Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: And We’re Outta Here

The next day, i.e. 9 hours later, I awoke safe and sound once more.

Phew, I'm still alive... Thankfully.

Although confident in the current state of my defenses, which mainly consisted of a metric fuckton of proximity mines, I was nevertheless glad to be waking up again unharmed. Relieved, I required a couple of minutes to fully wake up and get my head in the game, so I laid atop my sunken cot, enjoying the peace and quiet whilst organising my game plan for today.

What do I need to do before I leave this bandit shithole... Well, I didn't loot all those nearby buildings I cleared prior to blowing up a sizable portion of the Headstone Mine, so why don't I start there and go loot those places for all they're worth before I make my way to Fyrestone. I mean, I know I won't be able to take absolutely everything I find with me, if the large amount of stuff I saw during my cleanup efforts is anything to go by, but I can at least gather the bits and bobs at a central location for me to wing by and grab at a later date.

Yeah, I think that sounds like a decent use of my time. I'm probably not going to be back at the Headstone Mine for at least a short while, so might as well scavenge what I can and get it stored away securely, else it might now be here upon my return. I did make a huge ruckus with my actions yesterday, so it wouldn't be odd for the surrounding bandit camps to come investigate what the hell happened here.

That aside, I made some massive gains from all that death and destruction I caused however many hours ago, so it's high time I spent the rewards I collected and used them to empower myself further for the journey ahead. I'm unsure of what type of difficulties and enemies I'll face out there, seeing how this isn't a game any longer, so I best make use of this opportunity to increase my capabilities as much as I feasibly can, otherwise I might not make it to Fyrestone in one piece… Or at all for that matter.

Finished making plans for the day, I brought up my system panel and navigated straight to the skill tree where I had 16 skill points waiting to be spent.

[ Brawn Skill Tree ]

| Hard to Kill | (5/5)

+4% Maximum Health and regenerate 0.1% of your Maximum Health per second per level.

| Incite | (5/5)

Taking damage gives +6% Movement Speed and +5% Reload Speed for a few seconds.

| Asbestos | (1/5)

-8% Negative Status Effect Duration per level.

| I'm the Juggernaut | (5/5)

Kill Skill. Killing an enemy gives you a +4% Damage Reduction for a short time.

| Ain't Got Time to Bleed | (5/5)

Whilst in your Gunzerking state, you will regenerate up to 0.8% of your Maximum Health per second per level depending on how low your health is.

| Fistful of Hurt | (1/1)

Throw a heavy punch, dealing massive damage and knockback. This ability has a cooldown of 15 seconds.

| Out of Bubblegum | (0/5)

Gain +7% Fire Rate per level when your shield is depleted.

| Bus That Can't Slow Down | (5/5)

+10% Movement Speed per level while Gunzerking.

| Just Got Real | (0/5)

Gain up to +8% Gun Damage per level depending on how low your health is.

| Sexual Tyrannosaurus | (0/5)

Taking damage gives +0.4% Health Regeneration per level for 5 seconds. This effect does not stack.

| Come At Me Bro | (1/1)

While Gunzerking, you can flip your enemies the bird, instantly healing you to full health, granting a massive damage reduction for a few seconds, and taunting them into attacking you.

Hmm, I don't have quite enough to complete the Brawn Skill Tree, but I'm not that far off either. Damn, if only I had 4 more points, I could've begun proceeding down the next skill tree.

Somewhat saddened by the fact that I couldn't start putting skill points into another skill tree just yet, I spent a few seconds stewing on the matter, but I didn't dwell on it forever and eventually moved on to the task at hand.

Haa, whatever. Thinking about it isn't going to do me any good, so what skills should I pour my 16 points into... Well, I was working on | Asbestos | last time, so let's fill that guy up before I begin looking at anything else... Okay, there, that should do it. Alright, now what should come next... | Sexual Tyrannosaurus | doesn't look like too bad of an option with the increase in health regeneration it provides anytime I'm damaged.

In all honesty, I could easily see that particular skill becoming a huge boon to me simply based on the regeneration aspect of it alone. I mean, anytime I get damaged, it should activate; hence, I should be able to cheese it and use it to my advantage. So, let's say I were to do some heavy lifting and training; that action is technically damaging the body, hence it should trigger its activation since I am damaging my bones, muscles, tendons and other parts of my body because of the exercise.

If all it requires for activation is for me to get damaged, then I should be able to use it in that manner. Such a hefty regenerative power would allow me to keep myself in tip-top shape practically 24/7, give me the ability to strengthen the many muscles across this massive frame I now possess, and improve both the durability and thickness of my bones as well as my tendons and improve whatever else gets affected.

