious students.

Yu Shanshan regretted tagging along. She felt like a third wheel, or worse, an unwanted side character in someone else's romantic subplot.

"I should be spending time with my fan club," she muttered under her breath, pouting.

The calligraphy exhibition hall wasn't small by any means. It had multiple sections, each featuring various dynasties, schools, and artistic movements. Yet, in just over half an hour, Lin Yuan and Chi Qian had toured every piece, discussing and analyzing along the way.

Their little scholarly tour came to an end, leaving them with a subtle sense of satisfaction.

Yu Shanshan, on the other hand, was just glad it was over.

The trio eventually reached the far end of the calligraphy exhibition hall. Just before the exit, they noticed a large crowd had gathered, their attention clearly focused on something up ahead.

Yu Shanshan, ever the energetic one who thrived on excitement and lively scenes, immediately pulled Lin Yuan and Chi Qian forward. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Let's go! Something's happening over there!"

As they squeezed through the crowd, they discovered that a special event had been set up within the exhibition itself—a live calligraphy showcase where anyone brave enough could demonstrate their skills.

After all, this was a prestigious calligraphy exhibition, so it wasn't surprising to see many calligraphy lovers and enthusiasts gathered, eager to participate or watch.

At the front of the crowd, three large tables stood elevated on a platform. Each table was neatly arranged with the essential tools of the trade: calligraphy brushes of varying sizes, inkstones filled with freshly ground ink, fine paper, and ink slabs. Even traditional paperweights and brush rests had been carefully laid out. It was a traditionalist's paradise, meticulously prepared for anyone serious about the art of calligraphy.

Next to each station was a scroll stand prepared to hang completed works. The best among them would be proudly displayed throughout the remainder of the exhibition, judged and selected by the organizers once the event concluded.

But what drew even more attention was the handwritten announcement nearby.

It stated that this segment of the event was organized by none other than Ge Yuanshan himself—a legendary figure in the calligraphy world. More importantly, it noted that Ge Yuanshan was offering to personally purchase any outstanding works at generous prices to add to his private collection. It was a chance for aspiring artists to be recognized—and perhaps even discovered—by a master.

As Lin Yuan, Chi Qian, and Yu Shanshan made their way closer, their presence didn't go unnoticed.

Handsome, poised, and radiating elegance, Lin Yuan immediately drew glances from passersby. Chi Qian, with her graceful demeanor and serene beauty, stood out in the crowd like a quiet flower in bloom. Even the lively and bright Yu Shanshan added a burst of cheerful energy to the trio. Their collective charm and attractive appearances naturally attracted attention wherever they went.

Among the many pairs of eyes on them, Ge Yuanshan was one of the first to recognize Lin Yuan. A knowing smile crept across the old man's face. He gave Lin Yuan a subtle nod—a silent invitation, a reminder of the earlier conversation. He was still offering him the opportunity to come forward, showcase his skill, and receive some personal pointers.

Lin Yuan understood the meaning immediately.

Ge Yuanshan was inviting him, once again, to step forward and write. There was an unspoken understanding between them. In fact, Ge Yuanshan's attitude had become increasingly favorable toward Lin Yuan, even nurturing. The old calligrapher was already considering the possibility of taking Lin Yuan under his wing as a student.

Though he had spent a lifetime mastering the art of calligraphy and had shared some of his knowledge with his granddaughter, Ge Yuanshan had never been particularly interested in taking on apprentices. Yet Lin Yuan seemed different—he had potential, talent, and a certain calm confidence. If his writing met expectations, Ge Yuanshan was more than willing to make an exception.

But Lin Yuan wasn't in any rush. He returned the nod with a calm smile and chose to remain where he was, observing for the time being.

Yu Shanshan, who was originally a little disappointed to find that the event was calligraphy-related rather than something more action-packed, quickly got excited again when she realized Lin Yuan might be participating.

She tugged at his sleeve and practically bounced with anticipation. "Cousin! Didn't you say you're good at calligraphy? Go up and show everyone! I've never really seen you write anything serious before!"

Then she paused, blinking. "Wait… I have seen you scribble something years ago. But to me, it all looked like ghost symbols. Have you been practicing secretly without telling me? Come on! Let me see what you've got!"

Her voice was filled with playful challenge as she grabbed Lin Yuan's hand and tried to drag him forward. Turning toward Chi Qian, she added with exaggerated excitement, "Qian Qian, don't you want to see Brother Lin's amazing calligraphy? I bet he's secretly a master or something!"

Amused, Lin Yuan didn't resist Yu Shanshan's dramatic antics. He was already used to her grabbing his arm and making a scene in public.

But before Lin Yuan could say anything, Chi Qian's gentle voice interjected. "Actually… true calligraphy places great importance on the artist's state of mind. It emphasizes spontaneity and sincerity. Only when the writer is truly willing and inspired can they create something beautiful. Forcing someone won't lead to good results."

Her words were thoughtful, full of quiet wisdom. And while she hadn't scolded Yu Shanshan outright, her meaning was clear.

Feeling suddenly called out, Yu Shanshan fell silent, pouting as she crossed her arms.

Lin Yuan, however, wasn't surprised. He knew that Chi Qian understood these kinds of things very well. She had always been composed and insightful.

What did surprise him, though, was what Chi Qian said next.

With a slight smile tugging at the corner of her lips, she turned toward the stage and said softly, "Actually, I'm a little interested in writing today. Since inspiration has struck… let me go and write something instead."

Yu Shanshan blinked, stunned. "Huh?! You?"

Even Lin Yuan was taken aback. Chi Qian had always been modest and rarely sought the spotlight.

But now, with poise and confidence, she was stepping forward—ready to display her skills for the world to see.
