Losing Money to Become a Tycoon: Starting with Games
Chapter 337: Sharing Some Job-Hunting Experience
After hanging up the phone, Zhang Wei couldn't help but feel emotional.
Although he hadn't been a counselor for very long, he had already heard of and encountered many exceptionally outstanding students.
For example, students who completed all their university credits in just two or three years, wrote programs that were included in school textbooks, and took on key roles in major companies, responsible for critical work;
Those who represented the country multiple times during university and won major national chess championships;
Those devoted to scientific research, publishing multiple academic papers and obtaining several patent authorizations;
Those who sponsored many underprivileged students and were deeply committed to public welfare;
Those who won multiple international design awards and received early offers from large domestic companies;
And even those who, when facing danger, bravely seized a cleaver from a criminal…
Universities are, by nature, places filled with talent. As one of the nation's key universities, Handong University produced outstanding students year after year.
In such an environment, it was easy for many ordinary students to develop psychological issues.
In high school, everyone had been a genius within their own class. But once they entered university, they discovered that everyone around them seemed to be better than themselves. For students with more fragile mindsets, it was hard to bear this kind of blow.
Therefore, for Zhang Wei, no matter how outstanding a student under his supervision might be, he was rarely surprised.
But someone like Pei Qian—who quietly founded a company during his freshman year, then silently ran it for more than a year and ended up with such an astonishing scale—that was truly absurd, completely beyond Zhang Wei's imagination and utterly overturning his common sense.
What was even more admirable was that this student of his was neither ostentatious nor boastful. The very first thing he did after making money was to take out a massive sum of five million yuan for charity, helping those students at the university who were struggling financially.
It was genuinely worthy of respect.
Zhang Wei planned to write a report to the college leadership and then submit it to the university administration. For something so beneficial to impoverished students, the school would certainly cooperate fully and provide strong support.
…
With the five million yuan allocated, there was no need to worry about spending during this cycle anymore.
In fact, Pei Qian could have waited until the very end of the settlement cycle to spend the five million. That might have achieved an even stronger last-minute spending effect.
But after thinking it over, Pei Qian felt that this five million yuan could genuinely change the living conditions of many students in difficulty. Donating it one day earlier might mean those students could have one more full meal.
So it was best to let the money take effect as soon as possible. Donating it shortly after the cycle began was the optimal choice.
After lunch, Pei Qian went to the company.
First, he informed Assistant Xin about coordinating the donation with the school. When the time came, Assistant Xin could handle the liaison with the relevant university departments.
Pei Qian just wanted to ensure that the money would be quietly transferred to each needy student's campus card. He didn't want to make a big fuss about it, so there was no need for complicated procedures, he could simply leave it to Assistant Xin.
After that, Pei Qian went to the Human Resources Department to check on the Tengda recruitment exam.
Originally, recruitment was scheduled to take place every year in May and November. But since this year was the first recruitment, time was tight. It was already November 22nd, and various recruitment tasks had not yet been fully completed.
However, within another week or so, it should be more or less ready, and there was hope that the formal recruitment exam could be held next week.
Pei Qian confirmed the preparation status of the recruitment exam with Hao Yun and added two more points along the way.
First, the grading of the recruitment exams would involve hiring graduate students from Handong University to help. These people would be the main workforce. However, the leaders of each grading group definitely had to be Tengda employees, to prevent any possibility of cheating.
The Human Resources Department would need to properly coordinate this aspect of the work.
Second, although Tengda theoretically required everyone to pass the exam to be hired, as the boss, Pei Qian naturally had the authority to bypass all procedures and directly recruit people. This special "boss direct hire" channel absolutely had to be reserved.
He also took another walk around and checked on the situation of the various project teams.
At present, GOG is still in its early development stage. Most of the work was still stuck at the design document level, so there wasn't much to see yet.
Tasks such as purchasing character IPs and creating original character concept art were also relatively scattered, with nothing particularly noteworthy.
Pei Qian did, however, deliberately pay attention to Bao Xu's condition.
It seemed that although Bao Xu's hair was growing thicker and thicker, his enthusiasm for work was steadily declining. Pei Qian sneaked a few glances at him and only ever saw him playing games, he never once saw him writing documents or tweaking the editor. This was undoubtedly a good sign.
"Mm, looks like Bao Xu has truly turned over a new leaf. The travel therapy has had remarkable results."
Pei Qian was very satisfied.
The next Best Employee Selection Process would be on February 1st. He wondered who would take over the baton from Bao Xu and win the grand prize of traveling around the world.
Pei Qian realized that his level of concern for the second-place Best Employee had already surpassed that for first place…
That said, the next Best Employee Selection Process would need some adjustments.
In the past, the selection had been limited to the Tengda Games department. As a result, the first person eliminated was almost always the lead executive designer from Tengda Games.
This was quite normal. After all, the lead executive designer bore the most responsibility and workload in the game department and appeared to contribute the most in the eyes of other employees, naturally making it the most dangerous position.
After some thought, Pei Qian decided that this wouldn't do.
It wasn't that he felt sorry for those lead executive designers. The key issue was that he had already taken down batch after batch of lead executive designers, yet there was still no improvement at all!
At present, the Tengda Group had begun to blossom on multiple fronts. It was no longer solely propped up by the game department like before.
And from President Pei's perspective, this situation could roughly be described as "fires breaking out on all fronts."
Since that was the case, the Best Employee Selection Process should definitely be expanded to cover the entire Tengda Group, including its other businesses. Best Employees from those divisions should also be included in the selection.
After thinking it over, Pei Qian decided to simply create an internal vote on the TPDb website. On the day of the Best Employee Selection Process, he would send out a notification to everyone in the departments, and the system would automatically generate the results.