That sort of regeneration would make it possible to achieve massive improvements in nearly every aspect of my physical abilities, probably to an inhuman degree. Putting it another way, it would be equivalent to injecting steroids with none of the demerits and possible side effects that come along with them since I would be relying entirely on my body's "natural" regeneration abilities.

On second thought, it would actually be far more potent than any steroid or performance-enhancing compound known to man because I would regenerate and repair any damage I would've sustained through extreme physical exertion in a matter of seconds. Combine that constant regeneration power with my already huge bruiser physique, and I can probably turn myself into something comparable to a space marine straight out of Warhammer 40K, and if not that, a Spartan out of Halo. I have the height and bone structure for it, so it shouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities.

Picturing myself abusing the fuck out of my body in the gym and pushing myself beyond safe limits that would no doubt produce lasting injuries to me under normal circumstances, I placed 5 skill points into the skill and maxed it out in an instant.

Now that I'm thinking of it, I can also stack it with | Insight | and proc the two of them at the same time... That is, if it works the way I hope it does. Anyways, I got 7 skill points left to spend, and out of the two skills available, | Out of Bubblegum | seems like the more useful one of the bunch simply because of the increase in fire rate I get when my shields get depleted. That's a lot safer to use compared to | Just Got Real | which requires me to get real low health wise to obtain its full effect.

With my mind made up, I dropped 5 points into | Out of Bubblegum | and the remaining 2 into | Just Got Real |. I then left the skill tree menu behind and went right to the badass section of my system.

This is where the real power-up is going to happen.

Staring at the 5,760 badass tokens I had sitting there, I transitioned from that large number and ran my eyes down the list of stats.

The question is, what do I want to improve... My survivability is already pretty decent considering the situations I've already survived. However, there will be plenty of threats I will have to face soon enough, thus it would be wise to up it even further. As for where I should start for that, well, one can never have too much health, so let's begin there.

Concluding that I wanted to up my chances of making it on Pandora just that extra bit more, I zoomed down the list and locked in on maximum health and placed a whopping 790 badass tokens into it, bringing my badass maximum health bonus to 80% and my true maximum health bonus to 100%.

[ Badass Tokens -790 ]

[ Maximum Health +79% ]

That was costly, but a whole 2x to my health and all its future gains is surely going to be worth it, though this more of my last line of defense because I'd rather rely on my shielding and armor instead of letting my body tank the brunt of the damage.

I thought as vigor slowly pumped through my veins, muscles, bones, and the entirety of my system. Loving the feeling I was experiencing, I enjoyed it while it lasted and after spending a minute or two relishing its effects, I once more turned my attention to the system panel that awaited me.

As tough as I feel right now, I know adding some extra beef on top is going to make me feel a whole hell of a lot safer, so I'm going to raise toughness to 100.

[ Badass Tokens -700 ]

[ Toughness +70 ]

The moment I was done allocating tokens to it, that same warm and comfortable sensation I experienced once before flooded my body and quickly reached every end of me, including the top of my head and the tips of my fingers and toes. This pleasurable sensation lasted magnitudes longer when compared to the first time I underwent this process, and as much as I wanted it to go on, it didn't, sadly. The cosy warmth I was happily enjoying didn't stay around forever and soon transitioned to an equally comfortable cooling sensation.

"Ahh, this could get addicting."

The cool sensations did their thing for a while, but it too didn't last, so once it had fizzled away, I turned my focus to the badass screen.

I'm tempted to go for another round of the toughness treatment, but I'm going to have to hold back on doing that... At least for the meantime since there are plenty of other areas that need an upgrade.

Using my willpower to the fullest, I kept myself in check and scanned the list of stats again, searching for the next area that required improvement. My scan of the list didn't go on for long because I eventually locked on to gun damage.

My damage output is pretty high, but not high enough to deal with that armored monstrosity that lies below in the mines with a traditional firearm. I want to explore the underground to my heart's content and, most importantly, get my hands on those shock crystals, so if I want to make that happen, I'm gonna have to have the ability to penetrate that big bastard's armor with my non-explosive weapons. So let's jack these numbers up.

[ Badass Tokens -900 ]

[ Gun Damage +90% ]

And while I'm at it, let's up gun accuracy some.

[ Badass Tokens -400 ]

[ Gun Accuracy +40% ]

Reload speed could use a bit of help as well.

[ Badass Tokens -265 ]

[ Reload Speed +26.5% ]

That should be good enough on that front for now. Time to circle back to attributes.

Intelligence is my lowest attribute, so I'm going to bring it up to par.

[ Badass Tokens -400 ]

[ Intelligence +40 ]

The instant I placed the last 10 tokens into it, the memories that had cleared up a good bit previously became crystal clear in the blink of an eye, allowing me to recall nearly every memory from my past life as if it had happened yesterday. Going along with that, my mind and various brain functions felt like they went from operating on an Intel Pentium processor to an AMD Threadripper.

