Chapter 133 - Lab Rats

The morning light poured through the windows of Stark Tower, casting soft, golden rays across the room where Gwen Stacy sat at the kitchen counter, scrolling through her phone. After Wanda's midnight mind-control mission, Gwen's academic stress had melted away, but the gnawing curiosity about Dr. Octavia "Vee" Octavius lingered.

Just as Gwen was debating whether to head to campus, Peter Parker burst through the door, his usual mix of excitement and chaos trailing behind him.

"Gwen!" Peter practically shouted, waving a folder in the air. "You've got to come to the lab today. Vee's about to test something huge."

Gwen raised an eyebrow. "Huge like groundbreaking? Or huge like potentially catastrophic?"

Peter grinned, oblivious. "Why not both?"

Before Gwen could respond, Wanda, Jean, Storm, Natasha, and Talia entered the kitchen, each with a mug of coffee in hand, looking far too glamorous for a casual morning hangout.

"Did someone say catastrophic?" Wanda quipped, sliding into the seat next to Gwen. "Sounds like our kind of day."

"You didn't think we'd let you have all the fun, did you?" Jean added with a smirk.

Peter's eyes widened as he took in the group. "Uh… hi. Wow. You all look… great."

"Focus, Parker," Natasha said dryly, grabbing her coat. "Let's see what your mad scientist is cooking up."

The Empire State University Science Building loomed ahead as the group approached, their footsteps echoing through the marble hallways. When they entered the lab, Gwen's first impression was that organized chaos ruled here. Humming machinery, blinking lights, and a slight burnt smell filled the air.

In the middle of it all stood Dr. Octavia "Vee" Octavius—a tall woman with wild, curly hair, sharp eyes that gleamed with brilliance, and a lab coat that looked like it had seen better days. Her energy was infectious, but there was a wild edge to it, the kind that hinted at obsession.

Vee turned as they entered, her face lighting up with a bright smile. "Ah, Peter! And you must be Gwen Stacy." Her eyes flicked to the rest of the group, lingering a little longer on Wanda. "And friends. The more, the merrier."

Gwen stepped forward, shaking her hand. "Nice to meet you, Dr. Octavius."

"Please, call me Vee," she replied, her grin widening. "Science is messy, titles are overrated."

"You don't say," Wanda murmured, eyeing a nearby machine that looked one spark away from exploding.

Vee led them deeper into the lab, her enthusiasm practically vibrating off her as she launched into a passionate explanation of her latest project: fusion energy that could revolutionize power generation.

"Imagine a world where we're no longer reliant on fossil fuels," Vee said, her eyes gleaming. "Clean, limitless energy for everyone. We're standing at the precipice of a new era!"

Gwen nodded, impressed, but something about the equipment caught her eye. The energy signatures on some of the devices looked eerily familiar. The sleek metal and subtle vibranium-like patterns felt out of place in a college lab.

She leaned over to Wanda, whispering, "Does that look like Wakandan tech to you?"

Wanda's eyes narrowed as she studied the equipment. "It's not Wakandan, but it's close. We need to keep an eye on this."

Meanwhile, Vee continued explaining the experiment, completely unaware of the side conversation.

While Gwen and Wanda exchanged concerned glances, Peter was doing his best to act professional… and failing miserably.

"So, uh," Peter stammered, trying to focus on the fusion reactor but glancing at Jean, "do you guys always look this amazing while doing science?"

Jean raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Only when we know someone's watching."

Storm chuckled, sending a playful spark of electricity through Peter's laptop. The screen flickered before dying completely.

Peter yelped, scrambling to check his laptop. "Storm! That's not how you handle expensive equipment!"

"Relax, Parker," Natasha said with a smirk. "It's not like you were using it for anything important."

Talia leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching Peter with amusement. "It's impressive how you manage to be both adorable and a disaster at the same time."

Peter groaned, muttering under his breath. "I'm surrounded by superpowered comedians."

As the group gathered around the main console, Vee prepared to initiate the first phase of the fusion test. Her eyes gleamed with excitement, bordering on manic.

"This is it," Vee announced. "The future of energy. What could possibly go wrong?"

The room fell silent.

Wanda groaned, facepalming dramatically. "You did not just say that."

Vee blinked, confused. "Say what?"

"You never say that," Wanda said, shaking her head. "That's like raising a giant red flag that says 'disaster imminent.'"

Jean snickered. "Seriously, you might as well have summoned Murphy's Law himself."

Storm added, "If the lab explodes, I'm blaming you for jinxing it."

Vee laughed, waving them off. "Oh, come on. Science is all about risks."

Wanda exchanged a look with Gwen, her expression serious despite the laughter. "Yeah, well, I've seen enough to know that when someone says 'what could go wrong,' something always does."

As they left the lab, Gwen couldn't shake the uneasy feeling in her chest. Vee's passion was inspiring, but it was also dangerous. The familiar tech, the unstable energy, and the way Vee dismissed potential risks—it all felt like a ticking time bomb.

"Looks like we've got more to worry about than just school," Gwen muttered.

Wanda slipped her hand into Gwen's, her grip firm and reassuring. "Whatever it is, we'll handle it. But Gwen, that tech looks more military grade than something a civilian would possess, and in New York, you can only get something like that from a few places, and it's not the government."
