Cherreads

Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 - Guaranteed Success (rewritten)

...

"Who's the cute baby? Yes, you are."

Helga lifted my arms and wiggled them like I was some kind of puppet.

I wanted to scream.

At least I was close.

It had been about 6 months since my birth, and most of that time had been spent trapped in this stupid cot. I was starting to develop a personal grudge against it.

First thing I'm doing when I can walk properly?

Destroying it.

Anyway, I hadn't been completely useless. I'd spent most of my time going through the System, and after finally finishing all the reading, it actually started to make sense. Though seriously, whoever designed that guide needs to be fired!

Though there were some interesting procedures in place.

If I pulled something like a Rasengan, I'd automatically get chakra to use it. If I got a Zanpakuto, I'd gain spiritual pressure alongside it.

Which meant one thing.

The higher the rarity of a roll, the more likely I am to gain additional benefits to actually use the thing.

"Fin?" Helga's voice cut through my thoughts. "You're such a clever baby, aren't you?"

I stuck my tongue out and blew the most aggressive raspberry I could manage.

Helga froze for a second before chuckling.

Agatha then walked into the room, and my head snapped to her. I scrunched my face, crossed my eyes. Agatha then lost it.

Heh, adults were way too easy.

[ Achievement Complete ]

→ Make an adult laugh: +200 PP

Checking the window now, my total was at 240 PP. Before you say anything, forty of those points came from my first shit.

Yes.

That was an achievement.

No, I don't want to talk about it. Flicking to the rolls tab, presenting me with the two roll options.

[ Options Available ]

→ Normal Roll: 100 PP

→ Guaranteed Rare/Mythical: 1000 PP

If I could farm achievements like this, then I could circumvent that limit on Point Gains, as mentioned previously, but the problem was that Achievements weren't being swapped with new ones, so it wasn't like he had a consistent way to get the points.

It would reach a point where I'd get very few points.

...

Being a baby is harder than it looks. For the next few weeks, I focused on two achievements:

Walking and talking.

Both of which should've been easy in theory, I'd been doing both for my 18 years of existence.

In reality?

My body refused to cooperate, my legs were useless, my balance was nonexistent, and my mouth might as well have been disconnected from my brain.

At one point, I tried to say "water," but it came out as "waba."

All the while, Helga and Agatha were loving every second of it. Speaking of them, being a baby did also mean I could eavesdrop, and I learnt a little more about my situation.

Helga and I were living on a farm just outside a place called Amphail. About three days north of Waterdeep. There was no father around, just me and Helga. Agatha came by during the day to help me while Helga worked the farm.

At first, I thought farm life sounded terrible.

Farm = labour

Labour = achievements

Achievements = PP

...suddenly, I loved agriculture.

...

Two years later, and with 950 PP to my name.

That's where I was sitting after 2 years of grinding, but now came the problem I was worried about: the easy achievements were quickly running out.

No more "first this" or "first that."

I needed something new.

And then—

"Fin," Helga called out, "can you help me water the plants?"

[ Achievement Available ]

→ Help Water the Plants: +50 PP

Today, Helga was finally letting me work with her on the farm. Helga handed me a wooden bucket.

I stared at it.

Then at her. Then back at the bucket.

This thing was half my size, and yet she simply dropped down to me. She does know I'm only, like... two.

"Offf gorf," I said confidently.

She smiled. "That's my boy."

Close enough.

I waddled toward the well, filled the bucket with shaky arms, and nearly died trying to lift it. Step by step, I carried it over all the while water was sloshed everywhere.

I dumped whatever was left onto the plants.

Helga clapped.

"You did it, Fin!"

Yes! Praise me, woman!

[ Achievement Complete ]

→ Help Water the Plants: +50 PP

[PP Total - 1000]

Haha, I did it!

I then felt Helga pick me up and place me on her shoulders; she was still praising me on the watering, completely unaware that she had enabled my gambling addiction.

"You're such a good helper!"

Yes, I am.

Later that day.

I waddled into my room and shut the door behind me.

This was it. The big one.

I sat down, opening up the Rolls screen before pressing that big, beautiful button beneath the 1000PP roll...

[Rolling...]

DING!

[You have rolled...Sanji's Observation Haki]

"WOOOOO!"

I jumped onto my bed but immediately misjudged the distance and clipped the frame instead.

THUD!

Pain...

[ Achievement Unlocked ]

→ A New Level of Awareness: +100 PP

...worth it!

...

End of Chapter!

A/N: Not too many changes made, although I did make the restrictions a bit clearer as to Progression Points and how Fin gains them, since that was a main criticism of the previous version. Also, I removed the system's ability to stop time when Fin interacted with it; it didn't really make sense to keep it.