Wow, that is a vast improvement...

Plenty impressed with my new brain gains, I spent a few moments considering my next move.

If I can get to the level where I can recall everything in solid detail, then I'll be able to quickly implement the technology I viewed in passing in my old world. I've read many books and watched numerous videos on various fields of engineering and science back when I was deciding what I wanted to pursue in life, so if I can recall everything with near or absolute clarity then I'll have a far easier time implementing those ideas I had before... I know I would likely be better off running with just this level of intelligence and putting points elsewhere, but let's see if we clear up these memories anymore than what they are now.

[ Badass Tokens -500 ]

[ Intelligence +50 ]

Draining another 500 tokens from my dwindling pool of badass tokens, I immediately noticed the improvement and found I could recall just about everything from memory, the only exception being those from when I was a toddler and younger.

The memories from those younger years are still fuzzy, but they have cleared up massively. And although there is still more room for further improvement in this area, I think being able to clearly picture those memories as if I'm looking at them right at this very moment is good enough. It's not quite at the level of photographic memory, but it's not that far off either.

Ecstatic about the upgrades to my brain, I once again turned my attention to the stat list.

I haven't given strength nor agility any love yet, so let me hook them up.

[ Badass Tokens -300 ]

[ Agility +30 ]

But I'll hold off on strength until it's the very last stat since I'll have to go through a good bit of pain to acquire those gains.

Okay, what should I do with the remaining 1,500 tokens, hmm...

Scanning the list rapidly, I soon began dumping badass tokens into ammunition space before adding some into both backpack space and grenade space. There wasn't a guarantee that I was going to find any more SDUs, so I wanted to expand my carrying capabilities and munition reserves as much as I reasonably could. I also had a ton of guns and other equipment to bring along, so I was going to need as much inventory space as I could get my hands on unless I wanted to make a bunch of trips back and forth from wherever I decided to settle from here.

[ Badass Tokens -100 ]

[ Ammunition Space +1,000 ]

[ Badass Tokens -65 ]

[ Grenade Space +13 ]

[ Badass Tokens -300 ]

[ Backpack Space +30 ]

After raising my storage capabilities by a satisfactory amount, I set my sights on my first line of defense and brought shield capacity and shield recharge rate up by 20%, and shield recharge delay down by 20%.

[ Badass Tokens -200 ]

[ Shield Capacity +20% ]

[ Badass Tokens -200 ]

[ Shield Recharge Rate +20% ]

[ Badass Tokens -200 ]

[ Shield Recharge Delay -20% ]

As for what to do with the remainder of the 140 tokens, I don't really have anywhere they need to go in particular, so I'll just toss them into grenade damage, which has yet to receive any real investment. I don't see myself dropping my grenade use anytime soon, if ever, because of their ubiquity here on Pandora and all the hella useful mod types available. Therefore, upping its damage should help in keeping this place secure while I'm gone and taking out some of the tougher foes I'll come across in the coming months.

[ Badass Tokens -140 ]

[ Grenade Damage +14% ]

When I had found a use for every last one of the tokens, I finally directed my vision to strength.

Now it's time to upgrade this bad boy with the 300 badass tokens I saved for it, but before I start the excruciating pain, how about a change of scenery.

Unwilling to undergo that sort of sweaty and painful experience on my bed, I transitioned from my sleeping quarters to the showers, plopped my bum on a bench and began allocating the points into strength 10 at a time.

[ Badass Tokens -100 ]

[ Strength +10 ]

*Urgh*

No pain, no gain.

Gritting my teeth, I put up with the lesser but still immense pain that was comparable to tens of thousands of fire ants chewing on my insides as well as my exterior. Luckily, the experience didn't drag on as long as it did the first go around, likely due to my stats being at a much higher level, so when it had come to a total stop I took a minute to breathe and went for another round of self torture.

[ Badass Tokens -100 ]

[ Strength +10 ]

This following strengthening session had its pain factor cut in half along with its duration and reduced what I was feeling to a burning pulse instead of the many fire ants I had crawling all across my frame in the previous rounds.

Just one more to go.

Covered in sweat from top to bottom, I prepared myself mentally and sent it.

[ Badass Tokens -100 ]

[ Strength +10 ]

The next sesh was further weakened to where it was the equivalent of a mild headache across the entirety of my body.

That wasn't too bad.

I thought in passing as sweat dripped from my frame onto the bench I was sitting on and the floor below it. Elated to have gotten through that agonizing experience without breaking down, I put the pain behind me and wandered over to the cracked mirror I used previously.

