It was a voice she didn't recognize. The tone was deep and low, soaked in emotion, gentle, and full of regret. Her eyes widened slightly, and her hand froze mid-air. Who was this man? What was he doing in her mother-in-law's room?
Before she could think, her instincts kicked in. She pushed the door open and stepped into the room. It was dark. The curtains were drawn tightly shut, blocking out even the faintest glimmer of moonlight. No lamps were turned on, and the air felt thick and still.