While he was thinking about this, Pei Qian received a message from Zhu Xiaoce.
"President Pei, the actors' costume photos are ready. Please take a look."
"Lu Zhiyao's costume photos might be a bit too handsome. Could that clash with his character setting? Should we make him uglier, more haggard?"
Several photos were attached below.
The first one was Zhang Zuting.
He was wearing a flamboyant, highly futuristic-looking costume, with a confident smile on his face. It was as though the words "successful person" were written all over him, though there was also a hint of slyness in his expression.
The second photo was of Lu Zhiyao.
His costume looked far more plain. The entire outfit was in a single gray-and-white color scheme, overly simple in style, so much so that it could even be described as shabby.
Although both of them were playing people from the future, Zhang Zuting's role was that of a judge, a bona fide wealthy man, so his clothing naturally had to reflect that.
Lu Zhiyao, on the other hand, played the male lead, who was just a poor nobody and could only afford the simplest clothes.
However, even though the outfit looked overly simple and even shabby, it still couldn't hide Lu Zhiyao's handsomeness.
It was clear that the makeup artist hadn't done much to embellish Lu Zhiyao. But because he was already extremely good-looking to begin with, even without special makeup or retouching—and even in clothes that couldn't be called handsome—his looks were still impossible to conceal.
After thinking for a moment, Pei Qian replied, "This is fine."
He was afraid that deliberately making Lu Zhiyao look ugly with makeup might damage his "box office poison" attribute.
Continuing to scroll down, there were also the costume photos of the female lead.
Pei Qian had never seen this female lead before. She had a round face and big eyes, and when she smiled, two faint dimples appeared. Using a more fashionable term, she had the quintessential "first-love face."
Pei Qian searched her name, "Lin Ruyi," but couldn't find much information. It seemed she was most likely an unknown newcomer, perhaps without a single work to her name yet.
After looking through all the photos, Pei Qian felt that the film's overall work in terms of costumes, makeup, and props was quite good. It was clear that Zhu Xiaoce had put considerable effort into these aspects.
Pei Qian had originally felt a tiny bit worried, but on second thought, this film was meant to win through its story anyway. Even if the costumes, makeup, props, or even the special effects were a little better, at most it would just be exquisitely packaged poison, nothing to worry about.
…
…
November 25th, Thursday.
It happened to be Thanksgiving Day, and also the scheduled day for distributing benefits to underprivileged students.
The data on these students had been screened from the university's campus card system and verified by the school. All of them were students with relatively difficult living conditions.
The 500 yuan would be directly credited to their campus cards. There would be no fanfare, no announcements or publicity. Only when the students noticed that their card balance seemed off and went to ask the teacher at the campus card recharge office would they receive an explanation.
Inside Counselor Zhang Wei's office.
Zhang Wei handed Pei Qian a list. "This is the list of graduate students who have experience with grading papers. I've already spoken to them in advance."
"When the time comes, just have your people contact them directly."
"As for the compensation… there's really no need to pay 300 yuan per day. That rate is a bit too high."
"You've already donated five million yuan to the school, and these graduate students are basically your seniors. After hearing about this, they were all very moved, and many of them are even willing to help with grading for free."
Pei Qian quickly shook his head. "That won't do! Whatever the rate is supposed to be, that's what we have to pay. How could we 'take advantage of familiarity'?"
"Grading is exhausting work, it's high-intensity labor. How could I shortchange my own seniors?"
"All right, Teacher Zhang, if there's nothing else, I'll head off first."
Zhang Wei raised a hand. "No rush, no rush. President Pei, if you don't have anything urgent, sit here for a bit and let's chat."
Pei Qian: "…Teacher Zhang, please don't call me President Pei anymore. I really can't handle that."
Zhang Wei smiled. "All right, then I'll call you Pei Qian from now on."
"I've been thinking these past couple of days about organizing a special lecture for you."
Pei Qian was completely baffled. "A special lecture?"
"Teacher Zhang, please don't joke around. What could I possibly lecture on? I'd be satisfied if I can just avoid failing my courses this semester!"
Zhang Wei chuckled. "You are too modest! Pei Qian, modesty is a virtue, but too much modesty isn't a good thing."
"To build such a large company in just a little over a year, it's clear that you're a once-in-ten-thousand business genius!"
"You should know that many of your seniors in their fourth year, and even those in their third year of graduate school, are still worried about finding a job."
"Of course, your company has special recruitment procedures, so it wouldn't be appropriate for me to ask you to arrange jobs for these seniors. But wouldn't it be fine if you could take some time out of your busy schedule to give a lecture and share some job-hunting experience with them?"
Pei Qian was a bit speechless. "Job-hunting experience? Teacher Zhang, I've never even looked for a job, where would I get any job-hunting experience?"
Zhang Wei thought for a moment. "Oh, right. You started a business, you didn't look for a job. Then how about talking about your entrepreneurship experience instead?"
Pei Qian: "..."
The two of them looked at each other, falling into a wordless silence.
Pei Qian genuinely had no idea how he was supposed to give a talk like that.
What entrepreneurship experience was there to share?
Would he go on stage and say, 'Today I'm here to talk about my entrepreneurship experience. First of all, you need to obtain a system.'?
Was that even remotely reasonable?!
But after thinking it over, Pei Qian realized he really didn't have a good reason to refuse the request. He couldn't very well say that he was so busy he couldn't spare even one or two hours, could he?
So he could only consider it seriously. "I'll think about it some more. The main issue is that I'm really not that eloquent. If it really doesn't work out, I could have some of the key employees from my company come and give the talk instead, it would be the same."
Zhang Wei nodded. "That would work too. But it would be best if you could give the talk personally, it would be more convincing."
Pei Qian sneered inwardly. Convincing my ass…