I know my body underwent a sizable bit of improvement, but my god, that's a major difference.

What I found reflected in the mirror was an extra-large bruiser with a much more proportioned body structure and a hell of a lot more muscle staring back at me.

I must've put on 70 pounds.

*Growl*

Pipe down, will you! I'll feed you in a few minutes.

Mighty impressed with the changes in my physique, I ignored the fairly intense hunger pangs coming from my stomach and scanned myself from top to bottom one last time, checking everything out. Once I had seen all there was to see, I stopped my examination of my new and improved self and brought up my system to see how far I had already come since I had found myself waking up on the savage and ruthless planet of Pandora.

Scanning through everything, I couldn't help but be affected by the incredible growth I've made in such a small frame of time.

Man, I've really come a long way in the short time I've been here. Looking back on this brief period, the progress I've made has been extraordinary, to say the least. I mean, I started out as nothing but a run-of-the-mill bruiser and quickly transformed that body I got transferred to into something that could compete with the likes of Sledge with just my physical strength alone. Having said that, I'm not going to act like I made it to this point on my effort alone because if it weren't for this busted system, there's simply no way I would've been able to achieve what I have so far, let alone half of it, or even a quarter.

Spending a few more moments with my thoughts, I eyed my significant progress one last time and exited the holographic system panel.

Alright, time to go get some shit done.

Driven and excited to accomplish a ton today, I moved away from the old cracked and damaged mirror with haste, hopped in the shower for a speedy rinse, fed the skag pups as well as myself, though I ate the rest of our available food because of the enormous evolution my body underwent. From my spot underground in the Miners' former quarters, I rapidly climbed the industrial styled stairs to handle the last task I wanted to accomplish before I set out into the badlands.

Thanks to my upgrades in agility and strength, I flew up the flight of steps one after the next, and as soon as I arrived back on the ground floor, I moseyed on over to the garage door and activated its control panel, causing it to slide out of the way in seconds.

It's still night, huh... Welp, I better get to it because I ain't gonna let a little darkness stop me from looting this abandoned Dahl facility for all it's worth and reaching the town of Fyrestone.

Although the darkness of night was still dominating the landscape, I didn't let it impede me and turned on the two lights built into my helmet along with the flashlight strapped to my incendiary Atlas machine gun. The instant my three light sources were lit, I walked off into the darkness whilst keeping a keen eye on the surroundings as I swiftly approached the nearest of the cleared structures.

...

My looting spree from building to building went on for several hours, but after I moved the last of the valuables to the tall mineshaft tower I was operating out of, I was finally done with this task.

Man, that was a lot of work, but it was certainly worth the effort.

Recalling all the wonderful finds I came across over the hours, I grinned and moved onto the truly final task, getting only the most valuable and useful loot loaded onto the massive dump truck. It wasn't that big of a job for me to handle thanks to my expanded carrying capacity, which was enhanced even more with all the SDUs I found over these last several hours, so I made quick work of it.

These activities of mine would've taken a hell of a lot longer, but thanks to my increased stats and carrying capacity, I was able to shrink that workload to a fraction of what it should've been.

Nearly ready to leave this godforsaken shithole that smelled of burnt human flesh and ash, I ventured down to the place I was using underground and gathered my litter of skag pups and transported them to the surface. Once there, I popped open a storage cabinet on the side of the vehicle's cabin and set the pups down inside.

"You guys sit tight. I'll see you soon." I told the five prepubescent skags, who were moving around in excitement because of the change in environment.

I doled out a handful of pets and scratches and closed the door on them, sealing them in. There were a couple of whimpers and scratching at the metal panel coming from within, but there wasn't anywhere near enough room in the operator's cabin for the whole lot of them, so they were going to have to enjoy the ride in there.

Unable to let them out, I didn't pay their cries any mind and hopped into the driver's seat, slotted the key in the ignition and gave it a twist. The big old monster of a machine fired up without issue and roared loudly, so while the beast was warming up, I brought out my ECHO communication device and pulled up the map to double check the route I wished to take.

It's about twenty miles to Fyrestone... This shouldn't take long.

Prepared as I'll ever be, I returned my ECHO communication device to its place and took off the parking brake. I then gave the vehicle some juice and began navigating my way through the destruction I had caused yesterday. Eager to get the fuck out of here, I sped through the destroyed bandit stronghold, which was filled to the brim with smoldering piles of debry. And right as the compound's front gate came into view, I lined myself up with it and put the pedal to the metal and smashed right through it as if it was nothing but a speed bump, and a minor one at that.

Fyrestone, here I come.

With the smashed gate lying crumpled up behind me on the dry arid ground, I hopped on the road leading away from this annihilated bandit fortress and ventured into the night that was just beginning to lighten up.
