Battle or retreat, for Giles and the others at this moment, there wasn't much difference. Despite White Wolf having already broken through the Alliance Army's besiegement, they had no idea how many enemies were still down the road. The troops that had just fled were reorganized and quickly formed a new encirclement. Even though this encirclement was only partially formed, it put immense pressure on Giles and his group.
Retreating only meant returning to the city, where they would still have to fight, just with added protection. The current situation wasn't much different, as an internal traitor had delayed them earlier, slowing their pace significantly. Even if they attempted to retreat now, they would soon be caught by the Alliance Army.
