Even Satoshi hadn't expected that Ash would do something so reckless.
Sure, Electabuzz was weaker than Manectric—but that didn't mean Ash had the strength to beat him.
On the contrary, the odds of Ash losing and possibly dying were extremely high!
And yet, he didn't hesitate at all.
"Riolu, go down with him—protect Ash!"
Satoshi was genuinely moved by Ash in that moment. There was no way he would sit back and let Ash be killed.
It wasn't because Ash was the protagonist of some story—it was because, in Satoshi's heart, Ash was now a true friend. A brother in battle.
Satoshi didn't have many friends. So if someone wanted to harm one of the few he held dear, they'd face his wrath.
Riolu nodded in understanding and immediately jumped down through the hole in the deck to follow Ash.
"Hahaha! Wonderful. The friendship between you two runs deep."
"To honor that friendship, I'll make sure to bury you together once I've finished you off."
Lt. Surge's words were laced with genuine admiration. He was clearly impressed by Ash's reckless bravery.
But admiration was one thing—war was another. He was still an enemy, and enemies must be crushed.
"I originally had Electabuzz rejoin me to avoid your tag-team tactics knocking it out. But now that it's out of the fight and your partner is gone, my goal is met."
As he finished speaking, Lt. Surge reached into his coat and pulled out a bracelet.
It had a small, polished stone embedded in it. He snapped it onto his wrist with confidence.
"Kid, there's no one left to save you. Savor these last moments."
He'd been slapped in the face a few times by fate tonight, but with Manectric by his side, his confidence returned. He had no doubts now.
Manectric stepped forward. It didn't attack—not yet. Instead, its body began to glow with blinding light.
It was about to Mega Evolve.
For the fifth time that night, the glow of evolution lit up the deck, and the crowd gasped yet again.
Mega Evolution was rare—even more so in regions outside of Kalos.
Many of the spectators had never seen it before. Some had only heard whispers of it. The moment Manectric completed its transformation, its fur resembled crackling lightning bolts. It radiated power and intent.
But Satoshi didn't flinch.
He reached into his own pocket and pulled out a glove he'd been saving.
Lt. Surge raised an eyebrow, his smirk faltering when he saw the Keystone embedded in the back of Satoshi's glove.
That familiar glint—he recognized it immediately.
"You thought you were the only one who could Mega Evolve?"
Satoshi's voice was calm, determined.
He wasn't going to waste time. Ash's life could be in danger, and even though he'd sent Riolu to protect him, that wasn't enough. He needed to end this—fast.
"Let's show them our bond. Charizard. Sceptile!"
Both Pokémon let out a thunderous roar, and light surrounded their bodies.
Again, the crowd was blinded by the radiance. More Mega Evolution. And by now, people weren't even shocked anymore. They were simply stunned into silence.

Type: Fire/Dragon
Ability: Tough Claws (Boosts the power of contact moves by 30%)
Name: Mega Sceptile
Type: Grass/Dragon
Ability: Lightning Rod (Draws in Electric-type moves to boost Special Attack)
Charizard's form shifted—the orange hue of his scales turned to jet black. His wings sharpened, claws gleamed, and blue fire leaked from his mouth and tail. The iconic transformation to Mega Charizard X had begun.
Sceptile's changes were less dramatic, but just as fierce. His body grew sleeker, a blade-like X crossing his chest, and his tail extended into a pointed spike.
Satoshi had chosen Charizard X over Y for one reason—eliminating the Flying type to avoid a double weakness to Electric.
"Well then, Lt. Surge—mind falling now?"
He said it without emotion, his tone cold. Confident.
And just like that, Surge exploded.
"You arrogant little brat! You think just because you Mega Evolved, you've already won!?"
Still stunned by the Mega Evolution of both Satoshi's Pokémon, Lt. Surge shouted, "Mega Manectric! Thunderbolt!"
Manectric didn't even move. The moment the command was issued, the crackling thundercloud above it roared, launching a massive Thunderbolt.
Satoshi didn't even blink. He didn't move a muscle.
He stood calmly in place, as if daring the Thunderbolt to hit him.
Lt. Surge's confidence quickly turned to unease. From what he'd seen in the battle so far, Satoshi didn't take reckless risks.
If he wasn't dodging, it meant he didn't need to.
And he was right.
The Thunderbolt veered off midair—redirected. The bolt arced toward Mega Sceptile's tail, which absorbed the full blast.
But instead of damage, Sceptile's body glowed, surging with energy.
Sceptile stood tall—completely unharmed.
The spectators gasped again.
Surge's face darkened as realization set in.
"That's… Lightning Rod! It nullified the Thunderbolt—and boosted his Special Attack…"
